FEELING

The shortage of water for washing on Serenity had never irked her as much as it did today. A meagre sponge bath was simply not enough to wash away all that she was feeling. Idiotic, needy, weak.

She applied more soap and scrubbed furiously with the loofah, even though she wouldn't be able to rinse it all off. But even had she been in one of the most luxurious bathing houses on Sihnon, she wouldn't have been able to make herself feel properly clean.

Because today she had broken Guild Law. She'd set off in her shuttle to meet her client without the proper preparations. The syringe had remained in its box, unused. For the first time since becoming a Companion, she had decided to feel. Experience for herself the sensation of skin on skin, flesh in flesh and understand the strange craving that led otherwise sensible men and women to abandon reason and throw caution to the wind.

She couldn't get the image of Mal emerging from Nandi's room out of her head. The memory of him doing up his shirt buttons and pulling up his suspenders. Although he was embarassed at her seeing him there, he was far from unhappy. He was glowing with the warmth of satiation. And it stung like a slap in the face.

She didn't know who she was angrier with, Mal or Nandi. If she'd lived long enough it might have been with Nandi. For bedding the man Inara had slowly fallen so deeply in love with. And for feeling all that should have been hers. As a mere whore Nandi didn't have access to the numbing agent. It must have left her system years ago. No, she would have felt ... what? The sad truth was Inara didn't know.

Nandi had had it all. The feel of him, the taste of him. His smell, his warmth. Sensations Inara longed for but could n

This is a really good take on the purpose of the syringe, and a very well written story.

You've captured the characters well, and the dialogue is spot on.

Thank you :)

Loved this. A nice neat turn on the use of the syringe and I loved how Mal found out and how Inara ended up blurting out the truth. Very shiny, Ali D :~)

This is really great, and you may not be far off with the idea. According to Joss Whedon the syringe Inara was holding in "Serenity" had nothing to do with suicide even though a lot of people assumed that. Too bad he never got around to explaining it (in the commentary or the show).

Wow! That hits pretty close to home. Wonder if Joss would read this and think "Damn!"

LOVED it -- thank you so much.

"She watched his lips move as he spat the words out and inappropriately – given they seemed to be fighting - thought how beautiful they were. How the corners were simply perfect." This has got to be one of the loveliest bits of prose I've seen on the site so far. The whole tale was very nicely woven, by the way. Fine crafting of memory and honing of personality traits. The syringe purpose was masterful. Only drawback to the story: I NEEDED RELEASE! Mal and 'Nara gotta get it on after a lovely prelude like that. Got more?

Oh that was just wonderful! Mal's dialogue was particularly spot on, and I love the thought that the companions use a numbing drug..

Thanks and please, keep writing, there's not enough good Mal/Inara fics out there.

This is still one of my favorite pieces to read when I visit. Thanks for posting it and keep up the good work! I'm inspired by all of the characters and ideas in Firefly and it is really quite obvious that you are just as inspired. Excellent writing, characterization and dialogue. Thank you.

I like your idea about the syringe makes sense that she would use it if reavers took the ship
