"That's not a dog, that's a.... I'm not quite sure...."
Kaylee and Simon were outside of the cabin.
It was cold, the hovermule was parked off to the side and they wanted nothing more than to go in and share body heat. However, there was a very large, wolf-esque beast inside of the cabin, refusing them passage as it snarled and guarded the door.
Simon studied the massive beast from a dirty window. "Leave it to him to keep a monster for a pet."
The monster, was not a monster, but a common cattle guard dog. Unlike the dogs back at the ranch, used to herd the cattle on drives, it was used to fend off large predators. Thus, it was a huge canid, with thick, reddish brown fur tipped with black that formed a heavy mane around it's neck to protect the jugular from mountain cats, bears, wolves and anything else it met. The ears were alert and dished shaped to funnel in sound, and above all the dog possessed a set of very large teeth as it flung itself at the window, actually cracking it as the guard didn't want the man anywhere near its territory.
"Sounds right." Kaylee grimaced as he jumped back. The note was still attached to the door, and she ripped it off of the knife as they walked over to the small stable to regroup.
Simon, leaning against the stable door, took a deep breath to slow his racing heart. Catching her with the note, he frowned. "I can't believe he left something like that."
"It's Jayne though." Muttering under her breath, she read the note.

Kaylee mulled the letter over, they had assumed Heidi was Jayne's concubine of the week and his last comment was some cruel joke at Simon. Quirking her mouth to the
