Conservative George Will says vote against Republicans in midterms

Calling lame duck House Speaker Paul Ryan and others the “president’s poodles,” conservative columnist George Will says the virtual radio silence from Republicans in power over President Trump’s border policy means the GOP has to go.
Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy at the border was “the most telegenic example of misrule” and it provided “fresh if redundant evidence for the principle by which” independents and moderate Republicans should vote in the November midterms, Will wrote Friday in the Washington Post. As part of the policy — which Trump pinned on loopholes created by Democrats — families were separated and young children held in questionable conditions before the president later reversed the separation mandate.
Will said a GOP majority’s position to fill any upcoming Supreme Court vacancies is too high a price to pay for undermining the executive and legislative dysfunction he tagged in this column and other comments.
Writes Will, “the congressional Republican caucuses must be substantially reduced. So substantially that their remnants, reduced to minorities, will be stripped of the Constitution’s Article I powers that they have been too invertebrate to use against the current wielder of Article II powers.”
“They will then have leisure time to wonder why they worked so hard to achieve membership in a legislature whose unexercised muscles have atrophied because of people like them,” he said.
“Not because James Madison’s system has failed but because today’s abject careerists have failed to be worthy of it,” Will wrote. “Congressional Republicans (congressional Democrats are equally supine toward Democratic presidents) have no higher ambition than to placate this president.”
Party criticism comes after a tumultuous week for Trump.

Gaslighting is a tactic of psychological abuse in which the victim is made to doubt their own sanity, only here the abuser is the White House, and the victim is the American people. The Trump administration is sending up so many conflicting versions of reality that they make us doubt what is and is not real. The past week alone has provided one of the most gruesome examples of this, as it seeks to confuse and distract us from the plight of about 2,300 immigrant children separated from their families with no plan for being reunited. Those children are being held in detention centers, or flown across the country, with no guarantee that they will ever see their parents again. On Thursday, Trump signed an executive order which he claimed would end family separation; it does so only in name. The so-called “zero-tolerance” policy will still be enforced, but now the Trump administration plans to hold families in detention centers together and indefinitely. They have made no statement on efforts for reuniting the families who have already been torn apart — but it doesn’t look like it will be happening anytime soon.
There was so much deception in regard to this policy, the explanations emerging from the White House began to seem like Wheel of Fortune but for disinformation. Amid public outrage over family separation at the border, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristjen Nielsen claimed that the Trump administration had no such policy. That tweet was still on her feed when she drafted the executive order to end family separation at the border: effectively ending a policy she had claimed did not exist less than a week earlier.
Before that, there were various attempts to obliterate any reasonable comprehension of the issue. Trump said that Congress needed to act — claiming that his administration was simply upholding the laws and ambiguously (and falsely) blaming Democrats. In fact, there is no law enforcing family separation at the border. The decision to separate immigrant children from their parents comes from a policy enforced by the Trump administration in which all immigrants illegally crossing the border are prosecuted.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions was the foremost advocate for the zero-tolerance approach, and, he too engaged in an aggressive campaign of deception. He tried to cite the Bible as grounds for the administration's policies, an excuse that was instantly met with pushback from a number of Christian groups. Then, on Thursday, he said that the Trump administration “never really intended” to separate families, despite being on-the-record, on camera saying precisely the opposite.
All of this came amid optics that further scrambled the conversation. Nielsen and senior White House advisor Stephen Miller, a key architect of the zero-tolerance policy that led to family separation, were both chased out of Mexican restaurants. As the furor mounted over the impossible cruelty of stealing children from their parents at the Mexican border, it would require Olympic-level mental gymnastics to explain that there was not some deliberation in this choice. Such was the calculation that surrounded all of the White House’s conduct around the zero-tolerance policy.
On Wednesday, Trump ended his own family separation policy with an executive order, which was also an unnecessary display. The President seems to enjoy the pageantry of signing his name in front of the cameras, although he could have ended family separation with a call to the Department of Homeland Security. While the White House has said about family separation everything from it is necessary, to it is not happening, to it is the fault of Democrats, or a sacred duty, Trump was capable of stopping it all by picking up the phone. True to form, the President wanted applause, and Ivanka Trump tweeted in praise of her father. He wanted a congratulations for putting a stop to his own cruelty in an effort to confuse you into thinking he’s actually the good guy. This is gaslighting.
