Ooh. Interesting bit about the terraforming there, and of course the former Operative, whose arrival may not have been coincidence at all. Once again, even though you invented this world for your story here, you've shown your work.

Ha, River did a Rite of Passage through the Lion's Mouth... Nice touch.

Also really like how you're throwing curveballs in the relationship you're developing... With those two it's never going to be straightforward. One or the other is always going to be lost in their head, or holding something back. Which, hopefully, will lead to more of those fun tempestuous fights, as opposed to tragedy, though either one would be a good subject for story matter.

Interesting development and a very nice long chapter. Keep up the good work.

I like the notion that the Operative's interaction with Mal lead to a change of heart and direction. Just not sure it was a good thing him telling Neumann about Serenity and her Captain. Shiny, Ali D :~)

Just updated this posting with *fanfare* LINKS! to the other stories. BIG thanks to Mal4prez for answering my query. You're brilliant, M4P!

Bytemite: Thanks for noticing the details!
Operative? Coincidence? Ha!
Oh, yes, tempestuous M/I coming up. Wait and see.

Nutluck: Yes, this one's a little longer. I'm aiming for >3000 words for all of them these days, primarily based upon your feedback on my first story. This one's nearing 5000 words.

Ali D: "Not sure it was a good thing telling Neumann about Serenity and her Captain"...You've homed in on the heart of it.

Thats cool. I just have a much easier time getting into stories if the chapters are longer personally. That's why I always ask for long chapters. I get more invested the more I can read with out a break. Anyways look forward to the next parts.

Mal, Wash and Mal's insecurities; well done.

I like how Inara dressed for one occasion and all she did was hold him, or at least that’s what’s implied, I do wish she would be more open with her troubles.

I always thought Shadow was nuked, the chain reaction works just fine though.

Good idea bringing the Operative back.

Platonist--Thanks for your comments! Glad someone liked the Mal/Wash scene. It was the first one written, back when the rest of this story was just a sketch. I really, really wanted to have Wash and Book appear in my stories, but Joss made it difficult, since he killed them off!

Glad you appreciated the Mal/Inara scene. There are many facets to intimacy; sex is just one of them. I wanted to show how Mal and Inara's relationship is progressing. Inara will have to be more open, or things will stall.

My take on Shadow is that the bombing set off a chain reaction that destroyed the terraforming. The events that destroyed Shadow are explored more thoroughly in one of my upcoming stories. (teaser)

Operative: yes, he's baaaack!

re Mal and Inara, I think he wants to understand her as much as she him, but in order for that to happen, she's going to have to trust that he is emotionally ready to deal with her horrific truths as much as it may hurt him. She can’t keep misleading him; it’s not fair, although I think this is Inara's greatest flaw, an inability to be forthright about herself, Inara the person, not the Companion, she hides behind.

I loved the scene between Ip Neumann and The Operative!
