Couldn’t they just attest that they boarded Serenity willingly?” “We could ask them, Simon, if we could talk to them,” Inara replied. “That’s the problem with the Immigration Detention Center. According to Melissa, Immigration throws up every possible barrier to communication. Even family members and the detainees’ lawyers have to apply for access, and it often takes days or weeks for the applications to be processed. And even then, many of the applications are denied. Well, about as much as I'd pay to see a series reboot anyway.
Nice once, finding out that the names on the indentures have been reported dead.
I'm a bit worried Inara's going to become exhausted if she’s taken on more demanding physical clients.

Inara would have gladly, easily, resisted the urge to wear glasses at a society function...
Nutluck: If things were to continue in that way with River and Ip, you can bet that Simon and Mal would have something to say about it. I don't think they could help themselves.
Bytemite: I, too, like the notion of trouble landing on Atherton Wing's doorstep. I already have a sketch of a scene where he gets discomfited--but that one's set far, far in the future of my story line, so it may be a while before we see it.
Platonist: Inara is working harder than she ought to be. She should be resting and recovering instead of working the system on Mal's behalf, but she wouldn't be happy if she didn't do what she could to help.
Ali D: I liked writing the scenes with Momsen. He's a walk-on character in Shindig, we just see him for a second, and he doesn't say a word. But I often like to take canon characters who are walk-ons or merely mentioned, and work out who they are and what their motivations are.
As for the plight of the slaves, unfortunately that is the more reality-based part of this story. I've based this vaguely on some discussions I've had with a friend of mine who is a human rights attorney, and has told me some things about slavery in *a real country*--current, not historical. Obviously, my fictional version does not reflect the facts on the ground in any particular real place and time, but I like to think that it is not an entirely unrealistic depiction of some of the issues involved in modern slavery, which most unfortunately is a real problem.
ZoesMom: Writing the scene between Inara and Momsen was a lot of fun. I like those internal eye-rolls that Inara is so good at concealing from her clients.
