What might have been, plot-wise, two to seven years down the line

I wonder sometimes just where the characters and situations would have gone had the show survived--there were so many possibilities! I like to speculate, for instance, on Jayne's family. His mother sent him the hat. It is conceivable that at some point Joss would have written an episode for her, and then made her a recurring character. Just imagine the woman! I see her as cross between Granny Clampett and Patience: mean and country, with plenty of character. And certainly not afraid of Jayne.

So! What's your favorite speculation? Any interesting types of planets/moons? Any peripheral characters? Family? Let's hear your shiny ideas.

In the final episode of season 7, the Serenity crew are the new crew of a starship going to Earth, the first in centuries. That starship, called the Shepherd Book, is so huge that Serenity is part of the cargo. The comic books for Season 8 can be flashbacks to how this all came to be. Season 9 comics are about what happens when they get to Earth. You know that nothing goes smoothly.

We did a full virtual second season (based on the Serenity movie, although there's tons of other stuff), in addition to rounding out the first season with a final seven episodes at www.stillflying.net.

We had plans for seasons Three through Seven, but our ambitious exceeded our free time. :)

I suspect we can see some elements of the potential future of Firefly in Dollhouse (which shares a number of plot and character themes, and, to some extent, seems almost like a clearinghouse for ideas Joss didn't get to use).

Somewhere I speculated on this before - but I can't locate where it is. Anyway I'll try and remember:

Zoe leaves Serenity to raise her and Wash's lil boy.

Simon and Kaylee are married and having children too. Simon is now a Doctor on a smaller world. Nothing fancy, no great money, but he and Kaylee are happy. River lives on the same world in the same town and is a teacher. Her nieces idolise her.

Inara sadly died many moons ago. Even after the crew's brave attempts at having Simon treat her at the finest hospital on Persephone. (Papers were forged, diplomats bribed and politicians blackmailed etc etc). He tried in vain to cure her, and Mal hunted high and low for the specialist toxicologist who's research could have proved vital in saving her, but it was all a lost cause. It was not meant to be. Inara died before Mal could make his return...

Jayne stuck by Mal. Their association became a true friendship. After Inara's death Mal was lost for a stint. So Jayne steadied the ship. Took care of Serenity.

When a new war broke. Mal found a new resolve. He operated as a freelance soldier. Took SERENITY to the farthest parts of the 'verse. Defied the odds and perturbed the Alliance no end. Finally during the Boundary conflict Mal and Jayne met their end, or so it's believed; when they were lured to a rendezvous that proved to be an alliance ambush. Trapped but defiant Mal and Jayne held off a two hundred man alliance onslaught, that had them pinned down for two days. Last that was heard, Mal and Jayne made a last ditch effort to break free....

Nothing was ever heard from the two men again and alliance veterans who were there on the day swear blind that no man could have made it out alive. However Mal and Jayne's bodies were never found....

... And every year on the anniversary of Wash's death, Zoe receives a tiny toy Dinosaur in the post, a gesture to Zoe, which Mal had started after Wash died.

(In between all this I always had the notion that Book's past would have tormented the crew for many years. Just what that was I haven't been able to figure out, but something not entirely pleasant that sees the crew lose Serenity for a time, and they have to try and take her back again.)

I would like to see Jayne's back story be the most interesting and surprising. Something totally unexpected. I suggest he's been a merc for twenty years or so, but before that...?

If there was a royal or lordly family who were mostly massacred by fanatics 20 years ago.... One young [teenage] son manages to survive using his wits and cunning. Knows that if 'they' find him it'll mean death or worse. Changes his name, learns how to fight, invents a new person he can be. Acts mean, dumb and ornery to deflect further scrutiny. It's plausible.
