A/N: Well, I have returned from the "Flan-that-wasn't" and I have so many things/memories/recollections that I want to share. As soon as I can write about it coherently, I promise I will post something.

Here is the final chapter of my current series, Best Intentions. I'm not sure what I'm going to post next and honestly, with the holidays coming and my cross country move right around the corner (I'm going to California, baby!), I may have to just post a few one-offs and save the rest of my series for the new year.

I also am still debating whether or not to write a sequel to this series. I feel it ends in a good place, but there are a few loose ends I could play with ... bwhahaha!

Enjoy and please comment - I know you will - after meeting over 200 Browncoats this weekend I have come to realize that we are one of the best fandoms in the world. You guys are awesome!

And, of course, thanks to Leiasky for continuing to beta even when I know how busy she was - she's more than awesome - she's amazing!

Best Intentions, ch. 19

***

The following week was the longest week of Inara’s life. She had shut herself away from Kaylee and Simon, coming up with various excuses to keep them out. She knew the minute Kaylee had called that the younger woman knew of Mal’s predicament. She had let Kaylee tell her briefly what had happened and then abruptly ended the wave, feigning an excuse.

So now, she moved through her days by rote, her muscle memory the only thing that propelled her forward. She attended an opera one night and cried throughout it, glad that the story was sad and the theater dark. Even if her spies were watching her, there was a legitimate excuse for her tears.

She barely ate, not noticing as her stomach hollowed out from the lack of food. Her skin had stopped glowing and her features were more and more haggard with each passing day. But Inara kept moving forward, knowing that it was almost over, knowing that in just another day she’d be free of the Guild and free aga

I was wondering how you would tie all this up in one chapter, but you managed to do so very succinctly.

If you want to do a chapter on this, fine. But I think it'll work as a stand-alone series.

I, too, think it works good as a standalone. It was a perfect ending for everything that had come before. I think you wrapped everything up very well in one chapter.

Awesome, please say there will be a sequel. *Puppy dog eyes*

I'm glad everything worked out for Inara, I thought the Guild would put up a bigger fight, but everything worked out so I'm happy.

I loved the tiny R&R romance at the end, very cute. And Simon's sad little attempt at 'the talk' was hilarious.

I am appalled - that I can't write as well as this! I agree with comments above - this stands so good on its own.

I am glad that Inara finally came to her senses and walked out on the odious Guild but so sad that Kaylee and Simon are settling down and not on Serenity. While I am happy for them, I also feel they leave behind a gap that nothing else can ever fill. Mind you, with all the pairings on Serenity I think there will soon be the patter of tiny feet from several quarters and that can only be shiny! Well done and thanks, Ali D :~)

This works well as a stand alone, but who am I to tell you not to write more?:) I think it was necessary for Simon and Kaylee to leave the ship and I love that River thinks the mechanic is cute, YAYfor her! Such a lovely story!

Personally, I think this makes a great post-BDM standalone, but I wouldn't complain or think ill of you if you followed this up with another massive series;D

Gotta admit...you wrapped this up nicely, but I was kinda hoping for a bit more Guild vs. Inara conflict. I am mighty happy Inara finally made the call and walked away without caring about how the Guild was gonna release her (pensioned retirement vs. shunned canning)...but the chance to explore the strain on Inara of trying to get her cake and eat it too was let go. Oh well:)

Good story, though I am not sure about the ending, having Simon and Kaylee separate from the ship. Personal preference, I suppose. Regardless, it was well written as always, and I look forward to whatever you decide to write/post next.
