And really, questioning Barack Obama's legitimacy is a fine thing to do, you have that right, and if there's any question of it, it would need to be done.

I myself am not convinced, to be honest, and just don't think proving or disproving his legitimacy is any help to the things I'm worried about, like mandates on health care, and invasion of privacy, and the "for your own good/the good of the public" thinking that dominates the government and lets monsters through the loopholes.

But you guys think this is a concern, it's not my place to cut you down or discourage you. Sorry if I've come across that way. Don't think I have any more to say on this, but I'll keep reading, it's interesting.

So Obama HAS made his COLB available, people have touched it, examined it, and found it to be valid.

This is where I must confess that I am not always the law abiding citizen that we are all told we should be.

Sometimes, I have a willingness to break the law. Not often, but it comes up.

And so I must confess with a heavy heart this truth...

I don't particularly care where my politicians were born. None of my support for, nor objection to, any presidential candidate has been based on their place of birth. There are actual real reasons to like or not like the leadership in this country that have nothing to do with birthplace.

It is these merits of actual conduct and design that demand the installation or removal of leaders. I consider the issue of birth to be a mere technicality, and in a proper governmental system, it wouldn't bloody matter where you were from. It would matter what you did.

But , this is a Constitutional requirement...
Admittedly , most folk have little or no familiarity with the Constitution . Even some of those who do have knowledge of it choose to ignore aspects of it that they don't agree with , as an example , a rogue cop who decides to administer his own corporeal 'justice' against the person that he feels is not moving quickly enough for his liking...Despite having sworn an oath to uphold , support , and defend the Constitution...

That's where folk become suspicious of a President who must meet Constitutional requirements and obligations , who promises 'transparency' , but can do no better than set up a website that characterizes the questioning of his credentials as an effort to 'fight the smears', and is willing to produce , at least initially , a *redacted* copy of a form that was issued , not in the 1960's , but decades later...

Meanwhile , in the public's effort to attain that touted transparency , it becomes common knowledge that Obama's application to the Illinois state bar says that he has never been known by any other name , which is , even by his own disclosure , demonstrably not true...

Just a couple days ago , I saw a newspaper editorial that said that the solution to this crisis is simple , " amend the Constitution ".

Shows no Constitutional knowledge at all , being that that would be an 'ex post facto' law...Which wouldn't apply to the Obama case , anyway...

The 'ex post facto' clause is a safeguard against people being ensnared , after the fact , by new legislation...

Necessarily , Constitutional amendments are not easy , and for good reason...

In the case of any doubt , it's much more productive , simpler , and safer , to *amend* the politicians...

Hello,

There is an upcoming opportunity for everyone to amend this particular politician, and I encourage them to do so if any aspect of his performance, conduct, or nature compells them to do so.

For my own part, I still don't care about his place of birth. There is a law in my hometown that says you can not have a car for sale in the swale area in front of your house.

For those who are not familiar with swale areas, I shall elucidate. There is a house. In front of the house is a front yard which is part of the same property. In front of the front yard is the sidewalk. Beyond the sidewalk is another piece of land which is officially designated public space, but which is maintained by the homeowner. This space is called the 'swale' in my hometown. Beyond this swale is the street.

Now, you can park your car in the swale if you prefer, and many do. But if you stick a 'For Sale' sign in the window, you are breaking the law. There are officers who go around citing people who do this, and they are justified in doing so because the law says they can. However, this law serves absolutely no useful public good. (At least to my eyes.) Even if I were a police officer, I do not anticipate that I would spend one iota of my time citing homeowners who put their own cars for sale in the swale area in front of their own houses.

By the same token, a Constitutional article to say, outlaw alcohol, or to prevent smoking in the privacy of your home, or to designate a black man as a mere percentage of a person... These are Constitutional articles I would similarly ignore. The reason for this is that they, too, serve no public good (At least to my eyes.) This is where I confess that I am not always a law abiding citizen. If I think I can get away with ignoring a law that I can't rationalize as being useful, I ignore it. In this aspect, I am something of a hypocrite. I would loudly proclaim my Constitutional right to bear arms or speak freely, for instance. Meanwhile I would look the other way as my neighbors enjoyed a bourbon during Constitutional prohibition.

Now, IF I cared about Obama's birth certificate, I'd have to note that he has produced a Hawaiian short form Birth document, and that a government official in Hawaii has certified that a long form document is retained on record. I don't know why portions of the short form document have been redacted. Perhaps it is a privacy issue. Obama might have been born a woman, and had a sex change. If I cared about where he was born, it would be enough that the government agencies and authorities pledged to confirm this have done so.

As noted above by other commentators, it is always hilarious to see people who argue:

A) that they do not have to provide government issued identification to an officer investigating a break-in

and

B) that a birth document and official confirmation of its authenticity is not enough to identify someone.

Clearly, I am not the only hypocrite in audience today.

It seems that the entire argument for people like PN and O2B hinges on the PERSONAL issue of it - they simply refuse to accept Obama's birth certificate as "real" because no one has come to them personally and shown it TO THEM. Similarly, moon-landing doubters can go their entire lives sticking to their claims that it's impossible to prove that man landed on the Moon, because THEY THEMSELVES weren't the ones who set foot on the Moon, and if they didn't do it, then no one else possibly could have.

Look at any conspiracy theory, and you see the same thread running through it - it's the purely subjective, personal non-acceptance of whatever is being discussed. "*I* haven't seen what's hidden away at Area 51, so that proves that it MUST be aliens from another galaxy!" "*I* couldn't have shot President Kennedy from a 2nd-floor window, so it's impossible that anyone else could have done so." "*I* wasn't present at the Nazi concentration camps, so the Holocaust never happened."

This is all just one step away from what I call subjective immortality - the notion that the universe started and ends with me. After all, *I* don't remember the Revolutionary War, so I guess it never happened, eh? All I really know of the world first-hand is what has happened to me since I was born, so the rest could all just be pure fabrication, a giant conspiracy that everyone else in the world is in on, in an attempt to try to pull the wool over my eyes.

But that's the way these guys operate. And that's why you'll never - NEVER - convince them of the facts, or get them to admit that they were wrong. Every piece of evidence you produce for them - "Just let us see the birth certificate, and this will all be over!" - will be denounced as a "forgery" or fabrication; every person or group who authenticates such documents and evidence will henceforth be viewed as being in on the scam and having been compromised by The Man.

I don't know about SignyM and Rue, but I think their argument isn't based on that they think Obama is infallible, but rather that they think the birth certificate thing has been proven enough. Although you all say there's bad blood between you, so I'm just going to try to stay out.

Anyway. There are shortcomings to democracy, I'll admit, because the rule of the majority is not necessarily a good thing. But to say that a Republic amends that? I'll have to disagree. I think a Republic puts the power into the hands of a select few that only say they're representing the greatest good, when really they're serving their own ends and twisted ideas of how to make the world better.

The biggest weapon in your "reasoned debate" armamentarium seems to be name-calling, and the second seems to be putting words in people's mouths. If you think "shouting down the small voices of dissent" means bringing up facts (Obama has a birth certificate from the state of Hawaii, there was a birth announcement on the newspaper at the time) and logic (This would place the beginning of your "conspiracy" all the way back to Obama's BIRTH. You're close to correct, Bytemite. I voted for Obama, volunteered for him, donated money to his campaign, and did so gladly, hoping he would live up to his campaign promises.

While I don't hate the man, I AM deeply disappointed with him on several key issues, because he ran on the left, and the day he took office, he steered sharply to the middle, where he's stayed ever since. I agree with everything you just said, and I ask, if you think our Republic has turned into an oligarchy, what do you think would stop a republic, newly rebuilt upon the ruins of this old one, from traveling down the same path?

This is what my problem is with a republic. I believe that the upwards concentration of power is inevitable, until finally you declare yourself an empire, and corruption lurks within every facet of your system.

So-called "birthers" — who claim Obama is ineligible to be president because, they argue, he was actually born outside the United States — have grown more vocal recently on blogs and television news shows.
Fukino issued a similar press release Oct. 31, but was prompted to speak out again because of the renewed attention on Obama's beginnings. Hawaii's Health Department has been flooded in recent weeks with questions from individuals and several national TV news networks asking for proof that Obama was indeed born in Hawaii.
"They just keep asking over and over and over again," Health Department spokeswoman Janice Okubo said.
The Constitution states that a person must be a "natural-born citizen" to be eligible for the presidency. Birthers contend that Obama's birth certificate is a fake, and many say he was actually born in Kenya, his father's homeland. They've challenged his citizenship in court.
One widely circulated YouTube clip of a town hall meeting showed a Republican congressman getting booed for saying Obama is a citizen. Talk show host Rush Limbaugh and CNN's Lou Dobbs have also raised the issue, and 10 Republican members of Congress co-sponsored a bill that would require future presidential candidates to provide a copy of their original birth certificate.
However, it appears Congress has moved on and has accepted Obama's island birthplace. The U.S. House on Monday unanimously approved a resolution recognizing and celebrating the 50th anniversary of Hawaii becoming the 50th state. A clause was included that reads: "Whereas the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961."
State law bars the release of a certified birth certificate to anyone who does not have a tangible interest.
However, Obama's birth certificate along with birth notices from the two Honolulu newspapers were brought forward even before he took office. But that's done nothing to shake the belief by many Obama critics that the president was born abroad.

So you're officially NOT in favor of the nation rallying behind the President? Just a quick bump in case Out2Lunch looks in over the weekend. It's been the better part of a week now, and he hasn't brought forth one shred of evidence that I - or ANYONE - has ever tried to have him banned from this site.

He did pop his pumpkin-sized head up in another thread on Wednesday, but when I brought up his lying and asked for his "proof", he ran away yet again.

Back to the topic at hand - the Obama birth certificate.

Head Birther Orly Taitz, internet dentist, has FOUND Obama's REAL birth certificate, from Kenya. Or Zanzibar. Or Australia. Or somewhere definitely NOT Hawaii or anywhere else in the U.S.

Too bad the one she tried to enter into evidence is a poorly-done forgery, though...

And according to the U.S. government, he has. It's interesting that someone who claims to be a lawyer (and on her website, she even claims to be certified to appear before the U.S. Supreme Court!) knows so little about the law. If you accuse somebody, you're supposed to prove them guilty; it's not on them to prove their innocence.

Of course, this is also the same woman who claimed on MSNBC that Obama isn't a citizen because both of his parents weren't citizens, which she says in a constitutional requirement for citizenship. Obviously, she's never read the "natural-born citizen" clause nor the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

Now, she DOES claim to be certified to appear before the Supreme Court of the United States, and on her website she even has a picture of her "certificate" which entitles her to do so. Only thing is, that certificate is a forgery. You know how I can tell? Because I haven't held it in my own hands! She refuses to come to my house and show it to me, and I've demanded repeatedly that she do so! What has she got to hide? WHAT IS SHE HIDING?!

He HAS popped his pumpkin-sized head up here and there, but when I brought up his lying and asked for his "proof", he ran away yet again.

At this point, I can only surmise that he has no such evidence (because I've never done what he claims), and is too much the coward to just step forward and admit that he was lying out of desperation and a desire to try to smear someone he couldn't win a rational debate with.

Oddly, one of the birfer arguments against Obama is that his mom was not old enough to confer citizenship to her son if he were born outside the U.S. That allegation is not supported by the poorly-made forgery posted on Taitz's website, since it lists her age as "18 years" - surely old enough to confer citizenship!

It's also kind of funny that this "birth certificate" provides exactly NONE of the information that birfers dismiss the ACTUAL birth certificate from Hawaii for not providing. And this one has the added advantage of being filled out three years AFTER Obama's birth, in a city that wasn't in Kenya then...

Look at all the pixelation around so much of the lettering. Looks to be not only a photochop job, but a really, really lousy one at that.

That's pretty typical of old , typewritten documents...Only it wasn't called pixellation back then...

A forensic document expert would note that what Mikey calls 'pixellation' is just a characteristic of individual typewriters...

That's how document experts could tell which machines were used for creating particular documents...The idiosyncrasies of various typewriters...
