Mal's Pistol - Wilco Resin Reproduction

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

I finally completed my Wilco version of Mal's Pistol, and Byte wanted to see a picture, so here it is. I carved the grips from apple wood, and while they're not perfect, I'm pretty pleased with the overall effect :o)

Ooh. Wow.

How'd you make the metal parts?

It's all just resin, painted to look like metal as best I could do.

I started with a metallic gold spray paint as the base, then mixed up a brown patina colour that I applied and then rubbed off the high points to let the areas that would be worn shine through, while leaving the crevasses all dark and patina'd. Then I sprayed it with a polyurethane to protect the paint.

Here's what it looked like before I painted it:

Okay, I think this just doesn't work in the comments. If you care, you'll have to copy and paste the link into a new window.

How did you shape the resin, by hand or by mill?

Nice work. I bought one of those as well, along with a Jayne special. I actually dry-brushed the shinier parts.

I give you a 10. It looks awesome.

Thanks. :o)

Yeah, I had considered doing it that way, but I wanted to see how it would turn out the other way - definitely more work in the long run I think, but I did like the result!

Do you have pictures?
