I think all those Republican proposals for reducing gun massacres are excellent, if the GOP were willing to pay the price. But every one of the proposals are state and local initiatives, with all costs paid locally. It is a smokescreen for GOP inaction on the national level. Delay long enough and the problem will go away. Soon enough, the Massacre will be forgotten. What was the name of that school? Marjory Stoneman Douglas or Mary Stone Davis or was it . . . ? Central Florida students face school-threat charges after Parkland tragedy

"In the week since a massacre at a South Florida high school claimed the lives of 17 people, more than a dozen children and teenagers have been arrested in Central Florida, accused of threatening local schools.

Authorities say they are taking a strict stance against such incidents, vowing to investigate and prosecute all threats — even when students later claim they were only joking. Several of the students arrested in the past week are facing felony charges.

“Let’s be clear: Their actions have serious consequences and will result in their arrest,” Casselberry Police Chief Larry Krantz said in a statement Thursday, after a 12-year-old girl was arrested as a suspect in threats against three Seminole County schools.

Authorities were made aware of threats the student posted online targeting Casselberry Elementary School, South Seminole Middle School and Sterling Park Elementary School, a police spokesperson said."

So, I guess the NRA isn't the ginormous, megalithic, all encompassing power that it's made out to be, right ? Because, like...omg ! Twitter !!

What's my ' source ' have to do w/ anything ? You can't deflect from the actual fact of what happened, can you ? Here in GA, because Delta decided to take action against completely innocent NRA, the GA legislature took a slap at crony capitalism, and chose NOT to renew its tax free status.

Actions have consequences, and Delta chose poorly.

Those suggestions can't be lunacy because all of them came from wise old men of the GOP. Today Trump had another suggestion, which would require a time machine for him: Trump says he would run into Parkland high school “even if I didn’t have a weapon”. This isn’t the first time Trump has alluded to his own heroics.

In 2015, then-candidate Trump rallied a crowd at a campaign stop in Tennessee in the aftermath of a mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon.

Trump told the crowd that, as holder of a permit to carry a handgun in New York, an attacker would be “shocked” if he encountered him, and that he would act like Charles Bronson in the 1970s action film Death Wish. He egged the crowd to chant “Death Wish.” He also said that “today you can’t make that movie because it’s not politically correct.” (There’s actually a reboot set to premiere this week with Bruce Willis. www.imdb.com/title/tt1137450/ )

Trump also boasted about his permit to carry in New York at an early GOP debate, when responding to a question about that Oregon shooting. “I have a permit, which his very unusual in New York — a permit to carry,” he said during a CNBC debate in October 2015. “And I do carry on occasion. Sometimes, a lot. But I like to be unpredictable.”

I own guns and rifles. Is it hypocritical for me to think other people should have less than me? Yes, it is. How much less? Copy the laws from some other nation, maybe Canada. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_Canada

One gun law I would pass is that anyone, including Trump and Florida politicians, who says they would rush into a building where there was gunfire even if they were not armed is that they have to do just that. It is ridiculous to expect Paul Blart: Mal Cop to save students from assassination. It is very heroic if Blart does, but Trump and the Florida GOP politicians are evil to demand that from anyone but a SWAT team.

I agree with that. You'll never hear me saying that the cops should have rushed in. In fact, I said the exact opposite and that anybody who blames the cops at the school for not going in guns blazing has watched one too many movies.

I don't know about evil. It's stupid, for sure. Even if they were demanded by law to do so, most of them wouldn't do it.

I did not think of that, but now that you mention it, maybe I’ve got too many hunting rifles and shotguns. I prefer beef to venison, and never liked duck, and hate trophy heads of antelope, so hunting for food or show has lost its appeal. And my old hunting buddies are getting older, so hunting for socializing is slowly losing its appeal, one death at a time. And I’ve got stories about Obama-and-Hillary-haters killing themselves with their own guns in “hunting accidents”, maybe because of business and tax evasions, which has soured me on the notion that Republicans are generous and stable members of society, not greedy cheaters, liars, and crooks underneath their outward appearance of rectitude.

Good morning, you braying 6ixJackass. Trump signed a bill making it easier for people with mental illness to buy guns.

On February 28, 2017, Trump signed a law revoking an Obama-era regulatory initiative that made it harder for people with mental illness to buy a gun.

Yet despite this effort to roll back even a very modest effort to restrain the ability of seriously incapacitated people from obtaining deadly weapons, this morning Trump tweeted that there were “so many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed,” implying that someone should have done something to report him.

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump

So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior. Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!

For the record: Flat Out Lunacy the proposals be!

Here's a thought: why not gather all the nutjobs and scatter them throughout the country and start a manhunt. Put targets on the backs of the students, distribute AR-15s to all who want to be a shooter, and hand guns with 9 rounds to the "hunters" and see who wins.

Whoever wins, gets to move on to the next round of games, and so on. Of course, it will be televised and the audience can vote for:

Best Dressed (both targets and shooters)
Best Equipped (both shooters and hunters)
Best FBI Code Name
Best Politico Excuse

We could even have a NRA official unicycle shoot-out. We put an NRA Official (I vote for LapIere) running about on a unicycle, complete with target on his back and he has to run a course 1/4-mile long (with obstacles, including masacred bodies of students. Sort of like a gauntlet. Headshots are worth 100 points, Torso 50 points, a leg 25 points, a toe 5 points. Kill shot 1000 points.

Students, parents and guest stars with guns line up about 25 yards away along a line and shoot at the target on the unicycle. If the NRA official makes it across the 1/4-mile run, he gets to go to another high school at random and do it all over again. We keep doing that until we run out of NRA officials. (It seems only fair).

Let's see how long it takes for them to want to ban war-grade weapons of mass destruction then. Fucking douchebags.

Fun game, right!?

I've heard there's been exactly one instance where a marine actually shot a shooter. Not sure where, but I heard tell. (I'll check into it).

" Trump signed a bill making it easier for people with mental illness to buy guns."

Lie

* Quick answer, it is a known distortion of the fact. Don't have the time now, but this false story is a favorite of the left. Further, this is a common practice of the left. Put out half truths or out right lies and claim somebody on the right did something. Idiotic distortions like this waste time and do nothing to advance the real issue. It just infuriates people and makes it impossible to have a reasonable discussion's.

Guns, immigration show cultural chasm
www.nationalreview.com/2018/02/changing-stances-guns-immigration-refle

Bernie Sanders is an intriguing example of how political and cultural currents swirl around us. He won his first bid for Congress in 1990 in part because he received the full-throated endorsement of the National Rifle Association. Sanders, the former mayor of Burlington, Vermont, was noncommittal on an assault-weapons ban while his GOP opponent, Peter Smith, flip-flopped and came out in favor of a ban.

“It is not about Peter Smith vs. Bernie Sanders,” the NRA's Wayne LaPierre explained. “It is about integrity in politics.”

This history was just one reason why it was amusing to listen to LaPierre at the Conservative Political Action Conference last week railing against the “socialists” determined to grab everyone's guns. The man who helped launch Bernie Sanders, the most prominent American socialist, suddenly thinks socialism is an existential threat to liberty.

What's going on?

On the immigration front: Democrats are increasingly invested in permissive policies in large part because they've bought into the theory that diverse populations are their key to electoral victories going forward. In dialectic fashion, Republicans are increasingly invested in restrictive policies in large part because they're chasing after ever-larger segments of the white vote.

As for firearms: Democrats passed an assault-weapons ban in September 1994. Even Bill Clinton credited that decision as one of the chief reasons the GOP took back the House two months later.

True or not, the more important consequence was that gun rights increasingly became a partisan issue, and the NRA had little choice but to become an adjunct of the GOP. The dynamic became centrifugal, with Democrats and Republicans becoming ever more defined by the issue.

All of these changes were driven by facts on the ground. To listen to Democrats, Republicans support gun rights because the NRA tells them to. In reality, Republicans support gun rights because their voters tell them to, just as Democratic voters tell their representatives the opposite.

But guns and immigration are not simply drivers of polarization, they are examples of its power. Politics has become a lifestyle, part of the “Big Sort” driving so much in our culture. That's why the NRA's marketing these days has so little to do with gun policy and so much to do with cultural resentments.

These days, if you're a Democrat, you're likely to be a down-the-line Democrat on a host of unrelated issues. Same if you're a Republican. Like our representatives, many of us won't buck party orthodoxy on any matter of importance.

Liberals such as Sanders have talked about “two Americas” for generations, but they worked on the assumption that this divide was class-based. It's not. It's cultural, and the divide is becoming a chasm.

Read a history book. The "freedom" that you and I enjoy at one time required a lot of killing. Call me a pessimist, but I don't believe that is set in stone forever. Neither did the people who wrote what GWB called "That Goddamned Piece of Paper".

Obviously, if you are an incompetent shooter when under pressure, all you purchased is "wounding" or "missing" your targeted kill, human or deer. The AR-15 was never engineered to bring "freedom" and "protection". It is plainly only about "killing".

I have a handgun that I've owned for over 7-8 years and never fired. I could walk into an office and get my conceal and carry today and walked strapped almost wherever I go in the state. I chose not to because I'm not an idiot.

It's sad that idiots have to ruin it for the rest of us.

Trump had Democrats cheering in his bipartisan gun control meeting.
www.vox.com/2018/2/28/17064120/trump-gun-control-meeting-congress-expl
ained

“You’re scared of the NRA,” President Donald Trump declared in a room of lawmakers Wednesday during a meeting on guns that pushed Republican priorities to the sidelines and had Democrats in the room cheering.

A bipartisan group of legislators met in the White House to try to make headway on gun law reforms in the wake of the deadly shooting at a Parkland, Florida, high school that left 17 dead and injured more than a dozen others.

Throughout the hour, Trump often veered into uncomfortable territory for Republicans and at times broke with his party altogether, reiterating support for policies many in his conservative base have taken issue with.

At one point, he said some in the group were “petrified” of the national gun lobby and sided with Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein (CA) and Amy Klobuchar’s (MN) proposals over those of Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Rep. John Rutherford (R-FL).

In the televised meeting, which felt a lot like the freewheeling discussion Trump held on immigration last month, the president called for a bill that was “powerful” on background checks and that would address mental illness and possibly raise the age limit for buying assault rifles from 18 years old to 21. He also repeatedly stated support for beefing up armed security at schools and getting rid of “gun-free zones.”

In all, it was an undeniable call for comprehensive gun control — something Republicans have been wary of touching.

“I like that word, comprehensive,” Trump said. “They say it is a bad word. I like the word. I would rather have a comprehensive bill. ... It would be really nice to create something that’s beautiful.”

Whether this discussion will actually yield legislation — and whether Trump sticks to the positions he supported in the meeting — remains to be seen.

Only last month, many of these same lawmakers listened to Trump publicly support compromise immigration legislation, only to have his administration derail every bipartisan proposal put forward. Trump said he wants to be the president that gets gun reform passed through Congress. It’s not yet clear if that will translate into helping Congress pass a bill.

I think the Civil War was fought over money.
Quote:

By 1860, there were more millionaires (slaveholders all) living in the lower Mississippi Valley than anywhere else in the United States. In the same year, the nearly 4 million American slaves were worth some $3.5 billion, making them the largest single financial asset in the entire U.S. economy, worth more than all manufacturing and railroads combined.
Unlike the British Parliament, the American Congress was too cheap and stingy to buy the slaves. And then who would do the work if there were no slaves? The Cotton Planters sure didn't want to pay their field hands a living wage. The century after the Civil War proved they didn't want to pay blacks more than the very minimum to keep them alive. Antebellum Southerners much rather preferred shooting a Yankee in glorious war than working in their own dusty fields picking cotton that made the South wealthy.

The NRA was right: the president really does want to take away your guns. But it’s President Trump, not President Obama, who wants to do it.

And he wants to do it without bothering about due process. In a single sentence, he’s managed to alienate both conservatives and liberals. There’s literally no one who supports this idea. This is the craziest shit we’ve seen from Trump since—oh, a few days ago, I suppose. The problem—aside from Trump being Trump—is that he has no one to consult about what kind of proposal might have a chance to gain Republican support if he pushes hard enough. That’s because there’s probably no one in the White House who supports even the tiniest shred of gun safety legislation. So Trump is on his own, causing chaos for his own party and guaranteeing that nothing will get done.

Speaking to NBC News by phone from his hospital room at Heart Hospital of Northwest Texas, Garces, 54, said that he was admitted to the emergency room on Monday with a blood clot in his lung.

On the morning of Feb. 14 — the same day as the Florida school shooting that killed 17 kids and teachers — Garces wrestled a handgun away from a man who had entered the chapel at Faith City Mission and threatened to hold church attendees hostage."

Russian banker said he met Trump through NRA

The Russian banker under scrutiny for money transfers to the National Rifle Association said the organization helped him meet President Trump.

Alexander Torshin, a deputy head of Russia’s central bank, is one of his country's strongest supporters of the NRA, even hosting dinners for an American delegation that came to Moscow in 2015.

A report earlier this year said federal investigators were looking into whether his payments to the group were funneled towards Trump’s election as part of what Fusion GPS investigator Glenn Simpson said was a “very concerted effort” by Russian officials to get in with the gun lobby

The RAND Corp has credibility. A new, huge review of gun research has bad news for the NRA.

On the gun control front, there’s moderate evidence that background checks reduce suicide and violent crime, limited evidence that prohibitions associated with mental illness reduce suicide, moderate evidence that those prohibitions reduce violent crime, and supportive evidence that child-access prevention laws reduce suicides and unintentional injuries and deaths.

Meanwhile, there’s limited evidence that concealed carry laws increase violent crime and unintentional injuries and deaths. And there’s moderate evidence that “stand your ground” laws — NRA-backed measures that expand when someone can use a gun or other weapons to defend himself — increase violent crime.

If you put this all together, it suggests that restrictive laws seem to lead to fewer gun deaths, while the permissive laws seem to lead to more gun deaths.

That’s not enough for nonpartisan researchers at RAND to make sweeping conclusions, but it’s certainly suggestive — particularly for policymakers interested in finding solutions to America’s gun violence problem.

AURaptor, there have been 850,000 gun deaths, but it would take only about 850 more deaths to prove you wrong. If 50 gunmen killed 17 students in each of the 50 states over the next 12 months for a total of 850 dead, I think Trump and the Republicans in Congress could be motivated to change their minds about guns. The massacres would have to be no fewer nor more than one per week or else those Republicans, with their very weak memories, would forget it was happening. Since 700 are dead per week, 17 more is not that big of an increase, but it sure would make a difference if it was happening in a weekly school massacre. But what happens for Christmas and New Years when the schools are closed? The massacre moves to the multi-cinema and continues motivating our elected representatives in government to solve this problem.

It Took the NRA One Day to Crush President Trump’s Gun Reforms

At a televised meeting on Wednesday with lawmakers, Mr. Trump had endorsed a Senate proposal to significantly expand background checks on gun sales and said he wanted to see sales of some firearms restricted to people who were 21 or older. He also suggested some guns be taken away from people without due process. All of these stances run counter to the positions of the NRA, the nation’s largest gun-rights organization.

On Thursday night Trump met with the NRA. So what was announced Friday?

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Friday morning Mr. Trump now considers a federal increase in the minimum age as likely unrealistic….On background checks, Ms. Sanders dialed back the president’s stance. He is seeking “not necessarily universal background checks, but certainly improving the background-check system. He wants to see what that legislation, the final piece of it looks like,” she said.

That didn’t take long for Trump to flipflop.

U.S. media outlets ran more than 7,900 stories online about the Parkland shooting, 17 dead, in the two weeks after the shooting.

That compares with nearly 2,600 stories about the Sutherland Springs shooting, 26 dead, about 4,200 stories on the Las Vegas shooting, 58 dead, and nearly 4,500 stories about the San Bernardino shooting, 14 dead, all in a period of two weeks.

The only shooting that showed more online stories in the subsequent two weeks was Orlando at 8,097 and 49 dead.

In the wake of the Parkland shooting, there has been more coverage focusing on policy discussions compared with the shooting in Las Vegas, in which 58 people were killed. While there was some discussion over outlawing “bump stock” devices after Las Vegas, there was much less talk of an assault-weapons ban or other solutions-oriented discussions.

AURaptor, imagine River holding a knife instead of a bent stick. Or better yet, imagine if Superman gathered all firearms and dropped them into the sun. I think knife stabbing deaths will NOT increase by 11,000 per year to compensate for the decrease in gun deaths. Americans are squeamish and there aren’t that many that would knife their victims in the style of The Operative. But the only way to find out what American murderers will actually do is to have fewer shootings and see if knifing increases to match decreased shootings.

AURaptor, while you are at it, why not pass a law requiring the Federal Government to cure cancer, heart attack and stroke within the next 75 years? The Federally funded medical research effort would cost less than the $15 Trillion spent on nukes, missile-subs, missiles, and bombers over the previous 75 years and there be more to show for all the money spent. When was the last time Moscow was nuked? Never. When was the last time 1,000 Americans died of a cancer? Last week. That's what I mean by having something to show for all the money spent.

Still don't care. 2nd Amendment isn't going anywhere.

The actual reason for the 2nd Amendment vanished when slavery vanished. To make a long story short, some famous slave-owning Southerners from the history books demanded a 2nd Amendment to prevent Northerners from freeing Southern slaves by taking away the guns of the Slave Patrols, also known as Militias.
www.truth-out.org/news/item/13890-the-second-amendment-was-ratified-to
-preserve-slavery

The Second Amendment has an odd word choice, but for a very practical reason for the time it was passed: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." It says "State" instead of "United States"or "Country" (the framers knew the difference -- see the 10th Amendment "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." )

The real reason the Second Amendment was ratified was to preserve the slave patrol militias in the southern states, which was necessary to get Virginia's vote. Founders Patrick Henry, George Mason and James Madison were totally clear on that, and we all should be too.

In the beginning, there were the militias. In the South, they were also called the "slave patrols," and they were regulated by the states.

In Georgia, for example, a generation before the American Revolution, laws were passed in 1755 and 1757 that required all plantation owners or their male white employees to be members of the Georgia Militia, and for those armed militia members to make monthly inspections of the quarters of all slaves in the state. The law defined which counties had which armed militias and even required armed militia members to keep a keen eye out for slaves who may be planning uprisings.

The Georgia statutes required patrols, under the direction of commissioned militia officers, to examine every plantation each month and authorized them to search 'all Negro Houses for offensive Weapons and Ammunition'.

It's the answer to the question raised by the character played by Leonardo DiCaprio in Django Unchained when he asks, "Why don't they just rise up and kill the whites?" If the movie were real, it would have been a purely rhetorical question, because every southerner of the era knew the simple answer: Well regulated militias kept the slaves in chains.

If there was not a 2nd Amendment, the anti-slavery folks in the North could disband those southern militias. And, similarly, if the North were to invite into military service the slaves of the South, then they could be emancipated, which would collapse the institution of slavery, and the southern economic and social systems, altogether.

These two possibilities worried southerners like James Monroe, George Mason (who owned more than 300 slaves

Fairytale about southern slave owners & the 2nd Amendment

* was slavery and the potential for violence rebellion a consideration? Sure, that was the real world in which the founders lived. A system which existed long before they considered breaking away from the crown. It was unreasonable for them to consider solving every major problem they faced at once. Their main concern in forming a new nation was to separate itself from the old world, and to form a government which best protected the freedoms of its citizens.

I'm not wrong on the # of gun deaths being 1/2 or more comprised of suicides.

"Tony Garces was still reeling from his injuries on Tuesday, nearly two weeks after he disarmed a possible church shooter in Amarillo, Texas — and was then shot by police.

Before the Bill of Rights was added, AURaptor, there was substantial opposition to the new Constitution because it moved the power to arm the state militias from the states to the federal government. This created a fear that the federal government, by neglecting the upkeep of the militia, could have overwhelming military force at its disposal through its power to maintain a standing army and navy, leading to a confrontation with the states, even a military takeover of a state. That is no Fairytale, AURaptor.

Technology moved on in the last 200 years, AURaptor, and the Federal government could take down a whole state, even if all the state's citizens had both an AR-15 and a black powder flintlock rifle to "defend freedom" against Washington DC. The 2nd Amendment, as it was written, does not give you the right to radar controlled anti-aircraft guns, which are the guns you'd need to take on the Federal Government in the 21st Century. Maybe James Monroe should have mentioned anti-aircraft weapons and shoulder launched Stinger missiles in the 2nd amendment for the defense of freedom?

The Baker Act in Florida empowers 4 Categories of officials to remove weapons and/or hold people. Police are one of those. And the Community Activist Sheriff Israel did intentionally refuse to act, instead negotiating a "no arrest" contract with the school.

I will swerve the discussion a little more with this declaration: Republicans are really comfortable about murdering people. That declaration seems a little extreme, doesn't it? Do I have a pile of dead bodies to justify that Republicans are comfortable with murder? Actually, all I have is a pile of words:

Why Does Sen. Lindsey Graham Think Killing Millions of Koreans Would Be “Worth It”?
https://theintercept.com/2018/03/06/why-do-u-s-politicians-think-killi
ng-millions-of-koreans-would-be-worth-it
/

“All the damage that would come from a war [with North Korea] would be worth it in terms of long-term stability and national security,” Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said in an interview with CNN last week.

What would that “damage” look like? Whether nuclear or non-nuclear, multiple studies and surveys of experts suggest millions of innocent North Koreans, South Koreans, and Japanese could be killed in such a conflict, making the wars in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan look like minor skirmishes in comparison.

Top U.S. officials seem to agree. Listen to Defense Secretary James Mattis, speaking to CBS News in May 2017: “A conflict in North Korea … would be probably the worst kind of fighting in most people’s lifetimes.”

Listen to Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, speaking at the Aspen Security Forum in July 2017: “It would be a loss of life unlike any we have experienced in our lifetimes. Anyone who has been alive since World War II has never seen the loss of life that could occur if there’s a conflict on the Korean peninsula.”

Yet Graham, a former Air Force colonel and self-styled GOP “moderate,” thinks this unprecedented “loss of life” — millions of innocent men, women, and children shot, bombed, burned, starved, and gassed to death — would be “worth it.”

*****

It is easy to understand why Republicans are not worried about a few thousand Americans being murdered per year with guns. Republicans are not worried about murdering Koreans by the millions, which makes a few thousand Americans shot dead by guns per year seem like it is no big deal.

Luckily, the Koreans are not dead, yet. It is only a potential pile of dead bodies. The article does mention that Democrats have their own very real pile of dead bodies that they were comfortable about killing, which means there are a few blood-thirsty Democrats worse than the typical Republican. It is nothing to be proud of.

That's not really gun laws man... and it's not really something to celebrate.

Around $60 million of that $400 million is going to go to psych evaluations and firearms training for part time teachers and coaches. It also allows ROTCs to handle firearms inside of schools. For some reason, the only full time teachers that will be able to carry firearms are those with previous military service. These individuals aren't being forced to carry a firearm. It is an opt-in program at every level.

You should actually read where that $400 million is going to go.

This is not something to celebrate from where I stand.

Senate bill to toughen gun background checks now filibuster-proof

March 9 (UPI) -- A bipartisan Senate bill to toughen background checks for gun purchases has enough support to bypass a potential filibuster, Texas Sen. John Cornyn said Friday.

Cornyn's office said six more Democratic senators have signed on as co-sponsors, bringing the total to 62 -- over the threshold avert a filibuster.

The bill, called the Fix NICS Act, improves the National Instant Background Check System and ensures that authorities report all criminal records to a central database.

In Move That Surprises No One, Trump Caves In to NRA

This is such a shocker:

The White House on Sunday vowed to help provide “rigorous firearms training” to some schoolteachers and formally endorsed a bill to tighten the federal background checks system, but it backed off President Trump’s earlier call to raise the minimum age to purchase some guns to 21 years old from 18 years old.

….The Trump plan does not include substantial changes to gun laws….Rather, the president is establishing a Federal Commission on School Safety, to be chaired by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

….The White House plan released Sunday does not address the minimum age for gun purchases. Pressed by reporters about the apparent backtracking, a senior administration official said the age issue was “a state-based discussion right now” and would be explored by DeVos’s commission.

Who could have guessed that Trump would cave in to the NRA after all his tough talk? That is, other than everyone?

….The Trump plan does not include substantial changes to gun laws….Rather, the president is establishing a Federal Commission on School Safety, to be chaired by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

….The White House plan released Sunday does not address the minimum age for gun purchases. Pressed by reporters about the apparent backtracking, a senior administration official said the age issue was “a state-based discussion right now” and would be explored by DeVos’s commission.

Who could have guessed that Trump would cave in to the NRA after all his tough talk? That is, other than everyone?

Yep - like a swiss watch. That's what a $30 million NRA contribution will get you.
Time to show we can make sensible changes without Trump - obviously we can't look to him for anything but sound bites and tweets.

https://momsdemandaction.org

https://everytown.org/throwthemout/

Again, I suggest listening to Preet Baharara's podcast, the one with Shannon Watts (I've listened to 3 so far - all good - "Sanity for the Masses" I'd call it).

The Red Flag law is simple common sense and Watts & Co. are working state by state to have it become part of each state's sensible gun laws.

http://wapo.st/2p7BG1P

"SINCE LAST month’s high school massacre in Parkland, Fla., attention has focused on lapses by the FBI, which failed to act on tips that the alleged shooter, Nikolas Cruz, posed an imminent danger. It’s also the case that neighbors, teachers, classmates, acquaintances and local authorities were aware that Mr. Cruz was armed and potentially dangerous, a fact that President Trump noted the day after the killing spree. “Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!” he tweeted.

What the president failed to mention is that state law in Florida, as in all but a handful of states, provides no legal procedure that would have allowed people close to Mr. Cruz, or even law enforcement, to ask a court to order the immediate confiscation of his weapons — even if they presented alarming evidence. As Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel told the Miami Herald, “We can’t arrest for something a person is thinking about.”

In fact, whether or not Congress adds muscle to gun laws — and it should, by banning military-style weapons, enacting universal background checks and raising the minimum age of firearms purchase to 21 — states need not be impotent in the face of credible threats. Five states — California, Connecticut, Indiana, Washington and Oregon — have enacted “red-flag” laws that empower relatives and close friends, as well as law enforcement officers, to ask judges to issue “gun violence restraining orders.” Had such a recourse been available in Florida, it’s possible that the Parkland rampage could have been averted."

Of course, raising the age of legal purchase for all guns from 18 to 21 would be huge (25 even better).

"People under 25 are responsible for a disproportionate amount of America’s gun violence. According to data collected by the FBI, nearly 50 percent of all gun homicides are committed by people younger than 25. Most of those perpetrators are 18 to 24."

How about posting specifics - then I can address your concerns specifically.
A quick read of The Baker Act makes it look like it could have been used - so why wasn't it? Law enforcement negligence? It didn't meet all the criteria? It was for only 72 hours? He was already seeing a Dr.?

Btw - the Baker Act looks like a watered down Red Flag law, so it would be acceptable in Florida, right?

This year looks to be about on track with 2015 and 2017.

Sadly, but expectedly, Trump is courting his base.

So anyway ... anyone up for a rational, fact-based, and civil discussion about the topic?

For some reason, the only full time teachers that will be able to carry firearms are those with previous military service. These individuals aren't being forced to carry a firearm. It is an opt-in program at every level.

You should actually read where that $400 million is going to go.

Today in Maryland, teen Austin Rollins shot at others in Great Mills High School.

Why has this not been blasted throughout the day by MSM? What part does not fit the Libtard narrative?
Because it was stopped when School Resource Officer, Deputy Blaine Gaskill, engaged and shot Rollins. Rollins did not shoot anybody else, because he was too busy firing a shot at Deputy Gaskill.

We spend a lot of time and money making "safe spaces" at colleges for grown adults who have been babied all of their lives from bullies, but we can't make school actual safe spaces from bullets?

We don't need guns in schools, period. We didn't need them in the 90's and we don't' need them now. We need to ask ourselves what is different about society today and how to fix it.

It's not right for kids to have to grow up in schools where they know their teachers are armed. That's fucked. Once that goes on for a while it won't be long before we end up having jobs where the management is armed. Grown ass adults trying to do their jobs and having to deal with management that is calling the shots under the threat of having a gun.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Well now. Having management being Veterans. That is something I haven't heard mentioned before. Could be a step to improve society, along the lines of Heinlein.

One part of the story also absent was how the School Resource Officer was not an Untrainable Teacher. 14-year-olds and younger can be trained to accurately shoot and handle a weapon, but Untrainable Teachers proclaim they cannot latch on to the learning curve of children.

This is my main problem with arming school teachers.

Adults today would not stand for having their management armed. Period. It would NEVER happen. But what about the kids?

It's bad enough that we already have armed guards in schools. The kids today will grow up and not really have a problem with armed guards all over their worksites since they were conditioned for it at a very young age. We're already seeing a slow transition to this being the case in the more sensitive areas of the workforce, and some not so sensitive. I've gone into a grocery store at night where an armed guard is on duty at night.

Now consider what happens when kids grow up and their teachers are all armed. Those kids are going to be conditioned to think it's normal for their "superiors" to have guns, and likely won't even bat an eye when they go to work and the memo comes that the management at their job is going to be armed. Hell... the weaker among them might even be clamoring for it.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Had not heard of Heinlein being a communist. Around 1935 he was an anti-Communist Democratic Activist. He described himself as Libertarian, or extreme Libertarian. Descriptions of him as Conservative are from Liberals.
He was involved in the early stages of Naval Aviation. He graduated the Naval Academy.
His brother became Major General in National Guard.

One tennent he used, including in Starship Troopers, was earned Citizenship. Citizenship was earned by serving in the military. So that might be where your comprehension fell apart. Only Citizens could vote, or carry weapons, and these Rights were cherished.

The other part is that you are looking at a small corner of the picture, instead of the whole tapestry, like you did with taxes.
Forget your interpretation of giving guns to all of the degenerate drug-addled idiots that you have known as managers.
Replace your prior managers with only people who have served, sacrificed years of their lives in a contract, are competent as nd capable of decision making. Not only would your employment experience have changed, but society would change as well.
