They do, Russia has Nuclear weapons same reason why people pay attention to Kim Jong-un and his own hissy fits. Russia might not have the best military but its strong enough with nukes to wreck a smaller nation and causes mass havoc and mayhem and death, Russia's militray might have been hyped but it is still dangerous, death its what armies do.
Ruskies supply a lot of stuff to Europe, material, natural gas, oil etc It jacks prices up and force Europeans into a panic to buy elsewhere and can hit the already damaged world economy supply and trade. There are a whole lot of nations that won't fully sanction Russia, there are lots of non-NATO nations from Africa, South America, South East Asia, India, Pakistan, Iran, the Middle East...perhaps the world's political balance is shifting?

European countries decided a few years ago that they didn't want to be in longterm contracts anymore bc they felt they were paying too much. They wanted to be in the spot market. So they either let their long-term contracts lapse, or (in Poland's case) take Russia to court to break their long term contracts.
Also, the EU started playing games, first with South Stream and then with North Stream II. Sorry to say, but high gas prices are entirely the EUs fault.
And then sanctioning Russia and trying to destroy the ruble has caused such finacial and economic instability that other prices have alos gone up (helped along by the USAs eay money policy.)
There are reasons to care about what Russia does, but generally speaking, if the west had't been trying on such a persistent basis to fuck Russia over since 1990 Russia wouldn't be doing what it is doing today. And I take SIX's point: what good does it do to torpedo your own economy bc of a pointless itch to regime-change Russia? Let's take care of our own problems first, OK?

Yup. It's damn near impossible (and probably not healthy) to maintain that level of disgust. Putin is a sick fck - that's not ever going away. Putin’s Hunger for Money
Why Bill Browder, formerly one of Russia’s biggest investors, thinks the war in Ukraine is all about money.

Putin has tried assassinating Bill Browder because he knows too much about Putin and has successfully lobbied Congress and 33 other countries to harass Putin for being a thief. This is a podcast, but here is the transcript:
S1: Bill Browder wanted to make lots of money, but not for the usual reasons.
S2: It was a strange motivation. I. I come from an unusual American family. My grandfather was the head of the Communist Party of America, and my father was a left wing, left leaning professor. And so in my teenage rebellion, I decided to put on a suit and tie and become a capitalist to upset my family.
S1: He went to Stanford Business School and he happened to graduate the same year that the Berlin Wall got torn down.
S2: And I had this epiphany one day, which is that if my grandfather was the biggest communist in America and the Berlin Wall has come down, I’m going to become the biggest capitalist in Russia. And that’s what I set out to do.
S1: He eventually did just that. Over about a decade, Browder made billions and became the largest foreign investor in Russia by buying up cheap shares in newly privatized, wildly corrupt Russian companies. His strategy was to expose the companies' corruption and then watch their valuations rise as they went legit. This worked great for a while until powerful people in Russia, in particular, Vladimir Putin, decided they didn’t want Browder shining a spotlight on them and getting rich in the process. In 2005, Browder got booted from Russia permanently. Not long after, Browder’s lawyer, a Russian named Sergei Magnitsky, who helped Browder expose corruption, was arrested, jailed, tortured and eventually killed by Russian authorities. Browder has since made it his life’s calling to avenge Magnitsky’s death. Along the way, he’s become such a thorn in Putin’s side that the Russian president took a moment during a 2018 Helsinki press conference with President Trump to suggest that America should hand Browder over to Russian authorities.

S1: President Trump had no objection to that plan. I think that’s.
S2: An incredible offer. Thank you. I thought, my God, the most powerful man in the free world. President of the United States. Trump was offering to hand me over and I expected that, you know, any moment for blacked out Suburbans from the Department of Homeland Security would pull up and grab me and put me on a rendition flight to Moscow. And I would then be tortured for a while to get me to confess to various crimes I didn’t commit. And then after they got those confessions, they would then kill me.
S1: For years, Bill Browder has been telling the world that Vladimir Putin and his oligarchs are a scourge on humanity. But a lot of the world didn’t pay much heed until Putin invaded Ukraine.
S2: I would say that I’m beyond furious. I believe that if governments, Western governments, the U.S. government, the British government, the European Union had been tougher on Putin for all sorts of terrible things that he did, that he might have had a different calculation about doing this unbelievably sadistic mass murder of Ukrainian civilians.

A few years before the fall of the Soviet Union, Russian satirist Vladimir Voinovich imagined a story about a former KGB agent who became head of state, created a class of corrupt oligarchs around him, draped himself in the mantle of the Russian Orthodox Church and launched a bloody war to remain in power.
Voinovich’s 1986 novel “Moscow 2042” predicted Vladimir Putin. It was not necessarily a hard thing to do. Putin and his crony elites put Russia on the road to autocracy after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
However strategic the strongman was, Putin failed to predict how events would play out. He underestimated the ferocity of Ukrainian resistance and misjudged ordinary Russians.
It’s the classic mistake of every tyrant: Surround yourself only with sycophants, suck-ups and yes-men, and you never get a reality check in your echo chamber. Eliminate dissenting politicians, and you assume that means you’ve eliminated dissent.
The Russian president is now playing a “face-saving” game in Ukraine. The Ukrainians sunk Russia’s Black Sea flagship, the cruiser Moskva, and have killed six generals. Low morale and defection plague conscripts, some of whom blow up their own equipment, according to Ukrainians. Mercenaries are being called in.
Shrinking his ambitions, Putin appears now to be aiming only to seize the eastern Ukrainian region of the Donbas, where Russian separatists already held sway. Meanwhile, with the ferocity of this war, even some of those pro-Russian Ukrainians are questioning their past allegiances.
