The Oval Office is different than business or TV. There's a lot of pushback, and not of the giggling Billy Bush variety. The press is on Trump 24/7, people die when he screws up, and his policies end up as disasters thanks to his ADD and unwillingness to think beyond bumper stickers. We don't know how Trump's fragile psyche will respond to continuous rolling disasters and front pages like this one:

You weren't going to have a high approval rating for Trump. Period. Our nation has become more and more divided, at least since the GWB years, and this election process was just terrible. A number of Trump’s officials have written crude and inflammatory books in years past, such as Michael Flynn, who heads the NSC. And there’s the case of Steve Bannon, the former Breitbart executive who is Trump’s senior adviser. But nobody in the administration has drawn up a real-time ideological blueprint to explain what’s happening under Trump — except Michael Anton, whose radical theories are lifted from those of a German philosopher named Carl Schmitt, who helped lay the legal foundations of the Nazi Party. Trump has appointed Michael Anton to a job in the White House.
Anton wrote “The Flight 93 Election,” which caused a minor stir when it came out. Conservatives who didn’t like Trump were aghast at its strange endorsement of the candidate, while liberals thought it showed the crackpot essence of the case for Trump. Here’s how the article began:
“2016 is the Flight 93 election: charge the cockpit or you die. You may die anyway. You — or the leader of your party — may make it into the cockpit and not know how to fly or land the plane. There are no guarantees. Except one: if you don’t try, death is certain. To compound the metaphor: a Hillary Clinton presidency is Russian Roulette with a semi-auto. With Trump, at least you can spin the cylinder and take your chances.”
Another Michael Anton article, bearing the title “Toward a Sensible, Coherent Trumpism,” began by noting that “Trump himself – no man of ideas, to say the least – is unsuited to the task of thinking through what his popularity means or how to build on it. Others will have to do the real work.” In an effort to justify the “America First” slogan that Trump was beginning to use, the article argued that the anti-Semitic “America First Committee” of the early 1940s, which opposed U.S. entry into World War II and was supported by Charles Lindbergh, had been “unfairly maligned” and was just an “alleged stain” on U.S. history. Anton described diversity as “a source of weakness” and one of the “ridiculous lies” that have been foisted on America by its liberal overlords.
The value of Anton’s work is that it makes plain the bigotry of Trumpism before Trump and his supporters won the election and became a bit more careful about what they said. There’s nothing that Steve Bannon has written or said in recent years that comes close to the clarifying sweep of Anton’s essays, which are not just a product of racism but an argument for it.

What possible difference does it make that Stephen Miller lied for 30 minutes to George Stephanopoulos of ABCNews? Was George going to pause the show, rewind the tape, then ask the question again until Miller stops lying? I don’t think so!
That is why it makes no difference to Miller if it is lies or truth, since whatever he says will be broadcast, unedited, to Trump’s supporters. But Miller knows lies sell better than truth. Please consult Trump’s The Art of the Deal to confirm that truth, in particular, this story about Trump’s ghostwriter. The head of publishing at Random House said that Trump couldn’t write a postcard, let alone a whole page in a book:

I'm jumping the gun a little here, but I'd like to remind everyone that during his first month in office, Barack Obama:
1. Signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
2. Banned torture.
3. Signed a $787 billion stimulus bill.
4. Sent 17,000 additional troops to Afghanistan.
5. Ended the month with a net job approval rating of plus 27 percent. (That is approve of Obama percentage minus disapprove of Obama percentage.)
Donald Trump still has a few days to go, but so far he has:
1. Signed no legislation.
2. Mostly signed executive orders that are either routine (pay freezes, a halt to new regulation, reversing the Mexico City rule) or little more than PR messages to his base (cracking down on drug cartels, financial regulatory reviews, rebuilding the military, etc.).
3. Signed one executive order that was important, but rolled it out so incompetently that it caused massive chaos and was promptly overturned by the courts.
4. Sat idly by at dinner while aides discussed a North Korean missile launch and then failed to respond in any way at all.
5. Has presided over a White House so epically leak-prone and amateurish that people are already taking bets about which senior officials will get fired within the next few weeks.
6. Ended the month with a net job approval rating of about minus 8 percent.
This comparison extends to the new Republican Congress too. Obama's Congress was busy immediately with serious legislation. Trump's Congress is struggling to confirm cabinet nominees; is completely at sea about how to tackle Obamacare; and can't seem to agree on how to handle corporate taxes and tariffs. I assume that big tax cuts for the rich are still on the agenda, but it's not yet clear what else is.
Obviously Trump has done some genuine damage already, and both Trump and Congress have plenty of time left to wreak a tsunami of even more. But for a guy who was elected to shake things up, he sure hasn't done much real shaking yet. Just a lot of big talk.

Everybody knows that Donald Trump isn’t conventionally qualified to be president of the United States. But as a candidate, he appealed to people’s distaste for the conventional political system, and a segment of the public had Apprentice-induced faith in his management skills, figuring he would do what any business genius would do — surround himself with talent.
Many Americans take network television shows very seriously. But reality shows are, fundamentally, fake. Not everybody knows that, and, obviously, the marketing purpose of the “reality” genre is to present them as real. The premise of The Apprentice was, for years, that Trump was more than a rich, charismatic playboy with a flair for publicity. Instead he was a business expert, sufficiently knowledgeable about management to not only amass a fortune of his own but to sit in judgment of others’ performance.
The reality show that is the first month of Trump’s presidency suggests otherwise. Trump is a TV star, not a management savant. Trump said he would hire the best people. Instead we got the Trump administration.
The reality, of course, is that reality television is a subset of television, not of reality. The shows star “real people,” but they are still acting. Their narrative arcs are constructed by producers rather than screenwriters. But it’s still artifice. Hosting a successful reality television show is a legitimately difficult job that not anyone could do. But playing a management savant on The Apprentice didn’t require Trump to be a management savant any more than the cast of The Big Bang Theory can do theoretical physics.
“Did we think this clown, this buffoon with the funny hair, would ever become a world leader?” Bill Pruitt, a veteran reality producer who worked on the first two seasons of The Apprentice, wrote in Vanity Fair. “Not once. Ever. Would he and his bombastic nature dominate in prime-time TV? We hoped so.”

It’s now a commonplace that Trump and his underlings tell whoppers. Fact-checkers have never had it so good. But all politicians lie. Bill Clinton could barely go a day without some shading or parsing of the truth. Richard Nixon was famously tricky. But all the traditional political fibbers nonetheless paid some deference to the truth — even as they were dodging it. They acknowledged a shared reality and bowed to it. They acknowledged the need for a common set of facts in order for a liberal democracy to function at all. Trump’s lies are different. They are direct refutations of reality — and their propagation and repetition is about enforcing his power rather than wriggling out of a political conundrum. They are attacks on the very possibility of a reasoned discourse . . .
It is not so much this president’s agenda. That always changes from administration to administration. It is that when the linchpin of an entire country is deceptive and responds to any attempt to correct the record with rage and vengeance, everyone is always on edge.
I know we’re not supposed to bring this up — but it is staring us brutally in the face. I keep asking myself this simple question: If you came across someone in your everyday life who repeatedly said fantastically and demonstrably untrue things, what would you think of him?
There is no anchor any more. At the core of the administration of the most powerful country on earth, there is, instead, madness.

By the way, the entire point of this press conference seemed to be directed at one thing: accusing the press of being horrible and dishonest. This came up in nearly every Trump answer. This is a great strategy for shoring up his base, of course. As near as I can tell, conservatives all thought this dumpster fire of a press conference was a terrific performance.
