I consider Rappy to be a sad case of delusion. For whatever reason, he wants to think of himself as a nice guy, a good guy. But he can't, because he feels he's a greedy bastard. So he twists his brain into knots denying what he does and what it has turned him into.
The good part about him is, he still has a conscience. Look at his pure, raw anguish about the Deepwater oil spill. Deep down, he has loyalty to the people and the place of the Gulf. But that's what's killing his logic. He can't live honestly with himself, so he has to dream up distractions between one half of himself and the other. So he can keep denying what he does and what he means.
