SHEPARD BOOK'S JOURNAL ENTRY #230

Wednesday, October 26, 2005

Depending on how well this goes, my intent for this particular set of fanfic is to have each of the characters talk from their own points of view through 9 different journal entries for each memeber of the crew...this one is Book's talking about how he feels about River right before Jubal Early made his appearence on board....

CATEGORY: FICTION    TIMES READ: 2470    RATING: 8.0 (G)    SERIES: FIREFLY

I am sitting here now pondering over the girl…her erratic behavior has greatly increased over the past few days and many on this ship are nervous and unknowing as to the outcome of whatever may transpire. Her brother Simon is to be commended for his selfless efforts. I know the boy must be emotionally and physically drained by now. And River…she is such a lovely girl…highly intuitive like no one else I’ve ever known. Her mind is a tapestry laden with thoughts and knowledge that most normal humans will never know of. And that very perception leads to me to ask, are the mind and body separate? Without the mind, there is no being, there is no life. The mind holds all creativity, all thought process, and all memories. It is the central center for motor skills and movement. When the body stops functioning, the mind can no longer be. Or can it? The body can be draped in the most precious of threads and never know happiness, just as the mind can be full of hope and eagerness but still have a body that is failing in health. I do not have the answers, only unanswered questions that beget more questions…I want to help her…but how? Perhaps, in time, upon pondering this some more, I will be led to a conclusion…but for now…I must sleep….

I like Book pondering the existence of the mind and whether or not it has any existence beyond the body. This his thoughts about River lead him in such a direction feels shiny. Ali D :~)

I think I like this book better than the book form "Objects in space" were he thought that he didn't care a something if River was innnocent or not... that got dark for me. I like this very much though. Great Idea!

I actually cheated on this one..badly...wrote a paper for a philosphy class about Dualists, Materialists, and the neverending question of mind and body...but the whole River Tam character, to me, and I'm sorry if I offend anyone, was all about mind and body...her body itself functioned normal, but her mind...her mind was so vast and filled with such nonconcrete items, thoughts, and ramblings that it affected the rest of her...and w/Book being so intuitive himself, I thought the philosphy paper and his character had a lot in common...thanks so much for the feedback!!! Keep em' comin'....Keep an eye out for River's Entry....
