The nation had just elected its first socialist president of the century, on the heels of out of control crony capitalism. Industry was collapsing, plants were closing and people losing jobs because loans and bonds were unable to make good. The banking gold reserves had gotten so bad that should anyone have gone to the bank to demand their money, they could be only be promised two cents on the dollar. The financial system was coming out of a fiasco from a mark to market margin based financial ponzi scheme with Goldman Sachs at the center of it. The Federal Reserve System looked something like this:
