Let me just point out that the author left out vital relevant facts in the opinion piece. Doing that is known as cherry-picking. And whether you do that in the news, in discussion, in debate or in opinion, when you distort the facts, you've changed the nature of your communication into propaganda. But WE don't have any of THAT in the US, do we?!

As I understand it, the NRA's position is that it's people with guns who are the problem, not the guns themselves. Given that the NRA sees the problem as the wrong people getting guns, what is its solution for the problem as they frame it?

He did NOT have an assault weapon, an assault weapon can fire a full automatic. They are illegal to own without a special permit.

At this late hour, the news is that it turns out he's just another loner-nutjob who was possibly a gay-leaning homo-phobe who couldn't deal with that fact. It reminded me of American Beauty; a homo-phobe who actually was attracted to men.
Plus the fact that he obsessed with lying about his "terror" connections. He professed his loyalty to several jihadists groups; some that were ideological opposed to others. All his claims, after 10 months of investigation by the FBI,
turned out to be false. He was an American born nut case, period. He was taken off the "watch" list, hence he was legally able to buy a high-powered rifle.
And so our "absolute" second amendment rights are slowly getting us killed. Ban military combat-style guns for public consumption. Anyone on the No Fly list should automatically be placed on the No-Buy List, period. Anyone with mental issues -
a.k.a "nut-cases" should be on the No-Buy List, period. Anyone objecting to that
common sense law could sue the government and have your day in court to prove you
should be allowed to have a gun, period.
This nation was built on laws, let us proceed in that manner.

I just heard this myself. He had gay dating apps on his phone and frequented the night club. Could have been reconnaissance, but his ex-wife thinks he really is gay. Also supposedly he wasn't all that religious, but apparently his upbringing was still just enough to create some massive cognitive dissonance and reaction formation on his part.
Self-hating gay guy who happened to be Muslim. Even appeared to claim allegiance to a bunch of different entirely conflicting terrorist groups that are at odds with each other, because he thought being a terrorist is better than being gay. Pretty sad all around, especially for the victims.
Also supposedly people tried to hush up the ex-wife about him being gay. So that leaves me to wonder just how this is being politicized.

I probably should emphasize that it is not wise to sell mass-murder tool kits to just anybody with the money. But opinions differ on that subject.
And when it finally becomes possible to build laser powered hand weapons and light-sabers, it also won't be wise to sell those, or the batteries, to just anybody with the money.
