Title: Not All Bad

Mal sighed, running a hand through his hair in resignation. He’d put it off as long as he possibly could - a man couldn’t hide in his bunk forever.

Why this day always ended up fallin’ when they were in the Black, in the middle of nowhere, with a ship full of bored crew havin’ nothin’ better to do than poke their noses into matters that didn’t concern them was a mystery to him.

He’d made it crystal that he wanted no undue fuss made – wanted nothing done that would mark today as different from any other, he thought as he climbed the ladder out of his bunk. And he’d made his point well enough, Mal assured himself as he moved through the corridor and into the galley.

“Happy birthday, Cap’n!” Kaylee sang out, smiling broadly as she gestured to the cupcake they’d put at his place at the table.

‘Tamade!’ he cursed silently. ‘Didn’t nobody on this gorram boat ever listen to a word he said?'

Inara watched as Mal glanced from the tiny, crooked candle to the expectant, and somewhat nervous, faces around the table, then smiled to herself as he gave in and sat down grumpily, giving Zoë a significant look that promised retribution after the meal.

“We thought you’d want to keep the celebration quiet,” Inara remarked softly, drawing his glare from his first mate, “so we didn’t go for the usual cotillion and feast. We talked Kaylee out of making that three-layer chocolate and strawberry pound cake - the one with the dozen eggs?” She tilted her head and smiled teasingly. “So, it’s just the cupcake, the streamers, and the birthday hats,” Inara added innocently as he swung his disgruntled gaze to her. “And we kept the gifts to a minimum.” She placed a flat, nondescript package beside his plate with a q

Aw, Mal shouldn't have walked out in a huff! What is he, a woman? You need to write a follow-up to this now, I hope you realize that!

That was beautiful and touching and sweet. I loved the description of each of the crewmen's gifts. That's just great! And of course, Mal's scared, if Inara can't figure that out ... well, we know she's all bibbledy over a certain swai captain.

Loved it!

I love everything you write. Your Mal voice is so good. Not many people can do him and not sound too hick. Thanks for posting and more soon please!!!

This is clever and in character for all.

I love the way Inara drew upon the peom disclosure in the BDM, to establish more honest lines of communication.

Love letters and poems are most often written to express true feelings. Did the writers assume that their viewers were to illiterate not to expect this???

That was so funny at the end, it wouldn't be Mal and Inara if one of them wasn't always putting their foot in it albeit quite innocently this time. Loved the crew throwing the surprise party and poor Mal trying to cope with something that holds no joy for him. Inara was doing so well at the end, perhaps she will go after him and convince him that things are looking up? Ali D :~)

Totally knew Mal would get all indignant about being asked his age...dumbass is probably thinking Inara will run for the hills when she finds out he's almost a decade older than her (if one works with ages similar to Nathan and Morena's at the time the series was filmed plus enough time on top of that to cover the months between series and film (internal chronology);)

Still...this was definitely spot-on stuff, 2x2 (and anjulie)! Totally could see Mal being all grumpy about any fuss being made about his birthday, though still making the best of it by making Zoe and Jayne wear paper crowns and thank each crew member for their gifts;D

Sweet! Another 2X2 fic! Always a happy day when that happens! I know it's been said before, but you really do write great in-character dialogue. That's really important, to me, at least. Loved it!
