Maybe because almost every politician is worse than a charlatan? They view the American people as pigs to be slaughtered for their own personal power? At least Trump pays lip service to America. Most politicians don't invoke the concept unless there's some bogeyman we're supposed to cough up money to fight.

Democrats need to take on an issue many would rather avoid: Donald Trump and the future of democracy if he’s re-elected. It may seem safer to stick to traditional kitchen table issues — don’t poke the bear — but it’s time to put the most important cards down on the table and have a serious conversation with the American people about what Donald Trump intends to do if he wins again. The writing on the wall is clear. But far too many people remain unaware of Trump’s 2025 plan, or they don’t take it seriously.
We all know the story about Ben Franklin emerging from the Constitutional Convention and telling a woman who asked what type of government they’d created, “a Republic, if you can keep it.” The 2024 election is the moment where we find out if we can. If Trump wins in 2024, we lose the Republic. That’s not drama, and that’s not overstatement. That’s what Trump is promising.
Trump and his allies have begun mapping out specific plans for using the federal government to punish critics and opponents should he win a second term, with the former president naming individuals he wants to investigate or prosecute and his associates drafting plans to invoke the Insurrection Act on his first day in office to allow him to deploy the military against civil demonstrations.
It sounds positively Stalinist. But, despite the cautionary tale of Trump’s first term in office, it garnered little attention. Project 2025 is the official name for the plan, which is reportedly being run out of the conservative Heritage Foundation.

Among the ideas Trump and his allies have floated:
• Have DOJ investigate former Trump administration officials and allies who have become critics of the former president
• Prosecute DOJ and FBI officials
• End the separation between the White House and DOJ that prevents presidents from using prosecutions as a tool for political advantage or personal revenge
It’s the stuff of banana republics. It’s a menu for the end of democracy.

Later this week, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi, is expected to testify at the criminal trial of David DePape, the man who viciously attacked him with a hammer. DePape had planned to attack Speaker Pelosi, who was not at home. In opening statements, prosecutors said they will show that DePape had a list of Democratic officials he planned to attack, including California Representative Adam Schiff and California Governor Gavin Newsom.
DePape’s lawyer told the jury she wouldn’t dispute the attack. Instead, she planned to show that her client believed scores of crazy conspiracy theories and thought he was fighting child abuse and corruption. DePape, a Trump supporter, bought into a whole host of QAnon conspiracy theories. The charges against him are assault and kidnapping, and the apparent defense strategy is to dispute whether the DePape intended to prevent Nancy Pelosi from carrying out her official duties, which is an element of the federal kidnapping charge against him.
The defense will have an uphill battle establishing even that limited defense. In their opening statement, prosecutors played a tape recording of a jailhouse call DePape made to a reporter. “I have an important message for everyone in America: You’re welcome,” DePape said. “I would also like to apologize. ... I’m so sorry I couldn’t get more of them.” He said he should have gone to Pelosi’s home more prepared.

A Trump campaign spokesman defended the former president's use of the word "vermin" to describe his political enemies, calling critics "snowflakes" whose "entire existence will be crushed" if Trump wins in 2024.
Why it matters: Some historians have compared Trump's dehumanizing language — including his claim that undocumented immigrants are "poisoning the blood of our country" — to the rhetoric of fascist dictators like Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini.
"[T]o call your opponent vermin, to dehumanize them, is to not only open the door, but to walk through the door toward the most ghastly kinds of crimes," presidential historian Jon Meacham said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."
"[T]hose who try to make that ridiculous assertion are clearly snowflakes grasping for anything because they are suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome and their entire existence will be crushed when President Trump returns to the White House," Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung told the Post in a statement.
Cheung later said he was referencing their "sad, miserable existence" instead of their "entire existence," the Post noted.
Driving the news: In a Veterans Day speech in New Hampshire on Saturday, Trump vowed to "root out the communists, Marxists, fascists and the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country that lie and steal and cheat on elections."
He then posted the same message on Truth Social, including the word "vermin" often used by Hitler and Mussolini to denigrate Jews and their political enemies.
Trump went on to say that "the threat from outside forces is far less sinister, dangerous and grave than the threat from within."
The big picture: Trump's increasingly violent rhetoric — calling for a U.S. military leader to be executed, mocking a near-fatal assault on a congressional spouse, urging police to shoot potential shoplifters — has become a staple of his brand as he faces the threat of conviction in four different criminal cases.

Trump Team Responds to Hitler Accusations by Proving Accusers Right
Donald Trump’s rhetoric is becoming more dictatorial with each passing day.
“Those who try to make that ridiculous assertion are clearly snowflakes grasping for anything because they are suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome and their entire existence will be crushed when President Trump returns to the White House,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung defended Trump’s comments.
Cheung later added that he meant to say their “sad, miserable existence” instead of their “entire existence.”
Cheung’s statement is a chilling example of just how extreme Trump has become. His team isn’t even trying to downplay or explain away his authoritarian tendencies. Instead, his team is leaning into it.

Former President Trump's allies are pre-screening the ideologies of thousands of potential foot soldiers, as part of an unprecedented operation to centralize and expand his power at every level of the U.S. government if he wins in 2024, officials involved in the effort tell Axios.
Why it matters: Hundreds of people are spending tens of millions of dollars to install a pre-vetted, pro-Trump army of up to 54,000 loyalists across government to rip off the restraints imposed on the previous 46 presidents.
• The screening for ready-to-serve loyalists has already begun, driven in part by artificial intelligence from tech giant Oracle, contracted for the project.
• Social media histories are already being plumbed.
What’s happening: When Trump took office in 2017, he included many conventional Republicans in his Cabinet and key positions. Those officials often curtailed his behavior and power.
• Trump himself spends little time plotting governing plans. But he is well aware of a highly coordinated campaign to be ready to jam government offices with loyalists willing to stretch traditional boundaries.
If Trump were to win, thousands of Trump-first loyalists would be ready for legal, judicial, defense, regulatory and domestic policy jobs. His inner circle plans to purge anyone viewed as hostile to the hard-edged, authoritarian sounding plans he calls "Agenda 47."
• The people leading these efforts aren't figures like Rudy Giuliani. They're smart, experienced people, many with very unconventional and elastic views of presidential power and traditional rule of law.
Behind the scenes: The government-in-waiting is being orchestrated by the Heritage Foundation's well-funded Project 2025 which already has published a 920-page policy book from 400+ contributors.
Think of it as a transition team set in motion years in advance.
• Heritage president Kevin Roberts tells us his apparatus is "orders of magnitude" bigger than anything ever assembled for a party out of power.
• The policy series, "Mandate for Leadership," dates back to the 1980s. But Paul Dans, director of Project 2025, told us: "Never before has the entire movement ... banded together to construct a comprehensive plan to deconstruct the out-of-touch and weaponized administrative state."

Three weeks ago, Rep. Mike Johnson wrote a letter to his fellow Republicans saying that he was sure they could pass all 12 outstanding appropriations bills by.......this week. In the event, Republicans have passed zero appropriations bills.
The reason for this is the usual one: Hard-right members of the Freedom Caucus have stalled any progress unless they get the massive cuts they want. So now it's time to punt—again—and pass a continuing resolution to prevent a government shutdown. Unfortunately—well, take a guess:
On Tuesday, some of those same hard-line conservatives who moved to oust Mr. McCarthy vented their anger at Mr. Johnson. The House Freedom Caucus, a group of approximately three dozen hard-right lawmakers, announced that it would oppose the measure.
Johnson has now been backed into the same corner that got Kevin McCarthy fired: The only way to keep the government open is to pass a continuing resolution maintaining current spending levels with help from Democrats.
So now Republicans will have another couple of months to pass appropriations bills. Can they do it? Or will it be the same old story in January? Maybe this will be the first time ever that an entire year goes by without passing a budget — just a year's worth of continuing resolutions.

When Trump tells you he’s an authoritarian, believe him.
He’s talking like a fascist. He’s planning fascist policies. He’s staffing up with fascists.
In a country where democracy is basically a civic religion, politicians generally don’t announce their intention to attack it when running for office. But Donald Trump is openly campaigning on a platform of tearing democracy down.
Calling one’s opponents subhuman and vowing aggressive action against them is a hallmark of classical fascist rhetoric. Trump has used such language. He claimed immigrants were “poisoning the blood of our country.”
This incendiary language is backed by an incendiary policy agenda.
