Okay, so why is gmail such a big thing? Why are people going 'me me me' over them?

Seriously, all I know so far is 'gmail is Google email'. What's the difference between that and Hotmail (aside from Hotmail being owned by the Devil and all his little wizards)?

What's so great about Gmail?

You get 1 gig of memory and can attach files up to 10mb.

And it's all free.

I think Yahoo Mail now offers 100MB of memory in response to Gmail.

The thing about Gmail is that it filters through the content of you email to determine what ads you'll see. So if you get an email from a friend about movies, you'll see ads on the side concerning movie websites.

Google uses its search algorithms to scan messages and place relevant google ads on the page based on the words in the message. It's exactly the same as the Google ads you see on this site. It's really no big deal. As far as I can tell it's just as private as any web-based mail.

But that's just how they pay for the service (so you don't have to). The real advantages are, as have been mentioned, 1gig storage, huge attachments allowed, sophisticated searching, sorting, and storing of messages, and something I've noticed already, it loads really fast. I like it.
