I had a buddy back in high school who was half-Native American and one of the more interesting people I've ever known. He was super in-tune with nature, and had dream catchers up in his house. I remember one day we left a burger joint and witnessed a cop shoot and kill a rabid racoon. He would not rest until we got some tobacco so he could give it as an offering and did a little ritual before the city came and removed the remains.
It's a shame we lost touch shortly after high school when he met a much older woman (my age now) and moved down to Florida to live with her. If memory serves, she spent a few years with him before letting him go, knowing that the age difference would never work out. But not before she made a career man out of a guy who was just kind of floundering his way through life without any real plan. I think he became a doctor? The last time I ever saw him was when we went downtown Chicago and met up with his older brother at the IMAX and watched Star Wars: Episode 2.
Anyhow...
Back in my HS days, there was no internet. I'd never even heard of Burning Man. But he wouldn't stop talking about it and how he wanted to go. There was no way I was getting in a car and spending a week in the middle of the desert back in 1996. He went alone and had a great time though.
I just looked at the history of the event. For the first 4 years it was free. The next 3 years they requested a $15 to $25 donation. By 1993 they required a $40 entrance fee. When my buddy went in 1996 he paid $35.
1996 had a death and some injuries, making insurance a necessity going forward. The next year pre-sale tickets were $65 and it was $75 at the gate.
Fast forward to today...
"Low Income" ticket price: $225, otherwise tickets ranged from $575 to $2750! And that's not even including the $150 for parking your car in the mud!
I'm sure my buddy doesn't go to Burning Man anymore, and hasn't for quite some time. With those prices, that sounds corporate AF and I'm sure whatever meaning it once held has been hollowed out and it's just become another place for rich people to meet up and do dumb shit for 10 days.
