“Not in the mood for whining, Jayne.” Mal was unable to shake Jayne as he strode through the ship.

“Ain’t whinin’, Mal. Just don’t see why I have to do it. There’s gotta be crates to move or guns to load or …somethin’. Somethin’ not that.”

“There's none of either, which you plainly know. We’re only going to the meet. This fella likes to deal with family businesses, so that’s our caper today – actin’ the picture of a big, happy family.” He stopped and whirled about-face, nearly being plowed down by Jayne in the process. “Everyone’s hands are full right now getting ready. Everyone’s but yours. Look, queer as it may be –and it may be mighty queer-- this is a job. If this is a job, that means everybody works...everybody who’s looking to get paid, at the very least. Now, you wanna get paid?” It was not really a question, since Mal never asked and Jayne never missed the chance to make money. “Go brush River’s hair and make sure she’s dressed right.” Mal turned on his heel and walked off.

“Go tsao duh hwoon dahn. Kuh-oo duh lao bao-jun-“

“And Jayne,” Mal called back without turning, “play nice.” He laughed at the growl that wafted down the corridor, followed smartly with the successive percussions of heavy boots.

Jayne tried to calm himself as he stalked to the passenger dorm. “Calming” was not a strong area for him. He knocked needlessly hard on the flimsy door to River's berth. “Shu mu?” came a bird-like voice.

“Um,” Jayne found his orders suddenly difficult to reiterate as he slid open the door, seeing River sitting in profile to him on the edge of her bed, hands folded perfectly in her lap. She was already in the knee-length calico dress Kaylee had found for her, though it hung billowously off her front in a strange way. He braced one forearm on the top of the frame

I thought it was well written, and thought you were spot on with the Captain. But I think that River and Jayne have such a known hate/fear relationship that I couldn't picture them being so intimate with each other.

Creepy and inappropriate sex stuff aside (I skipped over that part), good writing and good characterizations. Very good ending line. --Guildsister

In response to the first anonymous response: Xie xie. Yeah, I know, but fanfic has never been held to any standard of realism.

In response to the second: Xie xie. I don't think it's *that* inappropriate. I actually left out a lot that had occurred to me. Consider reading it in its entirety.

Oh, hey... Jayne's pants start to come off in the vicinity of River and I just have to skip ahead. Just the way it is ;-) *** The shower story you did I read straight through, though--quite good. --Guildsister

I don't really understand the comments made by the other reviewers here. I thought it was a very intriguing story, and thoroughly well written. How could they "read" the story but skip the sexual aspects of the story? That is the bulk of the story and what made it so intriguing: the sexual combined with the psychological aspects of the story. And as for as the whole inappropriateness of the story, the point of fanfiction or fiction of any kind for that matter is to suspend reality. If the pairing happens to be River/Jayne, which you clearly stated it was, then the age factor is just one more portion of reality you have to suspend, and just appreciate the story for what it is: well written, and psychologically probing. Thank you for posting this interesting piece.

THAT was a gorram great story! The characterizations were spot-on, the words each spoke were quite believable--coulda come from the keyboard of The Great Man himself. The Onanism was inspired and inspiring. Loved the depiction of the safest sex there ever could be. Nicely done, loved the pairing. More of the same, if you please, will certainly please! Don't let anybody take the sky from you.

Great characterization of the Captain! I could hear Nathan's voice in my head. Only quibble I got is that River seemed mighty coherent--not the norm (as far as the series goes). You may consider wierding her up a bit. Plus, point of interest: it'd give your writer-muscles a workout to figure out how River would communicate all that in her Queen-of-the-damned-meets-innocent-waif sort of a way.

>>Simon turned to Book, none comforted by the captain‘s obtuse simile. “But which one’s the lion?”

Why is the absolute best line always at the end of fics? heh.

Well done.

in what way was the story kinky? (some reviewer claimed they weren't a fan of kinkiness.)

Wow, some people have very vanilla innocent little minds. We wouldn't want to warp that.

Fact is, river IS older, and she's a genius, she's going to have desires. And maybe I'm demented, but I always saw Jayne and River as a possible match. I think she gets him and she's not afraid of him. He's kind of scared of her. It changes the normal power dynamic, especially considering how vulnerable she's considered to be, and that makes them interesting.
