So, until last night, I'd never watched Angel, because I wanted to start at the beginning, and they hadn't started showing them on FX yet. So, I managed to get a friend of a friend to make me copies of his tapes for Seasons 1-3. I haven't gotten that far into them yet, so I don't really know that much about the seperate Angel mythos yet. I thought about posting this to the Angel board, but it's really more about Buffy... so here goes.
I just watched "I will remember you" from Angel Season 1, the one where Angel is made mortal. And That one day... that perfect day where he was human and the curse was lifted... all I can say is it's a good thing Buffy was made to forget that day. She would really never have gotten over it then.
I look at Buffy's love life and it fills me with dread about my own. What happens if there really is one perfect match for you... one soul mate... and no matter what, it doesn't work out? Do you just go through the motions with someone else like she did with Riley? Do you go for frivolous affairs, like she did with Spike? Or do you just stay single for all time?
Sometimes the Buffyverse is so depressing it hurts, not just because of what's happening to the characters, because obviously that's not real. Demons and Gods and Vampires, oh my! But the underlying themes are so sad sometimes. Like will she ever get over Angel and be able to move on and have a healthy relationship with someone else? Do people ever really get over losing the love of their lives?
Ok, with that cheerful thought, I'm off to sing sad songs and cry into a beer. I feel like I should write country songs after this episode. Anyone else?

This isn't some fairy tale. When I kiss you, you don't wake up from a deep sleep and live happily ever after.

Well, if you want to look at it logically...
You are bound to have at least one perfect genetic match out of all of the billions of people on Earth. Perhaps there are more for different evolutionary purposes, seeing as perfect is a rather subjective word there could be countless matches that fit your genetic patterns.
So, be optimistic. If you don't believe in soul mates, believe in genetic mates, because they are out there. Probably a lot of them.

Opinion is divided on this. There are those that believe Buffy and Angel are the love of each other's lives. And there are those who think it was First Love - that first, intense, the-world-will-end-if-I-can't-have-him/her thing that people in their teens go through. I think it's the later.
I don't think Buffy's problem is that she never got over Angel. I think Buffy's problem is that everyone she loves dies, leaves or is put in mortal danger on a regular basis. She finds it hard to love because of who she is and what she's been through.
In the ep you're talking about she was still not over him but by now I think maybe she is. I think he'll always be something special because he was first love - but I don't think she's missed the one true love of her life. If such a thing exists.
Oh - is this a bad time to mention I hated I Will Remember You?
