The story is more than likely fake.

I'm hugely relieved. It seemed absurdly evil, and I'm so glad it's apparently not true.

Also: Bad BBC for posting the headline before fully confirming the story. Geez.

But FGM is a fake story, meant to 'discredit' ISIS.

Because they're not doing a good enough job of that on their own.

It's not confirmed, but still very believable, based on the practices of the uber religious nut jobs in charge.

I'd not be surprised if they want to implement this, but realize they don't have the ability to fully enforce it - yet.

Give them a few more months. I bet it's not so hoaxy then.

I'm not saying I don't think they are capable of immense cruelty.

But this story came out of nowhere and it is likely a hoax and we are probably all happier for it.

I do consider it fairly unlikely they would pull that move, though, since it's a cultural rather than a religious practice (i.e. why WOULD they) and it probably would erode the support they do have. Basically, this shit isn't mandated by Islam even in theory, unlike the other crap they so viciously try to enforce.

FGM is practiced in places where is has wide cultural support. In spite of some entanglement it is not actually tied to Islam, or demanded in the Koran.

I just really don't see why they would do that. I don't expect them to.

ISIS Torches 1800-Year-Old Mosul Church After Expelling Christians

Then, matters got worse. From the Daily Beast:

Friday at noon was the deadline for Christian families to meet ISIS’s demands:

Convert to Islam, pay an anachronistic Islamic tax for non-Muslims known as jizya, leave Mosul, or be killed. But the day before the final exodus, Christians were informed jizya was no longer an option. The order came to convert, leave, or die.

On the way out of town last week, the final 1500 families of Mosul's Christian population were reportedly robbed at ISIS checkpoints. And following Friday's deadline, ISIS reportedly set fire to a 1800-year-old church.
