Spoilers: Post-Series, Pre-Comic
Paring: Mal/Inara, Crew
Rating: PG
Author's Note: I know it's not a lot, but, I thought it would be better than nothing, considering how long it's been, to get this little bit put out. So, a little Christmas gift to myself and to those of you still holding out hope that I'll finish this (and I still swear I will, though, it's a little past it's prime now)
Special thanks as usual go to anjulie and homespun, who have put up with much whinging and self doubt and whininess on my part. Love ya, gals. This is for you.
Title: CHOICES – Part 14 B
Author: 2x2
*****
Sound.
Blip… Blip... Blip…
Hissssss.
Blip.
Whoosh.
Blip… Blip… Blip…
Hissssss.
Blip.
Whoosh.
Blip… Blip… Blip…
The sound was familiar, but he couldn't connect it to a meaning in his mind, his thoughts too cloudy and muddled. Slowly, lashes fluttering, he opened his eyes, squinting at the harsh, blue light that flooded his vision painfully until he blocked it out again.
Whoosh.
Blip… Blip… Blip…
Hissssss.
Blip.
Whoosh.
His throat was dry he gradually realized, and he tried to swallow, wishing for some spit, his tongue thick and scratchy as it scraped along the roof of his mouth. He forced his eyes open again, blinking as they watered in the brightness, making everything blurry and unfocused. Brow furrowing, he tried to sit up, breath expelling in a strained gasp as pain suddenly flared to life in his midsection accompanied by a wave of nausea that had him hovering on the edge of blackness again.
Blip …Hissssss…. Blip…
He lay motionless for several minutes, fighting the rise in his gorge until the feeling finally subsided, the pain like a low, banked fire in his gut. He shivered, body prickled in sweat and swallowed dryly again, growing frustrated as his addled brain continued to refuse to cooperate and make sense of things. And all the while…
Whoosh… Blip… Blip… Blip… Hisssss….
…that sound,
Anyhow, I'm very happy Mal's not dead. I was pretty sure you'd killed him off at one point. Thanks goodness you've posted more!
Keep flying ;)
This is such a wonderful story and I hope you're proud of your work so far - hope you find joy in the effort and skill of creating this. Looking forward to more!
And I really wasn't meaning to leave another cliff hanger, but the part that comes right after this just... would not write for me. So I figured I just had to get soemthing up for now, and then hopefully hammer out the rest on the holidays. Sorry...
Now, in Simon's defence... Zoe was the one who'd heard Inara say that Mal was dead, and so he wouldn't automatically know that she thought he was, and also, from his point of view, his patient was choking on the breathing tube and not responding to his attempts to calm her, so the best option was to sedate her asap before she disloged the tube, and then extubate while she was unconscious... And, it all happened very very fast and Simon has been up for hours and hours and is dead on his feet, and we all know what his bed side manner is like ;o) So, it was not the first thing to come into his mind... at least, that's how I see it ;o)
Anyway, thank-you so much, I'm so very glad you're still enjoying it, and you all make it that much sweeter to get another part out. Thank-you!
