Day 6

Simon tried to push thoughts of her out of his mind. But every time he closed his eyes, he could feel her warm breath on his cheek, her soft lips flowering beneath his as they kissed. If his body ached from the beatings he had sustained, his heart ached with want of her.

He hoped she was safe, that Serenity had gone when he’d been captured. But he knew that hope was false. His sister, if no one else, would go to the ends of the ‘verse looking for him. They were too close, had been through too much together, for her to do otherwise.

Simon groaned as he thought about River, how angry he imagined she’d be if she was forced to abandon searching for him. And Kaylee, the sweet mechanic, innocent in some ways, not so innocent in others, forced to say goodbye to another.

He remembered finding her wedged into the corner of her bunk, of the engine room, staring at nothing, after Book and Wash had died. Their deaths had sapped a little of the energetic girl’s neverending cheerfulness and the thought of his death doing something similar made Simon’s heart ache to the very core.

“Still breathing over there?”

The question made Simon tremble with pain and chill. “Just thinking.”

“Don’t tell them about her.”

Simon tensed instantly, wondering what his cell-mate could be talking about. He hadn’t mentioned River or Kaylee, or anyone else – that he could remember. Had he been talking in his sleep? “What do you –“

“Yo

Good work here.

I'm going to guess the operative for the prisoner.

I think you're doing an excellent job with Kaylee aswell. I can definately empathize with her situation, I know that if it were my spouse/significant other I'd be going out of my mind.

Hope lit Kaylee’s eyes for the first time in days. “I’m goin’ with ‘em.”
Inara didn’t have the heart to tell the girl that Mal had expressly forbidden it.
~I'd really like to see any of them, even Jayne, try to stop her (well, with the way you usually write her that is)

I am going to stick by my assesment that the other prisoner is part of the interrogation.

I'm with you, RimG. The mystery guy is up to something sneaky!

I'm not sure that Mal will be holding Kaylee back though. The woman's on a mission!

Gotta admit Leiasky, I thought I had it, but don't believe I do now. So, I'll continue to rack my brain on it for a bit.

“Don’t tell them about her.” *confused my thinking about the who, so...I'll think harder.

My vote remains with the Operative.

Having read it all so far...this is very cool, the guessing on the identity of the other prisoner is really a great hook. And boy am I a sucker for the bait. Great work!

All right, I'm not normally a big fan of short (Leiasky, keep your comments to yourself) but I love how the shortness of each of these days is causing the tension to mount and build really nicely.

And Kaylee is right on character, she is stubborn and feisty and would be more than willing to fight to get Simon back - she worked too hard to get him in the first place!

LOL! YOU a fan of short. . . with all your long, epic fics, noooo, say it ain't so?!?!? LOL!

My best guess is The Operative, but I'm not sure.

"...her soft lips flowering beneath his as they kissed." Love this line best, but the whole fic shines. The operative, somebody says. Hmmm. Could be. On to the next.

Dunno about the Operative begin our mystery cellmate. I don't recall Simon ever meeting or hearing the Operative speak during the BDM (but that doesn't mean anything really;D). Maybe...another highly focused warrior with mental issues. One whom Simon would recall quite well if propmpted?

;)
