Author's Notes: A HUGE thanks goes out to gillianrose for all the hours of chatting and reading and commenting and coaxing the words out of me for this one. You rock, darlin'. Thanks also to Charlie BZ who also read and gave suggestions, and a few tips too! You were a great help! And lastly thanks go to my hubby, who wrote me a scene to try and help me past my block, which was unfortunately lost when my hard drive died. Love you, baby :o)

Mal huffed from where he sat on the kitchen table, flinching as Simon drew another suture through his skin.

"Hold still," the doctor commanded, frowning at him.

"Be easier to do if you weren't so gleeful 'bout stickin' me with that thing," Mal groused, shivering in the open air of the galley.

"And I wouldn't need to – again," Simon punctuated, "if you weren't so cursed stubborn. I told you not to climb down into your bunk yet!" he chastised, angry with Mal and himself both.

After leaving Inara in the infirmary, Simon had retreated to his bunk and had collapsed on his mattress, asleep within seconds of his head touching the pillow. He awoke several hours later, only realizing after he'd gone to check on Inara in her shuttle that Mal had missed his last meds. It wasn’t until he'd searched the rest of the ship that he decided to check the Captain's bunk and found the man running a fever with several stitches popped and bleeding through their bandages from his ill treatment of himself. It had taken Jayne's help just to get him back up out of his bunk.

"I didn't put you back together so you could undo all my work by being a jué jiàng de dāi zi," Simon continued in annoyance.

Last line: :(

But the Guild law branch... That has some potential. She might be able to dig into this and find out who set her up that way.

You already know I love this...and I have to say, over and above the Mal/Inara love/angst, you did an awesome job with Simon! How completely frustrated he must be with the two of them, how tired and worried...great Inara moments, trying to find the strength to deal with terrifying news. More, please!

Thanks to all your helpers for unblocking your writer's block. Loved to see more of this wonderful story. Glad they could put honesty between them instead of misplaced pride. Loved how Zoe put Mal in his place with her comments - bravado only goes so far or stays cute for only so long. And you've included a conspiracy theory! Looking forward to more!

Ooh, I'm loving the turn the story has taken. Is something going on in the Guild? I've always wanted to see the deeper workings of the Guild and I can't wait to see your interpretation.

I know I keep asking your this, but has the story strayed into AU country? It would be very cruel of you to have Mal and Inara together and then not.

And I read this while at work; apparently I can access FFF.net from here. Who knew.

If I couldn't read firefly fic at work, I'd make River look sane.

Ooh! I agree 2x2, load us up with guild culture, spiritualism, and ritual! I too love reading that sort of thing, the guild has potential to be such an exotic environment.

Thanks everyone :o) I really appreciate that you're still reading and commenting!

And yes, eventually there will be some Guild culture, and probalby some flashbacks of Inara's past. The new turn the story is taking is part of an idea that's been shaping in my head for the last couple of years, and I really hope I'll be able to write it! (It kinda makes Choices seem like a prologue, god help me) I may end Choices at an appropriate place and continue the tale in a series of one-shots, I haven't quite worked it out yet. Either way, I have a lot more story to tell!

Thank you all, again, for reading!

I can't remember if I have ever commented this story before (what can I say... I am a lazy lurker and I have had some login problems) but I want you to know that this is one of the best Firefly-stories I have ever read.

Keep it coming, it's gold :)
