Just a brief comment. If a thread is started which acknowledges the passing of someone, is it too much to ask that comments show some respect for that person, or not be made at all ?

And why does anyone feel the need for adding irrelevant remarks like " I'll celebrate the death of ... " , when the thread is clearly about someone who had just passed?

Why sully a thread about 1 individual with gleeful hopes for someone else dying ?

Seriously, how about showing a modicum of respect.

^ This is coming from the guy who said that Congressman Jack Murtha should be "put down like a rabid dog".

Do you show the same respect to EVERYONE who passes, or just to conservatives?

How much respect did you show for the passing of Hugo Chavez?

About this much:

And believe it or not, the way you felt about Maggie, some people felt about Hugo. You had no problem pissing all over their feelings, but now you've got your diaper in a bunch because I couldn't give two fucks about Maggie's death and I'm not all weepy and heartbroken about it. She hurt a lot of people, and now she's gone.

One person said she's been in hell less than a day, and already she's shut down three furnaces and laid off the demons working there.

My fb feed is absolutely full to bursting with Margaret Thatcher hate. I don't personally get it. She's been out of power for over 20 years! She was just an 87 year old woman who died today. What the hell?

If she were a dictator serving for life, sure, celebrate the end of her regime, but she was just ONE woman in the British government. A LONG TIME AGO. ONE elected official who was only ever as effective as her support in Parliament. I promise you, SHE, alone, was NEVER the problem.

I'll never understand how self-described liberals who supposedly oppose the values of totalitarianism, who supposedly value and comprehend parliamentarianism, nonetheless, blame duly elected heads of state for all the terrible things that happen during their administrations. Things that could never have happened without support from the actual legislative bodies in question! As if these sorry individuals literally held their entire governments at gun point.

She was only the leader of a party. And that party, its ideals and machinations, its totalitarian spirit? Still with us, folks. Not going anywhere. Meet the new witch, same as the old witch.

And Cheney and Bush, seriously? They've been replaced with upgraded models! How do those two even matter now? I suppose England and America are much better off now that all these terrible people are out of power, right??? And certainly, certainly, now that one of them died today of a stroke. I feel better already!

Hi HKC

There are people I've known, respected, and deeply cared for who've passed on. The world was a better place with them, and a far poorer place without. I'm deeply saddened by their passing. I'm curious if you consider that a valid personal response.

Maggie was on the other end as far as I'm concerned. She put a matronly face on hideous policies, and papered over the damage with jolly platitude and a cheerleading war. She, along with her political paramour Reagan, and funded by the very wealthy, engineered a massive scale political attack on the idea of government as a service to people. Many people were hurt by the policies she championed.

I'm curious - if you consider grief a valid response as in the first example - what would be the equivalent valid response as in the second, but in the opposite direction?

I think you could parse through this in a way not many other people could.

Aw, well, I don't find hate to be valid under any circumstances. Understandable in certain cases, of course. Psychologically necessary for certain individuals for brief periods of time. But it's never optimal or, in the long term, remotely healthy (I'd say 20+ years after the fact is long term).

And hate never opposes evil. Hate is evil's justification. Look what happened when America tried to use its hate to oppose terrorism! Hate is just a cover for--at the very least--inexact thinking. I suppose the valid response in the other direction you're looking for would be relief.

If anyone's saying that the world is a richer place with Thatcher dead, by all means, make the case, 'cause I don't see it.

Jeez, 1k, this subject is so disturbing to me. It just makes me so sick to see people proudly hateful, y'know what I mean?

"I suppose the valid response in the other direction you're looking for would be relief."

Interesting.

FWIW that's the exact word I had put on my response. Tho it seems kind of lame, as she hasn't been in a position to hurt anyone for many years, and never directly hurt me. And yet, I feel some relief knowing she's no longer on this earth. I find my response puzzling. Obviously I had some emotional investment left.

Yes, I'd say relief is always valid when a tyrant, or former tyrant, dies. Their myth is always one of unassailable power and one thing's for sure: when you're dead, you've been assailed.

Absolutely, I said that, because he blatantly lied about US soldiers, and for purely political reasons. But what did I say about him in the thread which mentioned his death ? C'mon, dig that one up, Kwickie.

As for Margaret Thatcher, she didn't hurt anyone or limit anyone's freedoms anywhere near to the level that Hugo did. Apples and oranges. The only folks who are really bent at her are because she showed the world the folly of socialism. bfd. Get over it.
