Spoilers: None. This story is set pre-series, about six months after Kaylee joins the crew.

Pairings: Wash/Kaylee, Wash/Zoe

AUTHOR'S NOTES: The story was inspired (ironically) by a deleted scene from the series pilot episode 'Serenity,' plus a little Shakespeare. The deleted scene deals with the end of the Battle of Serenity Valley and is transcribed as the prologue to Dagger of the Mind. Time frame is two years after the Battle of Serenity Valley. About eight months after Wash joins the crew and six months after Kaylee joins the crew. For everything that follows, consider it AU, if you prefer. Scroll-over titles added for those who want to see Chinese translations and notes to Shakespeare references!

I notice that you were drawn to my Zoe chapter, and that it's your portrayal of Mal that I most enjoyed (I am a hopeless Mal/Inara shipper, after all). 'He also had that whole dark, brooding cloud of disgruntlement thing that women mistook for hidden depths,' - yep, that's about it! :)

Having said that, excellent Wash but particularly Zoe. Hard to get inside Zoe's head when her face gives so little away, but you've done a great job of portraying her mind and spirit.

Thank you. Writing Zoe is definitely a challenge.

And with your story, well, I own two dogs and am a pretty hopeless dog-lover, so when I saw the title, how could I not read it.

Very nice beginning - it all went from casual to ohhhhh crap so quickly, very true to firefly tone. And I am really enjoying your word choices! Good, solid characterizations too - I'm glad I have more to read :)
