I thought it was cute how the old man was cleaning the legs of the spider, and not only didn't the spider try to run away but it eventually was offering its legs up to have them cleaned off.
Kind of reminded me of the story of the Lion and the Mouse.
It doesn't sound like you're arachnophobic though, and you've just got a healthy aversion to spiders which is good.
I'm not aware of any poisonous ones that live that far north, but if you're ever in doubt you could google it. I lived in my grandma's basement for 6 years at one point, so I know all about it. I always let the spiders live because unlike some other basement dwelling bugs they didn't bother me psychologically.
I find millipedes and earwigs to be terrifying, for example. I'm not sure why the millipedes bother me so much, but I know the earwigs bother me because of an especially creepy rerun of Night Gallery I saw when I was an impressionable youth. If you can get over the aversion of spiders, they'll be the only critters down there with you until you get out of there.

Regarding spiders, have you all tried Hedgeballs? They're cheap.

You are right. I am not afraid of them, just as you said have an aversion to them.
There are also silver fish in this place. They like the bathroom.
Haven't seen millipedes around here or earwigs.
Moths come in when I open the door and of course spiders find their ways in because of the cracks and holes and things coming apart.

Told someone about the spiders and they mentioned wolf spiders which apparently bite. Not sure about them. Would have to look them up.

Should be no worries of Brown Recluse spiders up by Brenda.
I seriously doubt that any other spiders up there would be harmful to humans.
Wolf Spiders can bite, but I think you'd really have to go out of your way to get a bite by one. I can step right by one, or even put my fingers right by it and it will barely move away from me, and it never lunges to attack. Unlike a brown recluse that might take up residence in a pair of shoes, or a pile of clothes on the floor, the wolf spiders like to be out in the open to stalk their prey. Even if you do get bit by a Wolf Spider, you'll just get an irritating bump that will go away on its own.
Interestingly, the Brown Recluse is not nearly as dangerous as the urban legends say they are either. Only 10% of people would react with some form of necrosis after the bite around the region, and only 1% of people could have a systematic shutdown from the bite. More importantly though, the fangs of the Brown Recluse are so small that it couldn't even puncture your skin if it were just crawling on top of you. It needs the force of being up against your skin with tight clothing or inside your shoe to generate the force necessary to bite you.

Congrats on the mammogram, BRENDA, and happy belated birthday! It seems like lately every time I get a mammogram they find "something" which leads to more and more testing.
Hey, KIKI, we people in the flatlands of LA finally got some rain! There was a LOT of lightning, altho most of it must have been pretty far away since we never heard the thunder. Dear daughter and I were taking the dog for a round-the-block walk around 7:30 lat night when the light show came on, so we boogied back home pretty fast. I think I saw more lightning flashes last night than I have in ten years. Some places got drenched; we got about 0.1" so far.
SIX, thanks for the info on wolf spiders. I think I've been killing them because I thought they were brown recluse, but after your video is just HAD to look up the difference and now I know for sure what brown recluse look like. We DO have them here, some people have been bitten by brown recluse. But the spiders that we really have to look out for are black and brown widows ... I see them (and their egg-cases) around all the time.

The Wolf Spiders are your friends. Seriously. They also aren't shy about fighting any other species of spider that is around. Although they don't always win, if you've got some dangerous ones living around you then it's all the more reason to keep the Wolf's alive to duke it out with them. :)
I actually just noticed the other day that in my basement where I don't go often, there is a pile of wolf spiders and there is a big looking spider above them with a web. Not cool.
I didn't take care of her yet because I've been busy with work and I want to take a photo or maybe even a video of it before I do. Not even sure if the one that's been taking out the Wolfs are dangerous to humans, but I'm pretty sure it isn't. I don't think we really have any dangerous ones where I live. Supposedly from the maps we could have brown recluses by me, but I'm really on the outer fringes of those maps. Probably just getting lucky since she has the high ground. I'd have to imagine that she's got some sort of pheromone that attracts them as well since there are so many dead at her feet.
