Tree planting 'has mind-blowing potential' to tackle climate crisis

Research shows a half trillion trees could be planted to capture huge amount of carbon dioxide.

Planting billions of trees across the world is by far the biggest and cheapest way to tackle the climate crisis, according to scientists, who have made the first calculation of how many more trees could be planted without encroaching on crop land or urban areas.

Trees, alone, will not save us from Climate Change

We have emitted about 450 gigatonnes of carbon since the start of the Industrial Revolution. A new paper is getting a lot of attention for its claim that the earth has about 2 billion acres of land that are currently unused and could support the planting of 500 billion trees. Once the trees were grown, they’d capture about 205 gigatonnes of carbon. That sounds great, but let’s give it some context: At our current rate, we’ll add another 205 gigatonnes in less than 20 years. Unless we do something about actual emissions, we will have added at least 500 gigatonnes of additional carbon in 50 years, bringing us to total emissions of about a 1,000 gigatonnes of carbon. The trees would make only a small difference.

By all means, we should take this seriously and plant lots of trees. But don’t fool yourself into thinking this is any kind of free ticket.

I'm going to put this is the "platform" thread, but here's my recommendation on how to tackle climate change:

Carbon tax, carbon tax, carbon tax.
Environmental restoration, including north-south corridors, forest managment to reduce fires (eg mile-wide firebreaks of thinned/burned forest land), planting more trees even in urban areas, marshland and intertidal restoration (to slow storm surges)
Carbon-capturing farming practices
Green energy production
Home and commercial building retrofitting for energy-conservation
Grid upgrade for robustness and efficiency
Cutting the military budget by at least 50% and ending our foreign interventions

Did I mention a carbon tax? It's the most automatic and even-handed way to reduce use of fossil fuels.

Just another reminder of what the shit everybody buys that they don't need is doing to the environment.

The one upside of shipping all of the jobs overseas is that we don't have to see this type of shit anymore while we buy a new cell phone every year or two, and drink bottled water all day long instead of getting it out of the tap.

The climate math is brutally clear: While the world can't be healed within the next few years, it may be fatally wounded by negligence until 2020.

Abstract

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous, and considerable quantities prevail even in the Arctic; however, there are large knowledge gaps regarding pathways to the North. To assess whether atmospheric transport plays a role, we analyzed snow samples from ice floes in Fram Strait. For comparison, we investigated snow samples from remote (Swiss Alps) and populated (Bremen, Bavaria) European sites. MPs were identified by Fourier transform infrared imaging in 20 of 21 samples. The MP concentration of Arctic snow was significantly lower (0 to 14.4 × 103 N liter-1) than European snow (0.19 × 103 to 154 × 103 N liter-1) but still substantial. Polymer composition varied strongly, but varnish, rubber, polyethylene, and polyamide dominated overall. Most particles were in the smallest size range indicating large numbers of particles below the detection limit of 11 µm. Our data highlight that atmospheric transport and deposition can be notable pathways for MPs meriting more research.

What has this new EPA done?

A separate analysis, by Harvard Law School, found that such rollbacks could lead to at least 80,000 additional deaths per decade and cause respiratory problems for more than a million people.

So, yeah, voting for Obama was a better thing FOR EVERYONE ON THE PLANET.
