I'm not sure I buy 10 years - or 5, or 50. But when the arctic heats up to 40F above normal, and Europe is predicted to have a(nother) record-breaking heat wave, it indicates something big is going on.

I'm curious why you reject all the data Jack. Is it because not being 'A Man Completely in Charge of Your Own Destiny' ™ threatens your sobriety?

When all else fails, there is the Space Sunshade.

Creating this sunshade in space was estimated to cost in excess of US$130 billion over 20 years with an estimated lifetime of 50-100 years. The mass of the Space Sunshade will total of almost 20 million tonnes and blocks 2% of the sunlight, deflecting it off into space, enough to halt global warming. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_sunshade

The real cost will probably be $13 to 130 trillion, instead of $130 billion, for a 20 year project. But whatever the cost, then we get into an argument about who will pay for it. Not Jack. I could see coming to a war between America and China about who pays how much and who is in charge of the Sunshade.

Why does everybody keep assuming my attitude regarding this is because I'm rejecting any data?

Maybe I really do mean "cool".

Um. No. I'm not going to pay for your 13 Trillion dollar sun shade. I cleared $13k last year after taxes. $11k if you include property taxes.

Even if you taxed my net pay 100%, I would only account for 0.000000001% of your sunshade debt.

Good luck finding investors though.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

It's not really investing so much as it is a global protection racket. If you don't pay, America (or China, depending on which actually builds and controls it) adjusts the Space Sunshade to either burn down your country in summer or freeze it in winter. If your country pays, you get mild and pleasant weather. If your country doesn't pay, too bad for you and your country -- here comes the tornadoes.

Then you're down with the destruction of the planet, along with of course, your place in it, probably during your life time?

Well... I kind of have to be, if that's really what's happening here.

It would certainly take all of the worries off of my plate, and make them all seem rather microscopic at the same time. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't even need to ever get dentures if it happens as soon as 5 years from now.

I don't worry about things I have no control over. What you're discussing in this thread is something that none of us have any control over, beyond recycling. No, who you vote for doesn't amount to squat.

If the rich and powerful are going to destroy mankind and most of the wildlife along with us. Shame on them. If the damage is already so bad that there's no reversing it, then why even bother talking about it?

I recycle. My conscience is clean.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

If I had to boil down my stance on the environment to only two words, they would be existential nihilism.

And I mean that on a species-wide level. Not just me.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I understand accepting the things you have no control over. But I personally am not ready to give up the fight, even though I live in a deep, deep blue state focused on being anti-Trump and ignoring the pressing issues. So I'll continue to vote my conscience and not my tribe.

That said, if one really accepts the end of the world is nigh, one might wish to give consideration to how much you're willing to live through, and what exit plan you'll create. If the answers are 'everything', and 'it will have to carry me off through circumstance', well, at least you know.

I guess them's the answers then!

I appreciate the conversation.

Aside from recycling and doing your best to conserve energy, that's all one really can do. I don't think that there is an ounce of difference in the long run between the parties, but I also know that I'm not right about everything either, which is why despite my misgivings I still vote as well.

I think one of the differences between us with this is our ages. I can't afford to be a single issue voter, even if it is something as important as this. The Democrat party if 2019 is actively against my very existence, demographically speaking. The way that some of them talk down to me on a regular basis for not actively voting against my own interests and virtue signalling loud and proud to the world that I am doing so is really all the proof anyone needs of that.

I accept that there is a problem. I don't know if I believe that it truly is the end of the world though... Either now or in the long term. But if it is, there isn't anything I can do about it. I accept both that I cannot do anything about it and that it will happen if that is the case.

Second likes to say "You voted for Trump. You're part of the problem". Second also likes to talk out of the other side of his head and whine about the electoral college too. My vote for President didn't matter by a magnitude of hundreds of thousands of votes in my state.

As for an "exit plan", well, as depressing a topic as that is, there's always options for that. I'd imagine it would have to be extremely bad for me to really put any thought into any of them though. Living with the physical, psychological and social consequences of my poor choices in life and trying to claw my way out of them has not been a picnic by any stretch. I'm not going to bitch about how hard and uncomfortable my day to day life is since I'm squarely to blame for all of it. I'm just pointing out the fact that in many ways I'm probably more ready for the worst than most people you know are... at least in the States.

No worries.

I should probably make it clear that I'm not a nihilist to be a defeatist or to be depressing. The opposite couldn't be more true. This is my take on these particular issues because I don't know if I could function with all of the other crap I have to deal with from day to day if I obsessed over things like this that I don't have any control over.

And in the end, if these are our last days, I can't say that we're going to be missed, and nobody should shed a tear for us.

Do Right, Be Right. :)
