CHOICES – Part 14A

by 2x2

A lot of images had haunted Zoë in her time, most of them from the war, a few from after - walking in to see her husband and her captain bein' tortured among them.

She knew this would be another.

There was blood; pools of black-red stickiness soaked into the sand, contrasting starkly with the white of the stone steps and floor. Smeared hand prints and a bloody trail led from the steps to where Mal lay, Inara collapsed atop him. A third body sprawled on the floor beside them, but her eyes fixed on the captain and companion, the image burning into her brain, un-erasable.

It wasn't that it was any more gruesome than anything she'd seen before, but there was something about the stillness of it, the unnatural calmness of the way they were laying there together, so peaceful-like - if you ignored the bruises and the blood. Tiānna.

"Simon!" she yelled, a note of panic in her voice that had the young doctor taking the steps two at a time to reach her side as she rolled Inara onto her back, fingers pressing to the artery at her throat – the pulse high, fast, and thready – alive! – and Mal's… She felt a moment of pure grief well up inside her as she took him in, his body too still, face slack in that all-too-familiar way of death.

She buried the feeling ruthlessly; the skin beneath her fingers still had warmth to it a

Oh good god in heaven! Ack! Fix it! I don't want Mal and Inara to die ... do you hear me!??

Really great bit of tension ... thanks for updating!

I have been patiently waiting for this for a long while, and I must say, it was worth the wait! Get crackin' on the next part now!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I LOVE your writing and this story so much.

I have to say I was a little afraid you had given up on writing the rest of the story. So when I saw the post.....I almost did a dance. My kids would have thought I was crazy. Excellent stuff. Hope to see the next chapter soon.

*dances the happyhappy dance*

Thank you for this - I too was worried you'd not been able to finish this at all. Six-month blocks suck, but I'm glad yours has gone the way of the dinosaurs.

The part-chapter was, as with the rest of this fic, very good and very well-written. It would be horrendously picky of me to mention how coincidence-ridden it is that they managed to get Mal and Inara back to the ship in apparent time, so I'll just say how very glad I am that it happened. Please don't leave it another six months before part 14B!

Love this! So glad you posted another chapter. Things are still hanging in the air but I'm glad both Mal and Inara survived (barely).

Keep it coming!

What a wonderful treat to see more of your fic! Fabulous work with the tension and balance of action vs relief. Waiting eagerly for the rest - know it will be wonderful, also.

Dear Diary,

Today my heart leapt when I discovered that 2x2 had posted a new chapter of "Choices".

It was *awesome* and I hope *cough, cough* that 2x2 will post part 2 very soon so I won't suffer for too long.

Neat, but where did everyone find out that Wash is a universal donor?

Thank-you everyone for your comments. I really wasn't sure if anyone would remember this story, it's been so long, so I greatly appreciate the fact that you're still interested in reading it!

Emp0001 - there were times when I really wish I could have just said to heck with this story, but I refuse to let it beat me :oD So there WILL be an ending!

Eloisa - I was hoping the fic would feel more 'River-ridden' than coincidence-ridden :oD

Whelp - I didn't actually say that Wash was a universal donor ;o) though I have read that many times in fanfic also. We do know that he is compatible for Mal though, and as for Inara... well, I leave that till the next part of the Epilogue ;o)

Everyone, thank you again for being so patient and still coming back despite the long wait. I am working on the next part even now, and I swear it will not be six months before you get it.

You came back...and how! This was just all kinds of freakin' brilliant, 2x2!

:D

Was so getting ready to curse you out in every language I could think of when it seemed like Mal was a goner, but managed to pull the Cappy's bacon out of the fire...for now;)

Post soon and post brilliantly, my fellow Canuck. Your awesomeness is needed;)

Yay! You posted! You posted! Really good work, 2x2....right when I'd almost given up :) Can't wait (although I get a sneaking suspicion I'm gonna have to) for the next chapter.

Just finished reading what you have so far. Brilliant! I'm new to Firefly fanfiction and I'm glad your fics are among the first I've read. Again well done and looking forward to the rest of the epilogue.
