Chapter 14

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Kaylee’s eyes were wide and pooling with happy tears. Staring from the sugary confection before them, adorned fittingly with a statue of a bride and groom and back to Evelyn, she finally breathed, “I don’t believe it.”

Smiling widely to the young woman, Evelyn pulled her into a quick embrace, placing a peck to her cheek. “Well, believe it, dear. I already knew the baker you were planning to use and he was able to send this over this afternoon.” Leaning towards her, she confided, “And it’s strawberry and vanilla, just like you wanted.”

Squealing, Kaylee clapped her hands together happily, before whirling on Simon, her arms encircling his neck. “Ain’t it shiny, sweetie? We get a cake an’ everythin’.”

Cradling her face in his hands, Simon could only return her shining grin, unable to be upset in the face of Kaylee’s overwhelming happiness. “It’s amazing, bao bei,” he whispered, placing a peck to her lips.

Hugging him tightly, Kaylee sighed and Simon recognized it for the contented sound it was.

“All right, who wants some champagne?” Eli returned to the room, followed by their butler, a tray of four champagne glasses in his hand. As the man passed them around, Eli raised his glass and addressed the young couple, who were again glued to one another.

“Evelyn and I have never met two people more in love or more deserving of happiness than the two of you,” Eli began, his voice growing heavy with sincerity. “Simon, I had no idea when I offered you a job that you would turn out to be such a ruttin’ good surgeon-“ A ripple of laughter circled the group and Simon glanced to his feet, a blush creeping up his neck at the compliment as Kaylee beamed brightly. “But I also had no idea of how important or special you would become to me and Evelyn.”

Excellent! I love the wonderful cutting back and forth between scenes, and particularly the quiet of Mal, Zoe and Jayne's predicament contrasting so well with the freneticism of River and Rafe.

Can't wait for the next part!

The contrast between River and Rafe's position and Mal, Zoe and Jayne's is very effective. I so want something very bad and very painful to happen to Badger - preferrably in slow motion. As for Inara, I hope she isn't going to do something incredibly stupid. Nice build of tension, Ali D :~)

Hmmm, something fishy going on with Inara's story...and I think I might have a clue as to what it is...

Brillianr chapter. River and Rafe's bit in particular was wonderful. IT might just be me, as a complete cynic, but Eli and Evelyn's speeches were just a little bit too much, too soppy. But only a tiny bit. Mostly it was just brilliant. xx

"My the best day of your past be the worst day of your future"... I need to write that down... *Looks for paper and pencil*

^^ Now i wanna go to a wedding so I can use that line.

This was a fun episode, I can't wait to see Badger in pain... or sold into slavery himself ;p

I wonder if any body will eventually write a fanfiction in which Badger is actually not evil... I always thought of him as decent, in a criminally kind of way. He only backed out of one deal we know of and him and Mal worked together afterways. Oh well...

Looking forward to the next chapter!

Alliance closing in, Inara all upset over the loss of something she never had, and some happiness for Simon and Kaylee. I'm sure THAT won't last! LOL!

Fudgeboy - that quote is actually an old Irish saying - I wish I could take credit, but alas, I cannot. I was just thrilled I found a place to use it.

Chazzer - sorry if Eli and Evelyn's speeches made your teeth hurt with their sweetness. As you can imagine, I'm trying to show a drastic contrast between them and the Tams senior.

Yep...it's definitely love when you're still capable and willing to charm the dickens out of your gal when you have a nasty concussion to deal with;D

Brilliant work here, TamSibling! I was all kinds of warm-and-fuzzified by the Silee wedding reception scene, and all kinds of worried by the Inara-confronts-Liliana scene. Like Chazzer, I too smell something funky in the state of Denmark...or in this case, smell something wonky on the planet Sihnon:(
