Malcolm Reynolds sat back from his plate with a satisfied groan, belly full and mind settled. The food had been good, fresh and well-prepared, the result of a well-paying job gone right. Serenity was flying, his crew were gathered round him, laughing and content and for gorram once not making a lick of trouble, and all was right in his 'verse.

Inara looked over at him then, a soft smile on her face. It was that soft smile that meant she wasn't pissed at him as of yet, and though it would take a lot to get her there, he better not push or she would. Sometimes that smile just egged him on, but tonight he liked the mellow contentment of his people too well to destroy it. He smiled back and she leaned in closer.

"Wash was telling me that we will be in dead space for two days."

Mal nodded. "True enough. Don't have a lot to worry about in dead space, long as nothing goes wrong with the ship." Little things like a catalyzer exploding, or a crazy-ass captain shooting him in the gut. No one had warned him when we went into the ship-flying business that Murphy had a special reserve collection of laws set aside just for captains of Firefly-class ships named Serenity.

"Then perhaps we should take advantage of the time, do something fun as a whole crew," Inara continued. She was batting those sparkly eyelashes at him as if their power alone was keeping Serenity going. They might, for all he knew.

"I don't know, folk don't want to get roped into any morale building exercises. Anyone on this ship needs their spirits lifted, I can find them work to do. It's an old proverb, you know. Work builds morale."

Inara did that trick where she looked up and gave the impression of rolling her eyes without being so crass as to actually do so. "Oh, come on, Mal. It doesn't have to be that way. I just meant that one should take an opportunity to have fun if it is presented to oneself."

Jayne leaned in from Mal's left and stuck his fork out, the waving tines practically taking off his nose, or an equally important eye. Mal

I love this story, so, so many great moments. Though I do believe Zoe arching the eyebrow of truth deserves a special mention...LOL

This was fabulous. The idea of them playing "Rings" as children -- what an imagination! Then all of the parts fit the FF characters so well. I love the innovation that each put into their part and into the story. Well done!

I liked River's, "Stay in character!" It was not even the first of many great moments. This was as relaxing and comfortable as it was for the characters. Thanks!

ROTFLMAO! Well, not literally, but I did have a silly grin on my face the whole read, and more than a few LOL moments.

Yup, "Zoe arched the eyebrow of truth" is priceless. There were several other great Zoe-isms too, and lots of really fun stuff from the rest.

Totally shiny and very funny. Darned clever notion you had. Thanks for a fun read.

Very good. I was reading it at work during lunch and people were starting to look at me funny when I kept laughing at an interval of 2 or 3 minutes

That had me giggling the whole time. And it put me in mind of that one episode of South Park.
"We're playing Lord of the Rings."
"We're playing Harry Potter."
"Fags."

And Jimmy trying to say "You shall not pass!"

My, God, you read my mind! I was watching the WB broadcast on Sunday and it occurred to me that the Serenity crew would match up perfectly with the LOTR characters. I love the idea that even a sub-literate goon like Jayne would know the stories. Our Big Damn Heroes are Big Damn Geeks!

Sparkling and shiny!! Reminds me of my playacting when I was a kid! Everyone needs some goofy time to remain sane. Thanks for the happy romp through a casual firefly day...

Keep flyin',

Wow!! That was so enjoyable, especially Jayne's realization at the end when he put two and two together and Mal was the one with him so knew exactly what he meant. Just Wow! Patti

This is great! River was wonderful. Coherant with just the right shocking knowledge of what was going on, very in character.

Jayne's revelation at the end was beautiful.

Funny as all get out!

Thank you for sharing this with us.

"Aww, look at the cute interspecies love."

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! and the "eyebrow of truth" and river's almost-flash and the "crazy-ass dwarf pilot" with jayne as boromir...priceless...there are actual tears of laughter running down my face

p.s. i never knew mal had such an urge to spank wash... *attempts to raise an eyebrow of truth and fails miserably as facial muscles are paralysed from laughing too much*

HAHAHAHA I just found this on a recommendation and I LOVE IT!! Couldn't quit laughing all the way through. Had a similar idea a while back (your character parallels are almost exactly the same as the ones I thought of), but I sure didn't conjure Wash using his dinosaurs as Nazgul - that was the BEST!!!

So any chance we'll see them play out TTT and ROTK? ;)

I just happened across this and I laughed so hard I had to confess to my children that, once again, I was rotting my mind by reading fanfic. Then they read it and laughed just as hard. Thanks.
