Serenity
Soldiers screaming, explosions echo
Malcolm moves, swift as sound.
Dodging the dead, he confronts his company,
Scarred silhouettes he must mitigate.
Sergeant voice sounds, confidence copious:
“We will win,” he assures them,
“We’re too pretty, for God to grant
Us death.” His words work,
They’ve found their faith. Sounds are skyward;
Sergeant Reynolds grins, “Our Angels have arrived.”
His head whirls, shouts at Zoë,
“Tell them to –” Her words hit him,
A punch to the paunch: “They’re turning tail.”
Seconds feel like minutes, Reynolds’ faith falls.
The Browncoats are beat, the Alliance arrives.
Freedom has flown, Serenity Valley is lost.
Weeks wage, No battles brought
But death destroys The war pulls on
Reynolds revives, Best as he can,
Soldiers security The hope of the men.
Hope is hallowed, Mortal to misplace
Reynolds pushes his people, thousands he commands
People perish, It can’t be controlled.
Sickness and starvation, wounds and dehydration.
Pushes pain aside, Forgets his fears.
His men only matter When his soul sears.
Keep them alive He’ll pass on pleased.
But he doesn’t die Rescue ships reach out
The wounded are welded Hope is handed back.
Reynolds looks on Fleeing the floating palace
Avoids the Alliance, Buys a boat
Adventures adhere, Souls on a ship.
Sergeant is spent, Captain climbs up
Takes position At the top.
He lost the war, But selected right sides
He presses on His freedom is found
The ship Serenity Is home now.
