Characters/Pairings: Mal/Inara
Notes: Written as part of an A-Z Drabble meme, for the prompt B for Bouquet – Firefly, Mal/Inara
It had been a hard thing, deciding to come. Not to the wedding itself; she was delighted for River and her beau, so pleased that the girl – woman now – had found love and stability and a life as close to normal as she could.
It was knowing Mal would be here, of course.
That he’d given away the bride was no surprise, especially with Simon standing as Best Man, but the outright open affection between them, that had surprised her. Not that the affection itself was unexpected, they’d always shared a bond, the two of them, but for Malcolm Reynolds to show that much emotion, that much softness, in public…
She sat, after, idly twirling the bouquet of dried silk flowers that River had undoubtedly intentionally thrown to her, waiting. She knew he would come.
“Means a lot to her, you bein’ here,” he said as he sat beside her on the window ledge; beside but far enough away not to be considered next to her.
She could feel his eyes on the bouquet and wondered if he mourned for opportunities long past. She stilled her fingers. “Terry seems a fine fellow,” she said, lifting her gaze to find the newlyweds on the dance floor.
“Seems an awful lot like Simon, you ask me,” he groused, and it was plain in his tone that he wasn’t one hundred percent sure of the match. But it was just as obvious that River had him wound around her little finger and he would have denied her nothing her heart desired. It was a welcome glimpse of the man she preferred to remember and she smiled, forgetting for a moment.
“He reminds me of you,” she said, a touch of fondness in her voice and he looked at her, a wry smile finally curving his lips as he looked away, silently acknowledging that he’d thought as much himself.
“Think she’d have sense enough not to go marryin’
Feel free to speculate :oD
I mean, it's really pretty and one hell of a dark scene, and very much like you, hehe.
But it's sooo bleak. :(
The way Mal is so much harsher than Inara, I figure she was the one to walk away, eh?
Big squee for 2x2 fic!!
Shifting the hologram another angle, could this be the same old dance? Mal saying something, Inara misreading what emotion he's putting in it, feeling rejected and responding as best protects herself, Mal feeling rejected himself and responding as best dismisses her.
I do like your bitter Mal.
I think that, likely yes, she was the one to walk away that last time...
But Byte's got it too, in many ways this is the same old dance, and Inara's not letting herself dance it anymore... Mal put's the overture out there, but she doesn't take him up on it - despite, I think, wanting to. That's what's so sad to me, she *wants* to, but she's been down that road before, so many times, and this is where it gets them, every damn time, and she's not going to let herself do it again. So Mal gets all petulant and bitter, of course.
The more I've been thinking about the whole thing, it makes me wonder, did Mal ask Inara to marry him sometime in the past? Would put a *whole* lot more meaning into what Mal says, and Inara's refusal to comment, don't you think? :o)
As for the deleted scene, I think the imagery of that was definitely in my head. I had a very very clear picture of them sitting side by side like that, but Mal was on Inara's left in my head rather than her right as he was in the shuttle scene. :o)
Thanks everyone, glad you liked :o)
I thought there must have been a significant history between the two of them before this - perhaps even that they had been married at one time, or engaged. And oh, earlier, when Inara's wondering at Mal showing his affection for River, and keeping that memory of him so protectively - she got her heart broken. Badly.
Now you must! write something M/I with giggling and kisses.
Idon't know why it makes me so especially sad, but it does. I want them to have a moment of connection and forgiveness and hugses.
Can I maybe bribe you?
Actually, I'm not above bribery... ;oD
What sort of bribes do you think you will respond to?
Bribe wise... hmm Write the end of Choices for me? *GRIN* that's a good one, I like that! *nod nod* Somehow, however, I doubt you'll go for that :o)
A drabble in return?
Should I contribute to the bribe? Sweeten the pot?
(Wonders how long she can hold out for more good stuff before she actually has to write something *wink wink*)
*hides behind GR and Byte*
It was a dark and stormy night - in space! Space winds were shaking the ship! And the ghost of Wash roamed the cavernous metal halls of the Gothic Ship Serenity...
Nah, seriously. Give me a detailed prompt and I'll do my best. Mightput all that desky time I have here to good use. :)
Hmmm prompt prompt prompt....
How about... Inara, regret, and...sunsets?
Now, how does this go? something like "Go! Do!" ;oD
Are you trying to provoke me?
Moi? Hey, sunsets can be romantic! Maybe Mal asks if she has any regrets, and she says she doesn't have any!
It doesn't *have* to be interpreted as bleak, darlin'!
Besides which, you asked *ME* for non-bleak fic, not yourself ;o)
Okay, fine. I shall see what I can do with it. But you better write a nice resolution to this one. ;)
And, well, I've written *something* anyway. Hopefully it's nice enough for you :o)
Wow, you ARE good. Saffron getting double crossed good. Bravo.
I feel I have made a mistake of mixing-up-curtsy-and-bow porporations.
Thank you, thank you ;o)
And bravo, brava, whatever, I'm good with either. I'm not hemmed in by gender-y things :oD
