Trump on Saturday told reporters that “things are going very well with North Korea,” and that Washington and Pyongyang “have made a lot of progress as far as denuclearization is concerned.” Trump has tended to downplay the threat from North Korea in tweets: “everybody can now feel much safer” and that "There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea." Again, why has Trump not been told about those 20 missile sites?
A Pentagon report released on Thursday, however, said that North Korea’s missile and nuclear program remained an “extraordinary threat” to the United States.

I also remember an agreement that Republicans broke with North Korea. In exchange for shutting down a nuclear reactor that makes plutonium for North Korean nukes, the USA and South Korea would provide electricity for North Korea. Republican Senators would not pay, so the reactor kept on making more and more bomb material.

It came down to typical Republican confusion about how to get what you want. According to the GOP, the North Koreans should not build nukes, but America should also not pay to get them to stop. The North Koreans should just stop because America loudly demanded they stop.

In exchange, the United States agreed to lead an international consortium to construct two light water power reactors, and to provide 500,000 tons of heavy fuel oil per year until the first reactor came online with a target date of 2003. Furthermore, the United States was to provide "formal assurances against the threat or use of nuclear weapons by the U.S." [21]

The Nuclear Threat Initiative www.nti.org is being polite, but at every step of the way the GOP builds roadblocks to prevent disarming the nuclear nations. Trump will probably be no different. He will want to skip a few steps along the way to denuclearizing North Korea, because the steps cost money and require patience and fulfilling promises. He won't take the steps. He will blame N Korea for everything gone wrong, not himself or his Senate Majority.

North Korea won't disarm because Trump has a new nuke, one that is perfect for assassinating Kim Jong-un when launched from a sub just off shore of N Korea. Kim will definitely mention it when he sees Trump next month:

The National Nuclear Security Administration says production of the weapon, known as the W76-2, has begun at its Pantex Plant in the Texas Panhandle. Last year the Trump administration made the case for the development of a smaller nuclear weapon that could be launched from a submarine. The Energy Department would not provide details about the W76-2, but it's believed to have a yield of around 5 to 7 kilotons, Kristensen says. That smaller yield is probably created by removing or disabling the secondary stage of the W76-1.
If Trump wants Korea to disarm, it was not smart for him to sign an appropriations package in September that pays $65 million to modify the W76-1 warhead for the Navy’s Trident II D5 ballistic missile into a W76-2 warhead.

A new American intelligence assessment of global threats has concluded that North Korea is “unlikely to give up” all of its nuclear stockpiles, and that Iran is not “currently undertaking the key nuclear weapons-development activity” needed to make a bomb, directly contradicting two top tenets of President Trump’s foreign policy. Daniel R. Coats, the director of national intelligence, also challenged Mr. Trump’s insistence that the Islamic State had been defeated, a key rationale for his decision to exit from Syria.

Mr. Coats told the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday that “we currently assess North Korea will seek to retain its W.M.D. capability and is unlikely to completely give up its nuclear weapons and production capability . . . Its leaders ultimately view nuclear weapons as critical to regime survival,” Mr. Coats said.
OK, OK, Coats didn’t call Trump a moron. Still, it’s a little unusual for the intelligence community to publicly say the president is mistaken on three separate major issues. Keep in mind that the heads of the intelligence agencies are all Trump appointees. And apparently they all agree that he’s an idiot.
