US citizen arrested for carrying US flag at illegal alien rally:

Quote:

STATE OF TENNESSEE v. TEDDY RAY MITCHELL

The events giving rise to the Defendant’s arrest involve his attendance at an antiillegal
immigration rally held on June 24, 2006 on the grounds of the Hamblen County Courthouse. When the Defendant was confronted at the rally entrance by officers about his standard-size flag and flagpole, a verbal altercation and physical confrontation occurred between the Defendant and several officers that ultimately led to the Defendant’s arrest for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

When officers began to arrest the Defendant, Officer Wallen grabbed the flagpole to prevent the Defendant from striking anyone with it. He recalled that the Defendant complained about the unfairness that others could bring in Mexican flags but he was forbidden from bringing in an American flag.

Tom Lowe, a guest speaker at the rally, testified regarding what he described as the rather large presence of law enforcement. He was surprised to see officers dressed in riot gear and snipers on area roof tops. He opined that the large presence was an effort to “quieten [sic] us down.” Audrey Lowe testified that she witnessed one officer snap a flag stick while telling a lady that she could not carry it in on the stick.

However, the video recording of the incident belies the officers’ testimony in very
significant ways...

Conviction overturned on appeal, after videotape proved the copsters, prosecutors and trial judge were lying POS scumbags.

BONUS: A cop accidentally tasered another cop during this false arrest.

Still haven't seen any info or evidence that suggests these two were illegals.

I guess the prevailing "logic" here is that anyone who waves a Mexican flag in this country should automatically be deported. If so, I have to wonder if you'd be okay with other countries deporting anyone who waves an American flag, or arresting and imprisoning them for their "crime", or detaining them for "enhanced interrogation".

On the other hand, if it means we get to round up and deport all those fucking idiot pieces of shit waving their Confederate flags (a treasonous flag of a traitorous "nation" of abject losers), then that's a discussion we should probably have!

Does it matter ? They were protesting AZ's law, which is nothing more than a state's right to uphold its borders and maintain its sovereignty.

Mexico is a sovereign nation. Why wave the flag of another country if you're proud to be in THIS one? Certainly, not ALL illegals or all Latino illegals are from Mexico, are they ? So why just wave 1 flag ?

Does that seem right to you ?

The law they were protesting isn't even in effect yet, so they're basically protesting - America ? I don't get it. It was a stunt that was carried out , regardless of the facts, by haters of this country.

And you're supporting them ? That pretty much figures.

Are you willing to extend that ban on waving another country's flag to Saint Patrick's day parades and Columbus Day parades?

Would you extend that ban to Confederate flags? After all, why wave the flag of another nation if you're in THIS one, the one that WON that war after the Confederates abandoned the United States of America, turned traitor, and attacked the U.S.A.?

I support the right to protest unjust laws, and don't assume that those protesting must be here illegally. Of course, to YOU, that doesn't matter at all - if they're citizens, you could care less.

Try telling us all how much you love this country and its Constitution and laws, when you're so quick to toss all of them aside to chase after cheap, phony political points.

What mythical " ban " are you referring ? I never brought up that notion, you're raising a straw man argument here.

St Patrick's Day ? No one in Ireland is advocating taking over a part of the US. Lots of Irish DID come over, and did so legally. Why can't the Mexicans? ( and there's no famine going on now, either )

The Confederacy ? No such government exists, so what's your point ? Might as well raise up a flag of Gondor, for all I care. Your points are silly and vapid, as are you.

The AZ law is in no way "unjust". It follows US Federal law.

I never once indicated those protesting were illegals , so that makes twice in one thread you've ASSumed and twice you failed. Par for the course, by your standards.

This is all about two guys? Not very interesting, in that case--I thought it was abount a whole bunch of people...and how do we know they were illegals? Was that in the news report, 'cuz I don't seem to be able to find it there.

Isn't protest something America is proud of? Having our voices heard on things we disagree with--certainly the Tea Partiers are REAL big on it, so why is it a problem?

This flag thing is weird. I haven't read most of the posts, given the sources, but I get that waving a Mexican flag is a bad thing and must mean one hates America, yes?

That doesn't make sense to me, given how many on the right adore the confederate flag and have no problem with THAT being waved. Wouldn't that truly be a statement that you hate America, given the confederacy wanted to secede from it?

That makes more sense to me than waving a Mexican, or any other, flag.

I also wasn't aware that anyone from Mexico or who might wave a Mexican flag "is advocating taking over a part of the US", so I must have missed something there.

Seems to me if one thinks waving a Mexican flag is unamerican, then any flag BUT the U.S. flag is unamerican. I don't think a lot of people would agree with that. I certainly don't.

The Confederate battle flag was never the official CSA standard.

The red / white / red horizontal stripes is most often associated w/ the official CSA standard.

Ironically GA's current state flag more closely resembles the original CSA flag than the old 'battle flag' logo which is so often mistaken for the flag of the Confederacy.

Not real sure why the confederate battle flag is even an issue here, as it's not even remotely related, what so ever, to the story.

It's another straw man argument to suggest that " the Right " adores the confederate battle flag. The CSA no longer exists, and now such emblems represent something wholly different than seceding from the union. Waving a battle flag bears a completely different meaning.

Waving the flag of another country, while inside OUR borders, while protesting one of our state's attempt to defend its border sends a clear message...that of being anti-United States and " Pro " Mexican invasion into this country.

Pretending to NOT see that, and trying to pass it off as nothing but a harmless gesture is a feeble effort on your part, Niki.

Were this May 5th , and folks were celebrating a Mexican holiday, that'd be one thing. It ain't May 5th. Not in Mexico, not here, no anywhere.

Since its illegal to run onto the field, yes, they are illegals...regardless of their immigration status.

Especially if its painted on top of an orange stock car...

The Confederate flag's place is in historical and cultural context. Its perversion by the racists in this country is a shame, but one that precludes its use for any other purpose. For example, I don't think its appropriate to run onto a baseball field waving a Confederate flag. But it is ok to waive that flag or march with it during a Civil War reenactment.

Likewise the Mexican flag has its place. I see nothing wrong with displaying it, waving it, marching with it, etc, so long as there is no official recognition of the flag...so it should not be flown at a school or other govt event or institution.

Personally I think they'd make a better point if they picked a different flag to protest with...like the Scottish flag (the gold one with the Lion, not the blue one). Imagine 10,000 illegal Mexicans marching in LA and waving Scottish flags, I don't think anyone would know how to respond, especially if they could incorporate bagpipes and Mariachi music...haggis and guacamole...sombreros and kilts...

Actually, at the time, people were very afraid the Irish were trying to take over America. The British government was fairly oppressive towards the Irish in the north, where they had control, considering them "savages" almost on the order of how they considered native american tribes "savages." When they came here, the Irish encountered hatred, fear, and discrimination.

And it may not be a famine for the Mexicans, but it is a combination of economic woes and a shitty government that's making it kind of hard for any of them to afford food. Pesos are almost worthless, there's a lot of inflation.

The flag thing is probably a cultural pride thing, and not necessarily a slam against America or living in America or a show of disdain. Like, Italian-Americans are often still pretty proud of Italy, and are brought up eating and liking Italian food, and so many of them will display an Italian flag out of cultural pride. This is also true of Greek-Americans.
