Gah! This thing is taking over my life. Seriously. So, I've had a bit of a writer's block when it came to this series (I know what happens once Serenity gets there, but it's actually getting to that point) which is why all these other little one spot fic pieces have been showing up. And today, I start writing, a nice little scene, too. When, lo and behold, what happens other than Joe, Kaylee's sweet and very happily MARRIED brother, decides to HIT ON JAYNE. WTF?!?!? Seriously, boys, stop it. It's not a slash fic. Play nice. (help me?)

Serenity - What’s in a Name?
Tuesday, 21 February 2006 02:56:50

Serenity - What’s in a Name? By WHR,III When Captain Malcolm Reynolds named his Firefly Class ship “Serenity” he strayed from over 800 years of naval tradition. This departure from the conventional practice of naming vessels gives us an essential glimpse into the personality of Mal and gives us a better understanding of his true nature. The process of naming a vessel is never taken lightly. In Mal’s case it may have been the most important event of his post-war life. As we shall see there are numerous reasons why the naming of his spacecraft was an important event to Mal Reynolds. Let’s consider the age-old tradition of naming Naval vessels: The Royal Navy of Great Britain had sustained a venerable tradition of naming seagoing ships. The policies and practices involved in ship naming were the products of hundreds of years of custom and tradition rather than of legislation or law. Warships always bore conventional, and often motivational, names such as Centurion, Dreadnaught, Conqueror, etc. The British usually tried to give ships of each class similar names like the classic grouping, “Invincible”, “Inflexible”, “Indomitable”, and “Indefatigable.” Starting at the beginning of the 20th Century, U.S. Naval ships were named in accordance with a system tailored to ship types. Names of states, for example, were borne by battleships. Cruisers were named for cities while destroyers came to be named for American naval leaders and heroes. This tradition, no doubt, was still intact during the great Diaspora from Earth-that-was. This brings us to Captain Reynolds’s choice of name for his 03 Firefly-class light freighter spaceship. Had he remained a traditionalist Serenity might have been named “Persistence” or “Endurance” from the last-stand attitude of the 57th Overlanders. Instead he decided on “Serenity”. At first, it seemed odd to me that the name of the most terrible and costly battle of the war between the Alliance and the Independents should be named after a word that means peace. Obviously, it was not. I imagine that Serenity Valley was just that before the war brought conflict and strife into the area. And this explains a lot about Mal Reynolds, the soldier. By naming his ship Serenity he proved that he would never forget what had happened at this battle, or for that matter, what he, and Zoë, had endured in the war itself. He would be reminded daily of both. Serenity then was named not in the tradition of battles and wars, but in the ritual of something quite different. Civilian ships are almost always named in a different manner than ships of war. They carry names of leisure, of wit, of luxury, of life and living. This gives us the most compelling reason for Mal naming his ship “Serenity.” The word serenity means the disposition free from stress or emotion or the absence of mental stress or anxiety. And this is exactly why Mal named her after this most particular state of being. She was, after all, going to be his home! This then, is the genuine reason Mal named his ship “Serenity”. This is the place where he is most comfortable, most himself, most at ease, most serene. Serenity is…… home and family! Kenosha, Wisconsin 20 Feb. 2006

Joss....just, well yeah...
Tuesday, 21 February 2006 04:59:23

It just amazes me every time I watch any Joss stuff how beautifully simple and poinant it is. I was just rewatching season 2 of Angel for the fifth time and this hit me in the right spot. Lorne: Now, I can hold a note for a long time; actually I can hold a note forever, but eventually that's just noise. It's the change we're listening for. The note coming after and the one after that. That's what makes it music. So simple and heavy duty all at the same time. Not to mention Beautifully delivered by Andy.

Howdy Y'All
Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:01:23

I've been lurking for a couple of weeks, but thought I'd finally make myself know. I've been a Firefly fan since the beginning. I missed several episodes because of real life things, but was hooked by what I did see. Personally I was a bit appalled by Fox's handling of it, out of order episodes, schedule changes. It was almost like they wanted it to fail, but I'm sure that's just paranoia. At the moment all I get is Fox so I'm hoping they don't cancel my the shows they've still got that I like, House, Bones, and Prison Break among them. I was sad to see Kitchen Confidential go. Guess that's it for now.

I'm considering offering a prize--maybe a free On the Drift tee-shirt once their done--for the person who creates the best fanvid to a song from On the Drift. I wonder if anyone would be interested.

the cure for writers block
Tuesday, 21 February 2006 19:53:24

I had a three day weekend that I thought would be a time of much progress on the Fish Job sequel, but nada! What with the olympics and visiting friends and home demolition (weee!) and many other distractions (smallville marathon for *****sake, where are my priorities!?!) I got precisely nowhere. But now that I'm back at work and supposed to have things to do, the fiction wheels are turning. Work avoidance, the best way to get anything done!! So has anyone ever been fired for reasons of fanfic addiction? Send good thoughts toward my boss for me, just in case...

Writing vs. talking
Tuesday, 21 February 2006 21:11:13

Sometimes I forget that emotions don't come across very well in writing. There's been a few times on here where people have actually thought I was upset when I was merely commenting on something or joking around. I guess I'm so used to talking to people online that have known me for a long time. Now, it's nice to know that these people are nice and caring enough to try to cheer me up, but I really think that I need to work on getting my point across. It's a tad bit less messy that way. Maybe a better use of emoticons are in order. I think that it's more of a problem with me being socially inept than anything else though. I truly don't know how to relate to other people, especially face to face. Online I can let out the real me, mostly because I know that if there's anyone out there judging me, that they'll never actually be able to figure out who I am. That and that I feel comfortable with my pals here...kinda nice to actually belong.
