The Ballad Of Rel
Saturday, 04 February 2006 00:57:52

Over on another board somewhere, members have been challenged to describe other members in a fun and entertaining fashion. So, courtesty of TheFarscapeLounge member Ian, I give you... The Ballad Of Rel. Rel, the man they call Rel He's been to Hyde Park And he's been to MK To see all his friends And to wish them good day Our love for him now Is hard to dispell The God of Trillian The man they call Rel Our Rel saw the dealers' wares shinin' He saw the dealers' big swords And he saw there Anduril hangin' So with the dealers he exchanged words So he said "how much for that one up there?" They said "Oooh, it's quite a bit" But Rel swallowed hard And pulled out his card At his home now that sword does sit Essential for playing frisball - He owns the TFL frisbee Frisball can be a strange game Maybe even frightnin' to see Our love for him now Is hard to dispell The God of Trillian The man they call Rel Now here is what separates true fans From common folk like you and I The man they call Rel He got on the bell To meet the stars of Firefly He's met up with Summer Glau He's met up with Jewel Staite The man they called Rel Would go right through hell For Serenity is his true fate He wore a black coat But his coat now is brown From Tormented Space He's moved to Jaynestown He often says "shiny" Though he used to say "frell" The God of Trillian The man they call Rel

Everybody dies alone

I feel so lonely, today. :( I check the board often; write the occasional post, too. But I feel so lost today. I try and be quasi-funny, crack a few chicken jokes, grab a few laughs here and there. But, underneath, I really just want to talk about River. But I fear people will soon grow tired of it. And I do, of course, not want to come off too overtly psychotic. Yeah, there's that. :) Seriously, though, I am not mentally disturbed. Although I guess that statement is as true as it is untrue. Addiction, I reckon, has much in common with music. There are these neural pathways being formed, that kinda 'train' your brain to expect certain patterns. And in the absence thereof, well, ... you probably feel the tug yourself. I miss River. How crazy is that? It's true, though. There's this sweetheart called River. "Little one" is the name Mal did give'er. She makes me cry. Don't ask for a why. I'm simply saying: I miss her. That's not much of a poem, either, is it? :( I feel so, so sad today. "tai nanguo" (= too sad) indeed.

Why Firefly Matters
Saturday, 04 February 2006 02:34:23

Firefly does for Science Fiction what Raiders of the Lost Ark did for archeology. Interest, and wonder, and hope... and all this while entertaining us. It brings different folks from all walks together for a common purpose. Firefly is intelligent, funny and, quite honestly, some of the most creative film work we've ever seen (in this 'verse or the next.) Every ship is an engineers dream and the humor is, well, my kind of funny. The characters are genuine and lovable and the stories are tight, full of surprise, and unlike any ever created before. The psychotic psychic is a stroke of genius and who knows where that River would eventually flow (given half the chance - or a second season.) The honorable criminal, while done before, has never been depicted as such a likable character in the persona of Mal Reynolds. And the other characters are more than interesting. In short, Firefly matters because it truly entertains.

saturday 2/4/6 New Stuff
Saturday, 04 February 2006 11:32:52

Had to get a new computer to go with the scanner. I was using an HP pavillion media center which totally gave up the ghost thursday.Just now got my settings back to where they were this morning. Noticed a lot of new artists hitting the blue sun room. And some, dare I say it, inspired by myownself. Feels wierd to be an influence. But anything firefly/serenity is good. The signal must continue.. Having a tough time keeping the comicstrip to a daily schedule. RL tends to interfere and these things take forever to do...Takes me about six hours to do a strip.. Oh, well. That's all for now..

Screensaver
Saturday, 04 February 2006 18:39:57

Actually I did not want to spend an entire day in front of the computer again, so I had planned to do no video editing today. I wanted to go to the local library (yeah, you know, those places where they have all those oldfashion things called books, with the many pages and stuff...) and check out some novels or the like. But the weather was awful and the deskchair suddenly seemed a very comfortable place after all. Since I did not want to go back to video editing right away, I decided to try out something new. I always wanted to do a screensaver, but had no idea how to do that. I found a shareware tool that works decently in the trial version with the only pay-off that it puts in a little commercial text in the screensaver. Apart from that it did everything I wanted (well almost) and I am quite happy with the result. If you live in a Windows world and want to give it a try, you can download it from my homepage (I put it under "FanVideos", since it is at least related).

The beginning.
Saturday, 04 February 2006 22:39:25

Yes, it all started with my dad. My obsession was begun, fueled and fed by him. Come December of 2005, I was shopping for Christmas gifts. I had not yet purchased one for him and knew that Serenity was coming out on DVD just before Christmas. I had never seen this movie, which is odd because I make a point to go see new sci-fi movies first-run. But knew that he had seen it and enjoyed it and so I had planned on picking it up at Walmart for their cheap first-week price of under $15. The Sunday before the DVD release, he calls me up. Dad: "You know, Serenity comes out on video on Tuesday. That'd be a nice gift for Christmas." DAMNIT! Me: "Does it really, Dad? Yeah, I think I noticed that. I'll mention it to the others. I think I got you something already." Blatant lie. He ALWAYS does either this or goes and buys himself what you were gonna get him. Later... Mom: "Oh, good. You got him Serenity. I picked him up Firefly." Me: "Firefly? What's that?" Mom: "You know, the series that Serenity was based on." You must realize how strange a conversation this second one is. I'm a regular fan of IMDB, a second generation Sci-fi fan (Mom is a Trekkie, I a Trekker and Star Wars Geek), and if I don't see something new, my husband tells me because he's as big a geek as me though he tries to hide it. Heck, I even own a few tapes of Blake's 7! I've seen Doctor Who uncounted times, and could admit to stealing Mom's fanzines. You know, the PAPER ones! Flashback to 2002. It was not a good year. I had a very severe personal loss that summer and I spent over a year abandoning most relationships, hobbies, and even let my career slide a bit. Come September, I was fighting to become gainfully employed once more and we were making plans to move in with the 'rents to purchase a house. Combined with deep depression, it did not bode well for watching any television. December things were finally picking back up a little and I began to feel like a real person again. But alas, Firefly was already gone. But how could I have missed it? All these years passed, and I had not even heard of Browncoats or of Firefly in passing. Not a whisper, although my dad claims he mentioned it to me. Perhaps it was because it was on Fox and had a Western feel to it. Perhaps it was because I assumed it was of the vampire persuasion because of Joss' Buffy and Angel (not a fan, sorry :( ). Who knows. Flash forward to post-Christmas 2005. Me: "Dad, mind if I borrow your Serenity and Firefly?" Dad: "Sure, go ahead." And that was all it took. I shall soon be shopping for my own Browncoat to wear.
