Ta ma de!
Wash grimaced in pain. Once their eyes had become accustomed to the gloom, it had become apparent that they were underground. The earthen room was irregularly shaped, with a beamed ceiling about 4 meters high. A sack of dusty potatoes in the corner bore lonely witness that this was indeed a root cellar. Judging by the room's size, the potatoes must, at one time, have had a great deal of company. Tufts of straw were scattered about at random, emitting a sharp, acrid smell that mixed with the musty air, itching their noses to the brink of sneezing. Rough, uneven wooden stairs led from the hard dirt floor to a pair of very solid, very solidly locked double storm doors.
From his vantage point, flat on his back, left side throbbing accusingly, Wash could see thin gaps in the mocking planks, through which a weak light was filtering in. So much for the hurling of his semi-muscular body at the door to break the lock asunder. "Sorry." His voice rose discouraged from the floor, followed by the rest of him. "We're humped."
Kaylee scooted up the stair to examine the results of Wash's manly efforts. "Not even loose. There ain't no way outta here, 'cept someone unlocks that door," she said with sad finality. She descended slowly, absentmindedly brushing dirt off her clothes. Wash put a consoling arm over her shoulder.
"Hey, now," he said softly. "At least it's not raining. I mean, then we'd be standing around in mud. And wet straw, which smells foul, I can tell you!" His voice took on a slightly manic edge. "Especially when it's from a horse stabl

Shiny. Love this slightly skewed version of the Wash/Zoe romance. And I managed to be the first to post comment. Ha!

Welcome, welcome! Very glad you are enjoying my 'Firefly through a lense darkly.' Having a great time writing it, and discovering this whole fanfiction world.

This IS interesting. I like your villain, just this side of twisted but also believeable. Makes you wonder what Zoe and Mal did, but probably more like he's just pissed he got injured somehow in the fighting than any real wrongdoing on Mal and Zoe's part. I looked at their war records (it's on the Serenity Blue Ray), and they haven't been charged with anything official. I guess that doesn't mean something didn't happen, but I just kind of find it unlikely.

Chapter 5 will give you something to chew on. Just a caveat - I'm riffing on the Mal and Zoe we see in those deleted scenes in my Prologue. I think one reason those scenes were cut was to make Mal and Zoe less hardened and harsh. If you watch the scenes (on youtube or the DVD) and THEN watch the scene in the pilot movie in the common area, where Simon has just told the crew his story and Mal tells him if Kaylee doesn't pull through he might get spaced, etc., it casts them as much darker characters. Add in the 'Macbeth' themes (which you will see more of in chapter 5) and it all makes for a pretty dark story, I will admit.

Hi! Welcome to the site and to the fanfic world! It does draw one in. Interesting yarn you have going here. I like seeing histories to the characters, things like Kaylee flirting with Wash.
Did you get my PM about formatting?

Hi. No, I didn't get any email, either from you or the site managers. But I figured it out, as you can see from the updated formatting. I appreciate your attempt to help, anyway.
If you think about it in terms of common intersts and general personality compatibility, Wash should want to be with Kaylee. But that's not going to happen in this fic, so the question is - will opposites attract?

Great, thank you sooo much! I've been wanting to do the chinese mouseover thing, but couldn't figure it out. Now I can maybe even add my Shakespeare citations as mouseovers, so they don't have to look all lonely and awkward up there in the intro notes. This is very exciting!

I completely believe that Kaylee would, if locked in a root cellar, pass the time by making out. It's not the worst idea :) And hurray for Wash with the clever escape!
I really like reading Wash's internal monologue as you have imagined it.
