The Republican National Committee has clarified a tweet that erroneously declared racism over.
The original message, published on Sunday, was meant to commemorate the 58th anniversary of Rosa Parks' arrest for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man. Instead, it suggested that the civil rights movement Parks was part of ultimately ended racism.
The original tweet: "Today we remember Rosa Parks’ bold stand and her role in ending racism."
The tweet — which included (the above) quote from Parks — did not sit well with many Twitter users, who responded with a mix of snark and sarcasm:
"Oh racism ended. Thanks for the update!"
"...ending racism." Not."
"Seriously?“
"RACISM IS OVER?! *ENTERS BASS PRO SHOP TO SEE IF IT'S TRUE*"
"Why is this upsetting people? Racism IS over; I've never suffered from it in my life."
"GOP It's ok, we don't need you winning an election anytime soon anyway. Keep up the thoughtful tweets."
The RNC clarified its tweet several hours later, though it did not delete the original:Quote:

One could kindly interpret it to mean that the process of "ending" is still on-going.
Good public relations shouldn't require kindly interpretations, though. It's an incredible invitation for mockery.

So blacks still have to sit in the back of the bus? And they can't use the same restrooms and water fountains as whites? Or the same restaurants and hotels? or go to the same schools?
Ms. Parks, and the Greensboro lunch counter sit-ins, and the Freedom Riders, and many other folks ended institutional racism - the racism ingrained in law and custom - in the U.S.
Some individuals will be racists as long as there are racial differences, but the courage of Ms. Parks and many others removed racism from the laws of the land.
Strange that you can't acknowledge this.

Perhaps your tendency to overly sweeping statements is what got your argument in trouble. The racism ingrained in law - when color is spelled out specifically - may be over. The racism ingrained in law that uses other markers - like the modern day poll tax - aka voter ID - is not. Even less firmly in the past is the racism ingrained in custom.

I'm old enough to have seen bathrooms and water fountains labeled "Black" and "White", and to have gone to segregated schools. The makeup of the groups of kids I see walking home from school today, and the diversity of folks in my neighborhood, tells me that those days are past.
I'm sure that there are racists in the U.S., but their power has waned to the point where they are figures of embarrassment rather than the figures of fear they were for so many years.
I understand that some folks have to keep the racist America stereotype up so they can paint folks who don't agree with them as racist, but that's more politics than reality.

One need only look at the GOP and listen to their bullshit babble for fifteen minutes to know this issue is far, far from over.
Of course, if they *HAD* anything to offer minorities it'd be a different story, but these days it's all they can do to trot out a few offensively stereotypical uncle toms doing the old negro shuffle, like Herman Cain, and seriously, that was just downright embarassing.
Me, I favor simply IGNORING race instead of making it a factor whatever, but alas no one else seems on board with that notion.
