That's the insidious thing about (white) privilege. As a beneficiary, unless you make an effort to find out, you don't even have to be aware that it exists. Because the lack of equality exists only outside your experience.

When you're blind to that privilege, you're more likely to act defensively toward people who complain about it. You literally don't know what they are talking about.

Beautifully said, Rouka, and absolutely right on. Of COURSE some don't think racism still exists, because it doesn't affect THEM.

Sig: "even "sounding black" over the phone was enough to stop a rental". I'll go one better, with the same experience I described here before. My supervisor friend at the last law firm I worked for, who moved here from New York. One beautiful, smart, funny, well-spoken woman, looking for an apartment in S.F. Over the phone, she and the landlord discovered they had a whole lot of things in common, landlord really excited to meet her and have her as a tenant. She arrives, gets out of her car, landlord opens the door as she walks up the steps, and she saw the change on the landlord's face and knew what was coming. By the time she got to the door, landlord makes embarrassed explanations, apartment already rented, etc. They both understood perfectly.

Racism still exists; to deny it is ridiculous.

White privelege ?

Nonsense. That's pure code for racism, straight up. Racism against whites.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

Not to mention neighborhood covenants, and bank lending practices, which serve to keep ethnic minorities in lower income neighborhoods with poorer schools and less opportunity.

Or the anti-Mexican fear mongering... Or the anti-Muslim fearmongering... All of which tend to be associated with various forms of harrassment.

And then there's the stop and frisk policies in New York City, which have been confirmed to target blacks, as well as continuing focus on highway and traffic stops when the driver is black.

Couple this with a justice system that tends to put poorer income people (often ethnic minorities) at a disadvantage, and you end up with a third of all adult black males in the US are currently in prison, most on minor drug charges. And you have the threat of deportation or detainment for latinos and muslims.

The ramifications of these problems are enormous, and difficult for many of these communities to overcome. Not just livelyhood, but also the sense of family, education, and the ability to grow up well. This system is far from equal still.

If I had a wish that could be granted, I wouldn't waste it on rappy, but I'd certainly think about wishing he'd wake up black.

You dismissing my POV out of hand, simply because I refuse to blindly buy into your warped position doesn't equate to " Q.E.D "

Sorry, you make a false statement, I'm going to disagree.

Deal w/ it.

* It's like trying to defend the baseless claim that conservatives ONLY reject Obama and his policies because of the color of his skin. Nothing could be further from the truth, but nothing will convince those who believe that it's "RACISM" , and not politics.

Golly gee, I keep missing things. Who is it here that said "that conservatives ONLY reject Obama and his policies because of the color of his skin"? I missed that one completely. All I've ever seen is people saying that Republicans have found racism a really useful tool to fight against Obama and the Dems by effectively appealing to the racism (and fear that's at its base) that already exists in this country ...you know, politics....

Or is Rap once again "reading" things which were never there?

Niki - the caveat in your little fairy tale is that it limits such things to " in here ". Sorry, there's a large world beyond this little forum, and many times over, I've heard Obamabots exclaim exactly that. If anyone doesn't agree w/ Obama, it's because of his race.

Oprah Winfrey ring a bell ?

"Probably it's crossed my mind more times than it's crossed your mind," she said. "I think that there is a level of disrespect for the office that occurs. And that occurs in some cases and maybe even many cases because he is African American. There's no question about that and it's the kind of thing nobody ever says but everybody's thinking it."

So, pardon my lack of clarification for you, but I don't always speak ONLY about what I see going on " here ".
