What is it with spoon-fed fools who think SHOOTING Mal non-fatally will stop him? Callum had some misfortune, but honestly thinking he could beat Mal in what was sure to end up a no-bars hold brawl? In pure survival scrambling at it's most brutal? Against all historical records and odds? Perhaps he was crazy, but I'm more inclined to call that stupidity.

Mal's not necessarily wrong. Whatever nobility and reason Callum had, he lost it long ago in Serenity Valley, for exactly the reason that was said. That's the side of the story Wash is forgetting. Callum does indeed have good reasons, even sympathetic reasons. But one doesn't pity someone so consumed by revenge such that innocent casualties like Wash and Kaylee become acceptable.

I daresay Mal's being more charitable to the man than he deserves. Talk to me of Callum's soldiers that Mal killed. It IS different, it is, because it was war, and they weren't civilians, and Mal didn't threaten to have his men rape the women, torture the men. A monster is still a monster, even if it was the designated heroes who made him that way.

Perspective. But then, that's what I like about this story. It's all about perspective. Mal was wrong, as well, and Wash is right to be wary.

Bytemite - I decided to split this chapter into two because it was so long. Sorry about that.

I'm glad you are appreciating the ever-shifting perspective between Mal, Zoe and Wash.

As for the cliche of having an enemy shoot Mal and expect thereby to win the fight, well, there are only so many ways a narrative can go when we know the outcome is predetermined. Which is why the fight itself isn't very important. It's what happens afterwards that moves the story along.

Wash and I have discovered the secrets of timetravel together!

Or I had the wrong chapter opened. I fail internet navigation. ^_^'

Good stuff though.

Okay, duplicate chapter 12 has been eliminated and the rift in the space-time continuum has been closed. Sorry about the mix up...

Creepy! And I like having Wash unable to throw the knives into a human being, even Callum. It goes the other way too often in adventure fics, the non-killer becomes a killer (of the bad, bad guy) without any noticeable acknowledgement of the momentousness of taking a life.

Still trying to do the unexpected with the story.

Just a nod to my own cleverness (sorry, guys!) but you'll notice that even when he thinks about working his way up to throwing the knives, the furthest he can get is a cardboard cut out, not the actual person.
