Yeah, I remember way back when, learning about that in my medical mycology class. Of course, the gruesome photos definitely fixed the information in my brain.

Back when I studied it, it was uniformly fatal, the facial form always spread to the brain, and it was a coup de grace of uncontrolled diabetes.

But now it seems it's being caught much earlier and treatment is much better, and it's only 50% fatal; and the fatalities tend to be from the pulmonary form rather from the oro-facial (including the sinuses) form.
