Hubby and I both found this article interesting but saw flaws in somewhat different aspects.
He believes the author is in a rut of his own, and that rut is called "libertarianism". Author seems to think that if only competent people could freely operate in a meritocracy, a better society would evolve. The point that hubby made is that these 1.5/8 pct of the population are competent, but ONLY IN A DEVELOPED SOCIETY. Take that same 1.5/8 pct and plunk them down on a savannah somewhere, and all of that high IQ complex thinking quickly becomes some predator's lunch. The rest of society is needed to make that complex problem-solving necessary, or even possible.
We both stumbled on the notion of competitiveness, productivity etc. Author doesn't describe what the ultimate purpose of competitiveness is for. For competition's sake?
So it kind of boils down to "what kind of society would you like to see?" One that is dedicated to beating the pants offa every other society in the world? One dedicated to endless growth? One dedicated to improving the living standard of everyone in that society, at least up to a minimum level? One dedicated to sustainability? One dedicated to spiritual growth? One dedicated to the individual acquisition of money and power? There are a lot of possible goals, not all mutually exclusive.
