“Why are we not using nuclear weapons, which our forebearers developed and stockpiled with the full might of the nation precisely for this purpose?” asked Russian oligarch Konstantin Malofeyev in June. He’s not the only one who thinks the country should launch tactical nukes on Ukrainian forces.
Vladimir Putin’s government, before its February 2022 invasion, had been threatening to use its most destructive weapons in Ukraine. In early February of that year, Russia’s nuclear forces participated in an exercise widely interpreted at the time as a warning. Then, on February 24, the first day of the so-called “special military operation,” the Russian president spoke of “consequences that you have never experienced in your history.”
The threats intimidated the U.S. and its European partners. Since then, the ‘nuclear ace’ has appeared in Russian official and media rhetoric almost every month.
So is the Kremlin bluffing now?

Ukraine Finally Has a Theory of Victory. Will It Work?
Kyiv has developed a strategy for winning the war. Now all it needs is time.

Serhii, a 46-year-old Ukrainian army officer who ran a furniture store in civilian life, has survived four years of war against Russia. These days, he commands a battalion of 300 troops in Ukraine’s front-line city of Sloviansk. After two combat injuries and the loss of many friends, his take on the war is anchored in harsh experience.
So it is all the more striking to hear his assessment of where things stand. “We’ve reached a turning point,” he told me during my visit to Sloviansk in late June. The Ukrainians, he said, are striking devastating blows against Russia’s energy infrastructure, vital logistics, and the factories that produce critical components for its high-tech weaponry. He particularly applauded Kyiv’s campaign to sever the supply lines that provide Russian forces in occupied Crimea with ammunition, fuel, and food. So how long will it take to cut off the peninsula entirely? “I think we can do it by the end of the summer,” he answered, noting that this would be a huge humiliation for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has cited Russia’s 2014 seizure of the Ukrainian peninsula as one of his lasting achievements.
One year ago, it would have been hard to classify Serhii’s view of the war as anything other than wishful thinking. Back then, despite a few remarkable successes, Kyiv’s overall war effort seemed scattershot and unfocused. Yet over the past few months, the world has witnessed a dramatic transformation in Kyiv’s ability to take the fight to the Russians.
One development stands out: For the first time since Moscow’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukraine’s military leaders have worked out a coherent strategy for victory—a plan designed to play to Kyiv’s strengths and exploit Russian weaknesses. Mykhailo Gonchar, the president of the Strategy XXI Center for Global Studies in Kyiv, told me that the Ukrainian leadership now believes that it can “cut off a significant share of the revenues financing the [Russian] war budget, trigger a fuel crisis, and surgically sever the critical links in the defense-industrial supply chain, thereby reducing—or even preventing—the production of precision-guided weapons.” The ultimate goal of this and other elements of the new strategy: to stymie Moscow’s ability to continue the war while keeping Ukrainian casualties to a minimum.
The underlying vision is not entirely new. In a paper published last year, former Ukrainian Defense Minister Andriy Zagorodnyuk provided a detailed outline for what he called “strategic neutralization” of Russia’s military capacities. As an illustration, he pointed to Ukraine’s stunning success at chasing Russia’s vaunted Black Sea Fleet out of its home port in the Crimean city of Sevastopol and essentially eliminating it as a threat. Ukraine did this without a traditional surface fleet of its own, relying instead on the use of naval drones to destroy enemy ships.
What former British Armed Forces Minister James Heappey described as the “functional defeat” of the Russian fleet—in other words, not its total destruction but its reduction to impotence—now serves as a model for what Ukraine hopes to achieve in other domains. Rather than trying to grind down Russian forces at the cost of huge losses (an approach exemplified by the disastrous summer counteroffensive of 2023), the Ukrainians plan to render Russian forces in Crimea ineffective by degrading their sources of supply.
Similarly, the long-range drone and missile campaign against oil refineries, fuel storage facilities, and pipelines, striking ever deeper in the Russian interior, aspires to choke off Putin’s ability to wage war at the source. Ukraine's commander-in-chief: pace of Russian advance has more than halved

General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, has said that the pace of Russia's advance has fallen by more than half during the first six months of 2026, while Russian forces are suffering average monthly losses of around 32,000 personnel killed and wounded.

Details: According to Syrskyi, Ukrainian forces continue to conduct a defensive operation combined with stabilisation measures while carrying out active operations and maintaining the operational initiative on certain fronts.
"At present, the ratio of our assault operations to those of the enemy is approximately 40 to 60. It is thanks to the actions of the defence forces that the pace of the Russian advance fell by more than half during the first half of 2026," he said.
Syrskyi added that the rate of territorial gains by both sides had effectively reached parity. "There is a steady trend towards increasing the ratio of territory liberated by Ukraine's defence forces compared with areas where the enemy manages to advance," he noted.
Syrskyi also said that 697 targets inside Russia had been struck by Ukraine's deep strike capabilities during the first half of the year, causing direct and indirect economic losses estimated at at least US$6.1 billion. He added that the middle strike campaign had also been effective, with 7,028 Russian targets hit over the same period.
According to Syrskyi, Ukrainian artillery carried out more than 456,000 fire missions, the rocket forces launched more than 1,140 strikes, the Air Force conducted more than 1,100 strikes, and support units completed around 1,400 missions.
During the six-month review meeting, Syrskyi also stressed the need to rotate frontline personnel at least once every 60 days. "This is a matter of our soldiers' lives and health, their combat effectiveness, and treating people fairly," he said.

Losing in Ukraine, is Putin finally down to his nukes?

Just over three years ago, we assessed that it was no longer a question of whether Russia loses in Ukraine, but only when. At that time, Ukrainian deep-strike drones were just beginning to threaten the Russian interior, and Ukraine’s army was backing a cross-border raid into the Belgorod Oblast.
As it still is today, the Russian Army was then stagnant across the front lines in the Donbas and in southern Ukraine.
Moscow’s response at that time? Russian President Vladimir Putin began raising the specter of potentially using nuclear weapons in Ukraine. He authorized the transfer of nuclear weapons to Belarus. He also signaled that he might expand the war to NATO when he withdrew Russia from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe.
Fast forward to today. Putin is once again rattling the nuclear saber, as his military loses, on average, 30,000 troops a month in Ukraine. Kyiv’s deep-strikes against Russia’s oil and energy sector are pummeling the Russian economy.
In May, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that it had delivered “nuclear munitions to field storage points in the operational area of a missile unit in the Republic of Belarus as part of military exercises.” Moscow’s message was primarily aimed at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his generals, but again, it was also aimed at NATO.
For years now, Moscow has conducted a hybrid campaign against Europe by threatening nuclear sites in the West. Last month, Daniel Salisbury of The International Institute for Strategic Studies observed that “Russia is interested in manipulating nuclear risks to turn up the pressure on Western capitals.”
Russia achieved this by increasing drone activity “around nuclear weapons and nuclear energy” throughout Europe. The Institute examined 144 such incidents “beginning in late 2024.” The Institute concluded that Russia is behind the activity and that, to date, Moscow is essentially acting throughout Europe with “substantial impunity.”
The Kremlin’s targets are concerning. It is believed that Russia is using its shadow merchant fleet to surveil sensitive NATO bases in the United Kingdom, including RAF Feltwell, RAF Fairford, and RAF Mildenhall.
Mildenhall hosts U.S. Air Force planes tasked with carrying air-launched nuclear gravity bombs.
Similar unmanned aerial vehicle sightings were observed at other NATO nuclear bases, including Kleine-Brogel Air Base in Belgium and Volkel Air Base in the Netherlands. Plus, five Russian-launched aerial drones were detected late last year near the launch site of France’s sea-launched nuclear missile arsenal.
Russia’s nuclear psyop has also targeted European nuclear power plants. In November 2025, three drones were detected flying over the Doel Nuclear Power Plant in Belgium.
Moscow’s overarching purpose is to get the West to stand down in Ukraine by creating fear around Russia causing a radiological event somewhere in Europe. In effect, Putin is weaponizing nuclear fear through hybrid warfare.
Putin’s approach is not new. We warned in late August 2022 that Putin was in effect turning the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in southern Ukraine into a ‘Nuclear Force Z.’ In the early years of the war, Russian military vehicles often were marked with the Z insignia. Russia captured the facility in southern Ukraine after heavy fighting during the opening months of the war. Putin’s decision to forcibly seize the nuclear plant threatened to create a humanitarian and ecological disaster.
Soon afterward, Russia hypocritically accused Kyiv of shelling the power plant and “endangering the European continent.” But it was not Ukraine threatening Europe; it was Putin messaging that he was willing, at least in theory, to create a nuclear disaster on the continent.

Yeah. She would have loved that. She had quite a few of them. I remember a woman I used to work with at my last good job who was probably around my age right now who was pretty impressed when I knew what "old in the tooth" meant. I didn't think the phrase itself was old in the tooth, but then I realized a lot of the things that I say aren't things that were said by my friends all the time. I've always generally gotten along with older people than I do those my age and younger than me.
That's probably why I had to look that up, because I didn't know what it meant in your reply, but I just assumed it had to be an idiom I either never heard before or it just went completely over my head if I had.
