Disney’s ABC has OFFICIALLY removed Jimmy Kimmel from the air nationwide, effective immediately and indefinitely, after his lies regarding Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

I forgot that Jimmy always cries. How did I not put that in my prediction?

Basically, his monologue was verbatim my cynical, original prediction.

Trump not mentioned by name once in the monologue, though there were two jokes and one real dig at Trump in the 10+ minute monologue. The jokes were tame. I actually liked the one about Tylenol.

The dig on Trump late in the monologue was based entirely over Jimmy's faux-outrage about censorship when he had no problems at all aiding and abetting censorship from the other side 4 years ago.

No single mention of MAGA in the monologue either, just as predicted.


Time stamps of interest:

2:44 - Jimmy makes a Trump joke by referencing who had a weirder 48, himself or the CEO of Tylenol, but does not say any name or even explain that joke for the people not in the know.

"Me, me, me, me, me"...

4:25 - "I also want to thank all of you."

Somewhere in between these two time stamps is the best part of what he had to say, even though he was guilty of encouraging all the cancel culture when it was going the other way a few years ago, along with his long list of famous people who signed a list but who behaved exactly the same as he did when they had the power and they could silence everyone that didn't agree with their point of view.

It would be nice if Jimmy meant a word of it, or took responsibility for doing the exact same thing himself over the last 8 years and admitting that truth to everyone and saying it was wrong when he was doing it too. Maybe some day he will.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out one day that at least 60% to 70% of this monologue was written by some top-tier, old school Democrats, just as predicted.

6:40 - Lies and choking back the fake crocodile tears and some more lies. Just play the clip of what he said on his previous monologue side by side with this part. This is the only mention at all about Charlie Kirk, although he does not mention Charlie or his wife once by name either. No time for that when this is all about Me, Me, Me.

8:07 - "I don't want to make this about me.", when he's been speaking for 7 minutes about himself."

9:13 - "Should the government be allowed to regulate which podcasts the cellphone companies and wifi providers are allowed to let you download? To make sure they serve the public interest? You think that sounds crazy?"

I don't know, Jimmy. Why don't you tell me what your opinion about this bullshit you said back in 2021 when everybody on your side was censoring everyone who didn't happily push the narrative you were being paid millions of dollars to push is today, and then I'll answer your question.

10:16 - Second Trump Joke. Joke about embarrassing cars ending with "Since this one" and shows a picture of a Tesla with Trump's name, but Jimmy still doesn't say Trump by name.

11:00 - "This former crusader for free speech, referencing Trump and beginning a segment with 2 videos of Trump for the next 48 seconds, while referencing him at least 2 or 3 more times as "this guy" or "that guy".

And he gives a smug "gotcha" face after showing hypocrisy in sound bytes, while not realizing or not caring that there are literally a thousands clips collected showing Jimmy and and all his friends and other late night hosts, news anchors from both sides, social media influencers on both sides and politicians on both sides all guilty of the exact same behavior. Some things I'm wondering about, which I have not looked deeply into.

What might be the calculated, expected ratings for Kibbels? I don't know what the actual headcount was in the most recent ratings or survey.
What is the expected reduction in headcount, just from Sinclair and NextStar practicing common sense?
What would be the resulting best case headcount upon the return of Kibbels? What about after the bump, like in a week or 2?
Just curious what any predictions might be. I wonder what kind of figures could possibly make Kibbels show turn a profit.


Since Sinclair and NextStar grew a pair regarding their ABC affiliates, I wonder if they might flex the same on their CBS affiliates with Colbert. What would hold them back? I used to suffer through part of that show while waiting for the Peterson/Ferguson show to start.


Vince Dao had pointed out early that NextStar was going to replace Kibbels disinformation with actual information in the form of News programming.
What is the chance that some affiliate within Sinclair or Nextstar starts producing an actual Late night entertainment show? When FOX started a News show, it swamped the Big 3 versions of Fake News. FOX learned that viewers would actually PAY extra for quality News from FOX rather than suffer Fake News from free broadcast Big 3 or free CNN.

I'm almost certain he's going to let me down completely in record time, but he's in control of a very powerful moment right now. Or the people pulling the strings are and it's all just WWE in real life.

He's got to be able to swallow his pride though and do some self-reflecting and admit to The People that he's been guilty of everything that he just claimed Trump was doing himself for many years now, as have been his peers, his subordinates and his superiors. Jimmy Kimmel Returns: ABC Ends Suspension Starting Tuesday

It’s irrefutable now: Trump is nakedly following the playbook of autocrats like Vladimir Putin and Viktor Orban. As his poll numbers fall, he is rushing to lock in permanent power by punishing his opponents and intimidating everyone else into submission. Craven congressional Republicans and a complicit Supreme Court have abetted Trump’s destruction of our democratic safeguards and norms.

Yet Trump has a significant problem that neither Putin nor Orban faced. When Putin and Orban were consolidating their autocratics, they were genuinely popular. They were perceived by the public as effective and competent leaders. Just nine months into his presidency, Trump, by contrast, is deeply unpopular. He is increasingly seen as chaotic and inept. As David Frum says, this means that he is in a race against time. Can he consolidate power before he loses his aura of inevitability? Will those who run major institutions – particularly corporate CEOs – understand that we are at a crucial juncture, and that by accommodating Trump they have more to lose than by standing up to him?

To put it bluntly, is the Jimmy Kimmel affair the harbinger of a failed Trumpian putsch?

Before I address that question, I want to offer some historical comparisons that illustrate how poorly Trump is doing compared with his role models, Putin and Orban. I wrote about this a couple of weeks ago, but I think the point deserves further elaboration.

First, Russia. Putin appears to have been extremely popular in the early 2000s, as he was consolidating power. His net approval — approval minus disapproval — was consistently above 50 percent.

Why was Putin so popular? Kitchen table issues. The Russian economy performed very badly for years after the fall of Communism, culminating in a devastating financial crisis in 1998. But Putin got to preside over a rapid economic recovery: Real GDP per capita doubled between 1998 and 2008:

Viktor Orban has never been as popular as Putin at his peak. Nonetheless, for most of the 2010s, as he consolidated power, his net approval was strongly positive, often by 10 points or more. Again, the main explanation was probably his perceived economic success. Orban took power at a time when Hungary’s economy was deeply depressed by austerity policies, and was able to preside over a large decline in unemployment:

Trump’s net approval, by contrast, turned negative within weeks after taking office and has just continued to fall:

As G. Elliott Morris points out, his position looks even worse when you consider intensity. Almost half the public disapproves “strongly,” twice the share with strong approval.

Some of the public’s disdain for Trump reflects alarm over his assault on democracy, the spectacle of abductions by masked secret police, his attacks on education and public health, his destruction of key agencies like the FBI, and more. Yet, as always, economics plays a key role in Trump’s cratering popularity.

People have not forgotten that Trump made big promises during the campaign: He would end inflation on day one, reduce the price of groceries, and cut electricity prices in half. None of that is remotely happening. Moreover, more economic pain is coming as the full inflationary impact of tariffs and deportations will soon be felt. Not surprisingly, consumer sentiment has plunged. It’s almost as low as it was in the summer of 2022, when Covid-induced supply-chain inflation was at its peak:

Charlie Kirk has been turned into the first martyr of the MAGA faith. And this matters because it is martyr veneration that helped both Christianity and Islam transform from small local movements centered on charismatic preachers into global religions. In launching its own martyrs, MAGA may be moving from a movement focused on one beguiling leader in the person of Donald Trump to a broader faith that could outlast him.

Since the assassination, a variety of MAGA-foe pundits have compared the MAGA response to Kirk’s murder — including Stephen Miller’s convenient claim that Kirk’s last message to him was a call to “dismantle the radical Left” — to the response to the killing of Horst Wessel, a German Nazi murdered by two members of Communist Party of Germany in 1930. In the hands of Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, Wessel’s death became a rallying cry, and Wessel himself a heroic martyr whose death symbolized the Nazi struggle against Communism. Goebbels had Wessel mythologized through songs, rallies, and public ceremonies, creating a cult around him that galvanized support for the Nazi movement.

The comparisons to Horst Wessel are not without merit. His death was a major boon for Nazi propaganda, just as Kirk’s death has given MAGA and the Trump administration proximate cause to escalate attacks on their political adversaries. But those comparisons miss something crucial. Goebbels himself was consciously drawing on an earlier model, and it is that model, the Late Antique cult of the martyrs, that the MAGA faithful are now, consciously or not, also invoking.

Until now, the evangelical Christianity that Kirk embraced — and still the default mode of worship for American Christian nationalists — has had only a tenuous relationship with martyrdom. There have been powerful stories, to be sure: Cassie Bernall, the teenager at Columbine who supposedly declared her faith before being shot, or John Allen Chau, the young missionary killed on North Sentinel Island. But these episodes are remembered as isolated moments of witness-inspiring stories of faith, rather than built into an ongoing culture of veneration as evidenced by the official support for the efforts to celebrate Kirk’s memory, including from the president of the United States. Evangelicals have often been suspicious of martyr-saints in part because this brand of martyr veneration smacks of “works” and Catholic hagiography rather than the Evangelical emphasis on personal salvation.

That reluctance has been a weakness, because martyrs inspire the faithful, galvanize movements, and spread a message far more effectively than any sermon. After all, what better evidence of truth than that there were hundreds, nay thousands, prepared to die in witness to that truth?

As MAGA’s first martyr, the myth being crafted around Kirk both mirrors that of earlier religions’ martyrs while still bearing the unique marks of the MAGA faith.

Revenge against “the left” is on the near-term agenda, but even the group’s leaders are concerned about what comes after that.

When Turning Point USA’s college tour resumed on Monday night at the University of Minnesota, in its first event since its founder’s assassination, there was a big unspoken question: What would this movement be without Charlie Kirk?

The organization has a lineup of speaker events for what was Charlie Kirk’s “Comeback Tour”—now styled “The Turning Point Tour”—that includes sitting governors, U.S. senators, and famous media personalities. It promised to carry on Kirk’s legacy. But it remained to be seen if the substitutes, all prominent figures with their own personal ambitions, political incentives, and ideological subcultures, would appeal in the same way as Kirk, a man with more basic right-wing sensibilities who wanted to speak across different conservative factions.

Monday night’s event revealed much about what’s to come: The event’s main speaker promised a unified attack on the “left,” from both the group and the broader conservative movement. That means a muscular, militant Christian nationalism—the likes of which we’ve already seen since Kirk’s murder—with major conservative voices and government officials invoking scripture to call for retribution. But in the longer term, it’s not clear that unity will hold: The sudden vacuum at the top of the largest conservative youth movement has set the entire right up for a power struggle, with different factions trying to claim Kirk’s mantle for their own.

The first event, in Minneapolis, for example, started with a very particular character in Michael Knowles, a conservative radio and podcast host associated with the Daily Wire. Knowles, who exudes a kind of smug Ivy League energy, seemed a particularly odd person to inaugurate the post-Kirk era of Turning Point’s campus activities. He is a traditionalist Roman Catholic who crusades for the traditional Latin Mass and enjoys discussing medieval philosopher-theologians and ancient texts. He owns a cigar company and wears suits. His demeanor, in other words, was that of a slick cosmopolitan, far from Kirk’s enthusiasm. But the conservative college students, fired up by Kirk’s martyrdom, seemed enthusiastic to see him: The venue was sold out, according to Knowles, and some students reported lining up for it starting that morning.

It took a while for Knowles to address the future of the post-Kirk movement. Perhaps because Kirk had already been eulogized in the massive political rally the previous evening, Knowles spent little time in his speech dwelling on Kirk’s legacy, other than to mourn the loss of a man who “we knew … would be president one day.” Instead, Knowles urged the young people there to honor Kirk by attending church and living out their Christian faith. But when Knowles began speaking of his particular theological understanding of how conservatives are called to bring their Christianity into the public sphere, his speech turned darker.

“Christian forgiveness does not demand we allow the cruel to ravage the whole earth; it demands we love our enemies,” he said. “In politics, love usually means punishing the guilty, both for the protection of the innocent as well as for the good of the criminals.”

It was a statement that would set the tone for the rest of his speech. In this moment, which many politicians and activists have described as a turning point for the conservative movement, Knowles wants the right to act decisively and drastically, to use the groundswell of public support to crack down hard on opponents.
