Was Buffy that physically strong in the beginning?

In season seven, I feel that Buffy's true physicality was finally manifest. No other season showed he sheer strength IMO. How about when those steel pipes fell on her? Just bruises- that's near Spider-man level.

I've always been deeply troubled at the inconsistent manner in which super heroes seem to display their powers.
Hits which should do them in, sometimes are shaken off with out nary a scar. And other times, a few well placed but less powerful hits seem to knock them clean out.
What's up w/that ?
Makes it seem less real. I'm just sayin'.

That's why season 7 is my fave- I believe it was the most consistent in that way.
