From the mind of Jayne Cobb

She is the only woman he’s ever been afraid of.

From the first day they met…rather, the first day he’d tried to hold her and Mal up he’s had a fascination with her. Tall, lookin him right in the eyes and that wild hair, like a mane. She was like a statue. An ass kickin statue with a great set of legs. He didn’t think about bedding her, like he usually did when coming across a woman. He thought, now there’s a girl who could kick my ass, and I’d like it. Never could he understand the bond between her and Mal, nor what she saw in that loopy pilot, but he marveled at her just the same.

And it did something to him, seeing her like this.

Ever since her husband died cuz of ‘em gorram reavers, she aint been the same. Wonderin’ round the ship at all hours, spacing out at the table (even when he said somethin’ stupid), and worse, almost getting herself killed on their last job. Their last measly job. Like she had a death wish or somethin’. He just couldn’t understand.

She was worse than River, who was no help cuz she was actin’ like Wash was somewhere still ‘round the ship. Freaked him out.

Mal was at his wits end, which wasn’t that far of a journey, heh. He needed all the help he could get and Zoe wasn’t givin. And whenever Mal asked him for help, he felt as if he was overstepping some boundary; as if he was fulfilling the duties only Zoe could and should. Everyone else seemed to be forcing themselves to move on. Kaylee and Simon were at it like rabbits. Inara was hardly ever around, busy with her whorin’ or whatever. That crazy girl mostly took over the piloting, unsettlingly enough. Mal was scouring the ‘verse for work and worrying about his first mate, who was oblivious to all. And there was him. He missed Book. The man didn’t have sex, but he knew a bunch about other stuff. Spotted him when he lifted weights. One of the only members of the crew who didn’t make him fee

Now for a piece entirely done on Jayne, you didn't wimp him out or make him less of the selfish mercenary that he is. But did show that even the man-ape understood about peoples places and functions on the ship and what could he possibly do to make it better.
AWESOME! You've scored a 10 from me and I'm very critical about anything written about Jayne.

SQUEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!

I have a soft spot for Jayne/Zoe bonding. And that was just beautiful. I mean... honestly. He cares! And...he didn't know how to show it. And... just said the perfect right thing and... *sigh*

I love it.

I'm ready and willing to read more!

that was great! i think you really did an awesome job getting down jayne's voice :) - i loved the fact that his interest in zoe wasn't sexual even though he acknowledges pretty readily how hot she is. i just love this side of jayne in general... the almost little boy observations and concerns underneath all the gruffness and attitude. and nice mention of book - i always really liked their relationship. i'm looking forward to reading more of your stuff :)

"You look nice" simple but effective, just like the man himself. Keep writing, you did well.

Best first time I've seen! Errr...not that I'm voyeristic or anything. I ain't sick, ya know.
You captured Jayne's patterns beautifully! I really liked the 'girly girl' bit with Zoe and Inara. And to have Jayne just pop out with something so honest, without a second thought was beautifully done.

Yes, see, now that...was good. If more Jayne fics could capture his essence like this, I would read more Firefly fics and not go into convulsive twitching. Everyone wants to make him into this uber-nice, so-sweet guy and he's *just not that way*. I just HATE HATE HATE most of the other fics I've read, but you did a very excellent job on this one.

Straight talker, that's our Jayne. Not many see his as a great thinker though, and it's great that you showed some of the big man's inner workings. He's a tough character to crack, and you did a fantastic job.
Hope you continue writing.

Very nice! You hit Jayne on the figurative head.
